Main Message Board / alternator
April 12, 2020, 01:09:12 PM
boat is for sale again.  only used it 5 times last year because of weather and family issues.  It needs a new loving home.  Anyway, moving it to the broker's yard yesterday the tach fell to 0 and it stopped charging.  Took the alternator apart, diode pack appears to test ok and brushes are good.  Anything else I can check before I get it bench tested tomorrow.  Numbers are too faded to read.  If it tests bad, what part number should I replace it with?  Prestolite 55 amp.  If it tests ok, where is the next place to look.  All the wires are in good shape and connections tight at the generator.  I have not checked behind the engine instruments yet.

Need to order a y valve so I can get my wash down system working again.  Anybody know what size the macerator thru hull is?  I think it is 1/2" NPT, but hate to order the wrong size.

Yes I know I am over market price.  This boat is loaded, clean and ready to sail.  Willing to negotiate the price.  Great boat, love it.  But been doing the Chesapeake for 20 years.  Ready to bare boat in the Med/Caribbean.  Hate having it sit unused.  This is the boat for you.

Recently purchased a new toy.  95 VW camper van.  Simple system, start battery and house battery.  House is charged by engine through a selenoid or via shore power.  Second day of our first road trip killed the house battery because the selenoid failed. Would like to add a circuit to show the house is getting charged.  Have a couple ideas.  Electrical Guru's what do you think?  One pic shows a warning light.  I think I will use a volt meter instead.  I only   want to show charging when the engine is running not house battery voltage.  Have a seperate system for that.

Main Message Board / fresh water pump
September 12, 2018, 06:47:04 AM
I was on the boat yesterday getting ready to be pulled for the approaching hurricane.  I noticed a leak from what looks like the pressure switch or perhaps the pump itself.  I tightend the screws, didn't help.  Didn't have time to investigate more.  Is there a gasket that maybe failed or should I be looking for a new pump.

It has been a great 17 run, but retirement brings other options.  Luna Loca 1990 MK 1.5 is on the market.  The Admiral and I want to bare boat in various location as we travel the next few years before investing in another boat sometime in the future.  Located on the Chesapeake.  Cori Williams is the broker at dycboat.com or 804 776 9888.  Should be on yachtworld.com in the next couple days.  Been a great part of the family, will miss her, but our usage over previous years is way down.  She needs a new loving home.  Stu, Ron, Lance, Michael, Jon and countless others I can't think of right now, it has been a pleasure knowing and working with you. Will try to stay active on the forum

Main Message Board / electronic repair
March 28, 2017, 03:17:19 PM
Not necessarily boat related.  I'm a tinkerer, a neighbor gave me a 5 year old LG flat screen that suddenly stopped working.  Another neighbor, who is much better at electronic repairs than I suggested it was probably just a bad capacitor.  Took the main board out and nothing looked a miss.  Turned to Google in search of a new board.  Instead I found this tip.  Many electronic boards/components fail because the heating/cooling cycles crack the solder joints. Most are microscopic, not visible to the eye. It was suggested that I put the board on a piece of cardboard and bake it in an electric oven at 385, which is slightly over the temp most solders flow.  In for 10 minutes, air cool.  When cool to the touch, reinstall.  Voila, it works again.  Tip might be useful for other electronics, as long as the board is removable from the case and any attached plastic fairings.

Main Message Board / rpm
September 25, 2016, 04:13:43 PM
This one has got be stumped.  Came to the boat yesterday, plug in shore power overnight.  Batteries full when we left the dock.  On the way to a 3 hour sail, max rpm is 2700 going out the channel, normal is 2900, so suspect some fouling.  Anchor out for lunch, 2 fridges running, navigation still on, ice maker running off the inverter for 2-3 hours.  Coming home motoring into the wind max we could get was 2500 rpm.  Alt belt is in good shape and proper tension.  Wires off the alternator are clean and tight. This is the second time in the last couple weeks this has happened.  Pretty sure it is an indicator problem, not mechanical, what am I missing, not sure where to look?  Alternator is the OEM 55 amp motorola, maybe it is giving me hints that it is dying

Main Message Board / smoke but no fire
April 25, 2016, 09:34:01 AM
Packing up the boat after a great weekend.  Started smelling smoke, electrical smoke. AC off, Batteries off, smoke continued.  took the Negative off the battery and the smoke started to diminish.  Opened the ports to let the smoke clear.  After some investigation, it is the wires to the LinkLite that are charred. It appeared to be working correctlyjust before the fire.  Haven't called Xantrex yet for troubleshooting info.  Can an internal failure in the LinkLite cause this or maybe just chaffed wires?

