The service one get depends on the people in the particualr loft. I have found it usefull to pick a loft and work with them for all one's needs.  You get to know them and they get to know you.  If you just want a "sail" for good price then Sailwarehouse is OK. I think their sails are made in Thailand so do not expect any special attention..

Main Message Board / Sail's what and where to buy

I have an UK asymmetrical spinnaker on my C34 MKII with an ATN sock to make the launch and retrieval easier when short-handed or in stronger winds.  The sock is a big advantage but does not mean there can be no mistakes.  We sail mostly in Monterey Bay CA, where it can blows hard in the summer time, and use this sail in winds up to 20Kts without much trouble <well mostly>. We find it to be a lot of fun and less trouble than a symmetrical spinnaker.  I would recommend this addition to anybody looking for some extra excitement.f

Main Message Board / Fresh Water Leak Into Bilge

I suggest you check all the fitting on the hot water heater.  They are all plastic on my boat and the heat casues them to crack and leak over time.  Does you pressure pump run frequently?  If it does, this would indicate that the leak is on the pressure side of the water system.r

Paul:

I just when through the process of replacing my shaft - not a lot of fun.  I made the decision to go with stainless steel because I did not want to have to revisit the prop shaft question ever again.  I have had very good luck with stainless shafts on other boats.i

Have you measured the AC current that you boat is drawing when at the dock?   It could be that the CB has just aged and opens after a load has been on for some time - slow get warm and trips. I

I have the same keel "smile" on my 97 as well.  It has been there since the boat was about1 year old and does not get any worse over time.  While you have to boat out, check the torque on all the keel bolts â€" should be 105 ft lbs.  If you find any loose, remove the nut and washer and put some 5200 under it to stop any tendency for water to leak into the bilge.

Yes, you do need a long socket for the torque wrench, The best way to make some is to have a shop weld two sockets together with a piece of tubing â€" all told about $30 worth.

Also replacing the Flyback charger is a very good idea.  Mine went bad during the last winter and managed to destroy a set of batteries in the process â€" an expensive failure.

Main Message Board / Max Prop etc
August 26, 2002, 10:47:02 PM
To close the story on this, Crew’s Nest now has a new Max Prop plus a stainless steel prop shaft.  I had to drop the rubber to get the new shaft in â€" major project to say the least.  Getting the old one out was easy - I cut it into two pieces.

For those who have not had their props off the shaft for some time, you might want to check for corrosion between the prop and the shaft.  Even with good zinc maintenance, I had enough to require a shaft replacement â€" could be the Santa Cruz water.

The different between the old and the new is greater than I ever expected â€" on the positive side.   First the new prop and shaft are balanced and the slight vibration that has been a puzzle for some time while motoring has completely gone.  I have worked on this vibration for some time â€" engine mounts, coupler alignment but none made any difference.  The speed V’s engine rev’s is also much improved over the standard issue 3 blade prop from Catalina.  The boat also goes backwards with some confidence â€" Max-Prop grabs the water the same it does going forward.

All in all  - expense but worth the dollars.

Main Message Board / 4 d battery
August 26, 2002, 10:59:24 PM
Like a number of things on Catalinas â€" no two boats are alike.  The battery that is permanent connected to the bilge pump is not the same on all boats â€" installer choice it would appear. As others have said on this forum, the key to battery life is charger management â€" a bad charger or a charger that is set to incorrect type of battery will eat batteries like candy. This is why it is critical to have batteries of the same type on a charger and batteries are of the same age â€" when one goes replace both.

A good amp meter placed in the ground circuits of each battery is the best way to understand what is going on with loads that one might not expect or should not be left on when you are leaving the boat.

Crew's Nest is back in the water and the bilge is completely dry.  This means that the idea of backing off the keel bolt nuts, putting a good supply of 5200 under the washers and then torque the nuts back to 105 ftlbs works â€" at least in my case.   I am also the proud owner of a modified socket that actually fit over the keel bolts.f

Main Message Board / Keel Bolt

I am in the process of going through the same process with these bolts - boat is on the hard in Santa Cruz as I type.  At Ron Hill's suggestion, I talked with the factory and they gave me the same advice - add 5200 under the washers and torque up the bolts.  We will see what happens.d

Ron:   Thank you for the advice - I will call Gerry on Monday.   As for checking the torque, I would say it has not been done since the boat was new.  For sure, I have not done it in the 3 years that I have own the boat.a
