Hey Steve, I had noticed your boat MIA at the marina then was in Seattle recently talking with Pete at Swiftsure when your name came up and he said you bought a cat. U keep it in Vancouver?

Stu,

Are you residing in Cowichan Bay or visiting? As for the exhaust elbow it looks to be in fine shape so not to worry. It is ss and clearly not original.
Will update tomorrow on the transmission rebuild which will test run tomorrow....fingers crossed. If this works out I'll recommend every one from Tacoma and on up to sail to Silva Bay for any non-DIY work!

Stu,
Based on your Reply #12 do I take it that my 1990 has the M35 engine? I believe the id plate says that but I left the boat on Gabriola Island on the weekend. Catalina Direct says the threading on the M35 may be a problem for the replacement exhaust elbow they have.

Thanks,
Tom

Thanks Mainesail. I had read your post on the 36 site about Foley Engines. I'm certainly not purchasing a ZF 10 from them. That's why I'm going to have the Gulf Island diesel fellow rebuild mine.
Thanks for all your great advice.
Tom

And thanks for the link Stu.

I know it's off topic from below but Stu or Ron  thinking to get them to fabricate a new ss exhaust elbow since they're working on the engine. Just preventative. Any thoughts?
Thanks

That's the one Stu. Link reminder noted.
I'm sailing in the Gulf Islands rather than north up the coast because of the tranny but flukes into meeting what appears to be a good mechanic pens the shipyard in Silva Bay, showed me one he's rebuilding. So I'm leaving the boat tomorrow and he will pull it and rebuild it, barring any bigger issue than clutches and thrust washers. All in $500 for rebuild including parts plus $750 to get it off and on. By comparison Foley Engines quoted US$2100 plus shipping and then CDN taxes which with exchange rates puts it at $3000 just for a new ZF 10. Which of course Mainsail says are now to be avoided. AND then got to get it off and on.
I know some guys would try doing it themselves but I'm better off working than spending 3 days or who knows.....
In Vancouver a rebuild kit alone is almost a grand.
So we're going to help keep the island economy running and hope it works.
Will keep you posted.

I'm looking at these issues and note that Maine Sail has posted on the Catalina 36/375 site on April 2, 2015 that he strongly recommends the more durable Techno-Drive TMC 40 over the ZF 10 (Hurth HBW 100). He talks about the thrust washers not being solid bronze any longer...worth a read. Direct replacement but apparently the trans output shaft is 3mm higher although Maine says not an issue once proper re-alignment is done. I'm still pouring over this myself. Any thoughts appreciated.

Dan,
This thread goes back a few years but I have unfortunately a similar noise at higher rpms. Did you ever hear what the problem was after they took out the transmission?

Many thanks.

Coincidentally just changed the primary and the Racor this weekend on my M35. Filled the filters with fuel and the Racor with the Power additive to clean injectors. 60 seconds with the fuel pump on using the ignition with slightly open bleed valve on the primary bracket on the engine. All well.

That's what I have also done with my jib halyard.....coiled at the mast and out of the way.

Hey Ron,

One would think that after all this time and a few thousand posts everything has been covered but each time I tune in something new pops up and I think Hmmm glad I read that...just in case. Invariably you provided some incite or suggestion that was bang on. In fact I just now got back from changing the HX zinc and the oil/filter....sure routine now, but it wasn't the first time. This forum and particularly your advice have made the attempts, and then successful completions, of more complex maintenance and repairs possible for those of us who push paper for a living.

Thanks Ron and please keep your dial set here to continue helping us all out of the quagmire we routinely get ourselves into!

I've used Signature Honey Teak from Tom in Florida. It is a two part and has some mixing involved,,,I have mal-mixed it once so rushing is to be avoided. You would have to sand to bare first but it comes up glossy and not that orangy colour. You have to watch it and typically apply the clear once a year. I've liked it.

Sailed on Mahina again, this time in the Coral sea with his new "quiet model". As he says, hate to hear the loud one. At night at sea everyone gets woken up by the head flush.....unless the weather drowned it out(:
Nice to have though, just not through the night.

I thought I had some refrig issues this summer up north. I had a commercial guy down to the boat and turns out it likely overheated. He did say that if it starts acting up there may be a leak of the old R12. He claimed to have source for R12 up here if the leak could be located and repaired. Fortunately I don't have that problem, at least not yet.

Ron,

You might well be right...anyways it's this off season's priority to sort out.

In the meantime my son and I are flying to Fiji next Tuesday to crew on Mahina across to Vanuatu for 12 days. Yippeee!