Main Message Board / Engine Water Heater Hoses
April 11, 2016, 04:11:16 PM
This references reply 11 of the K&N filter thread.  Stu can you link the picture to this thread?

Rick I like your set up for the water heater hose that goes to the water pump.  That hose tends to kink.  I made a 90 degree copper tube bend to avoid the kink, but your solution is more straight forward.

Just wanted to add a data point.  While I had the rudder out, I decided to change my original brass pins.  Ordered the kit from Edson, think it was $46 plus shipping.  Got the old pins home, cleaned them up and I can see where the pulley was rubbing, but there is almost no wear, not measureable with a micronmeter, but very slightly visibile when held against a straight edge.  Think they would have lasted another 26 years without a problem.

If you still have the brass pins, I would inspect before I ordered the replacement.  The pins are held in position so they don't rotate.  If you do have some slight wear, it would be easy to turn the pins 180 degrees and get many more years out of them.  Another thought, the cables don't have to be banjo string tight.  As long as all the the slack is out of them, there should be minimal play in the steering.

Main Message Board / Rudder Replacement MK 1.5
April 08, 2016, 02:32:27 PM
Spent the most of the week replacing the rudder on my Mk 1.5.  Probably one of the most difficult jobs I have done.  Difficult only because of the location.  It may have been easier if I removed the aft water tank, but I did not want to do that.  I followed the diagram in the wiki.  Steering cables loosened, quadrant through bolt removed.  Then went to work on the 4 bolts holding the quadrant halves together.  Upside down in the aft lazarette for almost 4 hours getting those bolts loose.  The factory did not use anti seize on them so the were severely corroded.  Finally got the rudder out and off to the machine shop.  Drilling the new holes was complicated by the fact that the factory did not drill the original holes square to the shaft.  They were slightly angled making drilling the new ones more difficult.  Finally got it back and after a half day rain delay installation was much easier than removal, except for aggravating the bruise on my chest from the first day was rather painless.

I decided to replace the rudder because I thought it was failing internally.  Under power, if I let go of the helm, the boat would immediately turn left.  What I found when I finally got it out was the shaft was severely corroded to about half the thickness of the metal where the lower bearing rode.  Inside rust was visible where the mild steel plate attached to the shaft, so I may have had some twisting of the rudder on the shaft.

If you have a MK1 or 1.5 it would be wise to drop your rudder the next time you are on the hard to inspect the shaft for corrosion.  I would put a scissors jack to support the rudder.  Only remove the top retaining bolt and lower the rudder enough to move the bearing out of the way to look at the shaft.  Should take less than 20 minutes to drop and reinstall.  You don't need to do anything with the quadrant to lower it enough to inspect.

Picture of the corroded shaft.

Main Message Board / Motor Mounts
March 27, 2016, 08:32:56 AM
Planning on replacing mine this week.  The K75's came with no instructions.  I'm guessing the wavy washer goes between the engine flange and the top nut, acting as a compressive lock washer.  If that is correct, any need to add a flat washer between the flange and the lower jam nut?

I am planning on using an automotive scissors jack under the transmission to hold the engine at the correct height, then replacing the rear mounts one at a time.  Then moving the jack to the front of the engine for the front mounts.  I'm hoping the jack will hold the engine in the correct alignment so that the exhaust, shaft and other bits and pieces won't need to be disconnected.  Do able?  I think I will need to remove the adjusting bolts from the rear mounts to get them out.  Possible or are they usually rusted together?

