Main Message Board / Re: Steering access

We have a 2004 MKII. Going down below or getting out through the two small lazarettes for inspections and maintenance has been a real problem due to the sloping hull configuration in the stern. It can be pretty slippery at times and handholds are nonexistent.
We solved this problem by cutting out a small circular portion out of the two stern seats with a jigsaw and lightly beveled the cuts to match the rest of the seat configuration. Cut just enough to get a good handhold and keep within the the confines of the existing screw holes. I used a round Tupperware container for a pattern. This was done to the inner front corners of each seat looking forward. This now makes the stern pulpit tubing a great handhold.

Thanks Stu, I am OK now. I pulled out my welcome letter dated June 12, 2000 and the old user name and password worked!
Thanks again. I will also speak to Garhauer as to their suggestions.

I am considering installing this to the stern of our 2004 Mk II #1678. Any feedback would be appreciated. Are there installation positions that are better than others? I am thinking of putting it obviously on the port side but should the davit be mounted inside the stern pulpit or outside? I am thinking about possible interference with the shore power receptacle and where is the best place for mounting the base?

Thanks

Main Message Board / EXHAUST RISER ON 2004 MKII with M35B
November 07, 2007, 03:38:07 PM
We bought the boat brand new (#1678) in 2004 and since day one I have noticed that the riser could be moved slightly at right angles to the exhaust flange. ie moved slightly to port. I thought it may be the s/s clamp and replaced it along with a new gasket but it still has a slight amount of movement. Engine hours are 210. There is no black residue under the riser or on top of the HX indicating an exhaust blowby. There is no smell of exhaust in the engine compartment or aft cabin while underway. Is this just the nature of the beast? I am thinking of putting some Permatex Hi Temp Copper sealant which is made for exhaust manifolds.
Also, (a) I use a 50/50 engine coolant and was wondering how often this should be changed, (b) replacement interval for the impeller?
Thanks for your input.

Was your boat surveyed before purchase?
Did you go on a test sail?
Need a lot more specifics and info before we can assist you.
Thanks and welcome to the forum. No such thing as a stupid question as we are all learners here!

By the time you read this you will have the boat in the water or will not have the boat in the water. What does the manufacturer say on the can?
I use Petit Premium Line... wait 3 hours between coats and wait at least 4 hours before launching.
Good luck!

I purchased a copy from the local distributor and IMO it is geared to someone with a lot more mechanical aptitude than the normal boater. Not a lot of help.
Very amateurish printing quality as well. All it does is reinforce the fact that I should leave the heavy duty stuff to the experts.
We just came back from a two week cruise up to Princess Louisa Inlet and the Canadian gulf islands. Lots of motoring...I am now trying to locate a small coolant leak.
I am disturbed by the number of hoses that exhibit wear from vibration rubbing on the engine or engine compartment. Those with MkIIs take note.
As well the hot water line to the sink faucet blew off again (second time) and flooded the drawer underneath the sink...that crimped connection is a POS!!! First time it went was when the boat was 4 months old. I have put a SS hose clamp on...this should be SOP from the factory...like I need an Italian faucet!!!!!!! I do not trust Catalina's hot water system. We will boil water when needed.

Main Message Board / FUEL FILTER CROSS REFERENCE
July 09, 2007, 12:13:05 PM
Can someone confirm that a KRALINATOR F142 fuel filter is compatible with a Universal 35B. I have a 2004 MkII.
NAPA advises that a WIX 3390 is also compatible.
Is this correct?

Also, I have noticed a very slight buildup of a  white powdery material around the h/x endcaps and around the water pump. I have no leaks anywhere.
What is it and is it of any concern?

Also, I am going to spray paint the tranny coupling with a rust proof paint as there is a fine build up of rust in some areas. I have run with the PSS seal since we got the boat new in April 2004.

Thanks

Main Message Board / Re: STERN TIE UP LINE
July 05, 2007, 05:14:09 PM
Once we have anchored with the main hook, we take the stern line ashore with the dingy and attach the stern line to a rock, tree et cetera, to keep us from swinging in a crowded anchorage..

We are planning to spend a couple of weeks in Desolation Sound. Any suggestions as to how much yellow three braid poly we should carry..400..600'?
Should we go 5/16" or 3/8"? How are you attaching the spool to the stern of the boat?
Thanks.

This problem with leaking through the access port is not confined to the 34. A friend of ours has a 42 and had the same problem. He solved it by securing the port with quick cure 5200. In as much as I don't have an access port in the stern tank (or do I?), this is the route I will go.
I enjoy the time spent reading the forums for the 36 and 42 et cetera. Similar problems and then some!

We bought our 2004 C34 (1678) in April, 2004 in Vancouver. In my opinion, do not accept this boat as is. Do not pay for it. Hopefully you have just a deposit on it. The dealer or salesman will lie and be less than truthful. They want their cash and they will go to any length to complete the deal.  Assuming you have paid only a deposit, the problem right now is the dealers' and Catalina. DO NOT MAKE THIS YOUR PROBLEM.
These are not normal issues. Place colored tape on all stress cracks. Do not be forced to accept any verbal assurances or promises. If you are accepting this vessel, be very demanding that all irregularities are resolved to your satisfaction prior to balance of payment. How can this crap come out of the factory? I bet a Lexus would have been 25% of your boat? Do you think the Lexus dealer would deliver a car in this condition?
When was this boat ordered? Maybe request another one..with the Canadian dollar at an all time high, a newer boat might be a few bucks cheaper. The euphoria of new boat ownership quickly rubs off when you have major service issues. The dealer will only absorb so much of them and you!
Good luck mon ami!

I heard from a dealer recently that Frank Butler still has his letters "typed" on a typewriter.
We attended a Catalina Rendezvous recently and the dealer (dual Beneteau/Catalina) advised that their commissioning time on a Catalina was longer than on a similar sized Beneteau due to chronic production mistakes and workmanship. The water pressure system is a joke as well as cabinetry fittings.
I saw a 34 at the Seattle boat show and the stove was installed so incorrectly and so obviously out of alignment, I could not believe it passed inspection at the factory. No credit to ther dealer to have it shown like this as well.
In my opinion, they will be swallowed up in a few years by one one of the big players. Catalina is a "cottage" company and their customer service is a true indication of this level. The time has come for Butler to step down and for management to pull up their socks. If you can't run with the big dogs then stay on the porch!

2004 Mk II (1678)- seems like one of the crew used the head sink and did not turn off the faucet during a 4 hour motor trip yestreday. I only discovered this when we arrived at the home dock. I shut down the motor and heard the pump going. All the tanks were dry. Has there been any long term damage to the pump? Pump was warm to the touch. Guilty party swears it was on for only an hour!
If I get rid of this culprit it just leaves me and the two dogs.