Main Message Board / Raw Water Punp
March 21, 2016, 12:41:19 PM
Pulled the pump when I winterized in the fall.  It was leaking badly.  It is the Sherwood that everyone hates.  I don't mind, pumps well, I can change impellers on a hot or cold engine in a matter of minutes and I have too many spare impellers to toss it or switch.  Upon dissassembly I found the water side seals shot, the inner bearing shot because of water intrusion and most of the water side circlips in bad shape.  The shaft, face plate and both sides of the case were in reusable condition.  I haven't got the bill yet, but Ken Kloeber was able to order all the internal bits to complete the rebuild.  It will be a substantial savings over a new pump or and probably less than the "major rebuild kit" offered by Depco.

I also got new K75 motor mounts from Ken.  Cheapest place I could find.

Had to remove the chart plotter to do some other projects.  Checking the plugs for corrosion I noticed one of the pins had broken off and came out with the plug.  The pin has something to do with the radar, rest of the plotter seems to work ok.  Anyone know if it the male multi pin plug can be replaced?  IIRC RM doesn't repair anymore.

Main Message Board / Air Conditioning Thermostat
May 26, 2015, 06:50:04 PM
My boat has a two unit AC system, the old unit has a capaliary tube analog thermostat.  It has bit the dust.  New one is $120, probably only have a couple years  of life left in the unit, would prefer to switch to a less expensive digital thermostat.  The unit is manufactured by Eastern Marine Corp, now Quorum Marine, sold under the Ocean Breeze name.  Anybody know how to change from the 7 wire analog to the 4 wire digital?  Because of liability issues the company won't help with the conversion.  He did say that Red was common, compressor was yellow, fan was green, heat is Brown.  Also have purple, Black and white wires to do something with.  Have a couple of pretty worthless wiring diagrams I can share.  Don't need the electric element heat function if it makes wiring any simplier.

Main Message Board / Squeal
May 06, 2015, 07:02:02 AM
The last couple times we have had the boat out I am getting a high pitched squeal from the prop shaft.  Bottom and shaft was just repainted, cutlass bearing was replaced last summer.  Shaft packing is Gore dirpless about 2 years old, no debris in packing gland, runs cool.  Squeal only occurs in the 1100=1800 rpm range, doesn't change pitch with rpms.  An old Tech Note says it is probably paint on the shaft rubbing on the cutlass bearing, will rub away eventually.  Anybody else have this happen?  Other thoughts?

Main Message Board / Canvas
February 13, 2015, 05:55:59 PM
Home for a couple days before we embark on the next trip.  Promised the Admiral she could visit warm places Jan-Mar.  Got the latest Mainsheet, Stu's article on his dodger got me thinking that I should share this.  I have a canvas guy I really trust.  Have been using him for probably the last 10 years.  His take on Sunbrella.  With annual cleaning and waterproofing most colors will last in the 8-10 year range.  As Stu said, lighter colors don't seem to do as well.  The color that seems to last the longest is Pacific Blue.  Seams/zippers may need to be repaired, but the fabric itself has a normal lifetime in the 12-15 year range.  My sail cover came with the boat, so it is at least 15 years old.  It's tired and needs to be replaced.  The next oldest is the bimini, replaced it in 2003, estimate on it is 3-4 more years.  Color is a very personal decision, I guess I got lucky.  The boat came with Pacific Blue canvas and we personnally like it.  Just something to think about if you are shopping for new canvas.

Main Message Board / Cutless Bearing
July 21, 2014, 06:59:19 PM
I noticed some movement last fall before we headed south.  2600 motoring miles later, cleaning the prop a couple weeks ago the movement was too much.  Vibration underway was also quite noticeable. Had the boat pulled for a short hall, changed the cutless in the slings.  What a difference :D The old bearing was rubber in a fiberglass shell.  The yard manager said he hasn't seen one of those in decades.  Can't complain, if OEM, it lasted  23+ years.  But happy it is changed.

The yard estimated 3 hours labor.  I got the tool from Flt 12 and had the job done in about 1+15.  It seems daunting, but is actually very straight forward.  Thank you for those that have documented the process.  You pictures and text was invaluable.

Main Message Board / Outboard Motors

Mine died a week ago.  '90 2 cycle nissan 5 hp.  Rebuilt the carb, that is usually the cause.  Nothing.  Had spark, fuel, but not running.  Called a few shops.  They suggested a bad head gasket, beyond my cruising cababilities.  Weathered in today, asking on the dock they recommened the outboard shop.  Hauled it up and asked them to trouble shoot.  They assumed that my carb rebuild was good and started looking other places.  Checked the spark...it was there...checked the compression...it was good.  Being raised on 2 cycle engines they tried a new spark plug.  Started on the second pull.  His explaination was sparking in open air is much different than when under compression.  Been playing with engines for several decades...never heard that before.  A spare plug is now on my shopping list.   $28 for parts and labor is so much better than $2300 for a new engine   and where would I put the engine hoist on my all ready crowded stern.

This has probably been written up before, but I don't recall reading it and I was on the hook with no internet so I could not do a search.  The starboard cabin lights suddenly quit.  I also noticed that the front running light wasn't working.  Unscrewed the beckson port and there was the problem.  Common ground wire had come apart at a crimp.  Glad I found that before I started tearing the vee berth apart.  I don't remember reading this before so sharing a bit a new (at least to me) knowledge.

Got the electrical part done, will mount the new Promariner 30 amp charger tomorrow.   8+ year old Xantrex Trucharge 20+ died.  Talked with Mainesail about which charger to buy.  In the discussion he mentioned that sometimes a current spike will fry the diodes in the charger.  That got me thinking.  Perhaps I killed the trucharge by starting the engine while the honda 2000 was charging the batteries.  Will never know for sure but from now on I'm going to make sure there is only one thing charging the batteries at a time.

Trying to decide if I can get into the Yacht Club in Key West.  They have some electrical wires across the channel that have an advertised clearance of 50'.  Standard rig, have a vhf whip antenna mounted on top.  Has anybody ever really measured it?  Can I sneak under?  Have about a 1.5' tide I can use if necessary.  The place in question is Garrison Bight Channel for those that have gone before.  Dockmaster say...s boats with 50' masts have no problem....but the YC cannot be held responsible.... you know the legal drill.

According to West Marine, Seward no longer makes the 6 gal water heater with the engine connections on the back.  The only brand they could find was a Kuuma.  Pretty much a slid in replacement, except the engine hose connections are a couple inches closer together and interfere with the water pump shelf.  I didn't bring that kind of saw with me on this trip, so I ended up loosing the shelf and trash can on the water heater door until I get home in the spring and can do some trimming.  Not a big deal, but thought I would mention it to help someone else in the future.

Mine broke on Monday.  We were stuck in St Augustine, FL until this morning.  Not a bad place to be stuck....but drained the cruising kitty a bunch.  We got a new stainless one from the factory.  Easy install.  Currently in Daytona Beach.  From a couple of the reply's I've gotten from the blog, it seems like  13-14 years is what you can expect from the original factory install.  If you are getting close in age it might be wise to just change it rather than have it break at an inopportune time.

I had hoped to install a Shureflow 3200 macerator, they are out of stock until sometime in November.  I guess I can pick one up on the way south, won't need until mid December or later.  Anybody have any experience with the West Marine brand, staying away from Jabsco.

Time to bite the bullet and add an inverter to the boat.  I'm guessing 1000w should do the trick.  Hair dryer or microwave (not at same time) would be the biggest loads.  Suggestions on brands, size, how to mount and wire, etc. are welcome.

I'll be bringing Luna Loca down the ICW, ultimate destination Key West, starting in November for the winter.  Anybody got a dock they are willing to loan me for a night or two along the way?

I'm going to be busy in October preparing the boat and plan on leaving early November down the ICW to winter over in the Fla Keys.  Not sure I can keep up with the Question of the Week.  If anyone would like to do it, please send me an email or PM and I can explain what I do.

Thanks,
Ken
