Main Message Board / LINKLITE "GOTCHA" SYNDROME
May 28, 2012, 11:39:19 AM
Stu, I appreciated the extensive comments covering the above condition. I will reset the default parameters on my recently installed Linklite asap. I have 4 Trojans total 450 amps, one deep cycle starting battery, magnum 2000 charger/inverter with magnum remote control.

I have noticed a recent condition whereby the monitor is flashing "synchronization". I do a manual synchro and the message disappears only to reappear a few minutes later. It seems this has started since I turned on both my Nova Kool fridge and my stand alone Nova Kool freezer while being plugged into shore power.

Can I safely assume this is due to the "gotcha" phenomenon and will disappear once I reset the 15V and 1% parameters?

Thanks

Main Message Board / CATALINA 355 PROS CONS ISSUES
August 10, 2011, 06:43:29 AM
Trust some 355 owners are on this site. We are considering a 355 as a replacement for our 2004 MKII which we sold last year.
The 355 has lots of sizzle and adressed many issues we found lacking but certainly correctable in the 34. We lament selling our 34 but as they said in the Godfather, we received an offer we couldn't refuse. In retrospect, it was a wise decision given todays used boat prices.

Tell me what you like, dislike and improvements made. Any warranty issues or gremlins?

Much appreciated.

A buddy is looking at used sailboats in the 32 to 34 range. There is a 2005 C34 with 15 hours on the market. The boat has not been used and I feel this is worse than being used too much. If it is not used then it is not well maintained. What problems can be lurking within the beast? I would want to see service records detailing oil changes, zinc replacements (HX and prop shaft) et cetera. Comments?

We have a 2004 #1678 with a M35B. We took out the boat yesterday for a couple of hours of motoring to calibrate new radar. On the way back I started to hear a very intermittent low volume buzzing sound from the alarm when at cruising speed, about 2600 rpm. The water temp and oil were fine. Engine ran great. Back at the dock I shut the motor down and got a good tone from the alarm before restarting and stopping. Seems everything is OK other than this new irritant. Has this happened to anyone else? Any suggestions?

Main Message Board / BENETEAU 34 VANCOUVER BOAT SHOW
February 07, 2009, 04:44:50 PM
This boat without a heater and dodger was on special for US$165,000. Add another 25% for Canadian funds and another 12% in taxes.  I saw this boat on February 4. Went back yesterday with the Admiral and one of the hinges for the cabinet door under the head sink was already broken. They are using bronze thru hulls rather than Marlon and when you lift the engine compartment cover, the first thing you have to hurdle to get at the engine is two batteries without any type of cover. I can just see dropping a wrench and watching the sparks fly. And a cast iron keel?
Style but no substance.
Like Charlie Chan said.."Your Beneteau like dead fish...cannot stand test of time!
The dealer is dual Beneteau and Catalina. The fact that no new Catalinas were in the show indicates they are more motivated to sell the Beneteaus.

Main Message Board / Edson Pedestal Brake Problem
November 14, 2008, 05:29:34 PM
Our boat is a 2004. While greasing the chain yesterday, I decided to check as to why our brake has never functioned well. Outside snap ring was in place, both hex screws were tight as were all screws in the housing and there was no grease on the brake material. With the knurled nob tightened, the wheel still turns easily. It seems as if the rod that goes through to the brake is about an 1/8" to short to fully push against the braking mechanism. If I place a screwdriver tip between the brake and the housing then it works fine when tightened.
Anybody with similar experiences. Your comments would be appreciated.

FOOD, A TOPIC CLOSE TO MY HEART!
Anyone want to share favorite breakfast, lunch or dinner suggestions?
We are heading up to Desolation Sound and the Broughtons for 6 weeks or more in late May. Buddy boat will be a Catalina 42. We will be doing galley duty every second day.
We hope to subsist on a diet of prawns, crab and salmon once we are there but are open to hot favorites.
Thanks

The threaded portion of this unit on which the wire is secured is spinning within the complete unit. Discovered this when I went to tighten it. Engine temp readings have been fine.
Is this normal or should the complete unit be replaced?

Main Message Board / WALMART MARINE PRODUCTS
April 07, 2008, 05:09:22 PM
FYI, our local Walmart carries the Starbrite Non Skid Deck Cleaner for $5.97, the Instant Hull Cleaner for $9.46, the Marine Polish for $8.97 and the Boat Wash for $3.97

The West Marine prices for the same products are $13.99, $19.99, $17.99 and $8.59 respectively!

In the fall, when they clear out their summer products, these items are in the $3 to $4 range.

Main Message Board / COOLANT LEAK ON UNIVERSAL M35B
March 29, 2008, 09:36:58 AM
Just a heads up for those with this or other models. We had a coolant leak coming from the head of the hose attached to the exhaust manifold. This hose ends at the heat exchanger. Hose part # is 015774 for those with a parts book.
We drained about a gallon of new coolant via the HX petcock.
Hose was removed by cutting partially in half and pulled off both ends. We discovered two casting irregularities on the manifold. Two sharp little "nipples", 180 degrees apart. Engine is 4 years old with approx 230 hours. Over a period of time these metal "spikes" wore into the hose. Tightening the clamp, hopefully to end the leak, just exacerbated the problem as this caused the metal to protrude even further into the hose and increase the leakage by puncturing the hose ever so slightly but completely.
We filed down both casting irregularities and took some emery cloth to the outlet.
A new hose and clamps are being installed. As we are planning an extended cruise to the Broughtons in 60 days, I am adding to my parts all hoses that are part of the cooling system. Unless it is a formed part and has to be purchased through a Universal dealer, I am purchasing the "over the counter" hoses and clamps through a local hose vendor. Not a marine chandlery. If you are planning any projects you can save a lot of money by buying stainless bolts and screws at any fastener shop. They have a much better selection at a much better price!

We have the above windlass on our 2004. I am about to service the windlass and have been reviewing the manual. One question I have. In the "operating the windlass section....lowering the anchor" it says to insert the lever into the clutch nut and check that the clutches are tightened down firmly. Does this mean that these clutches are always to have pressure on them or in other words, always be tightened?
I thought once the anchor is up and secured by a pin in the roller or a chain grabber in the locker, you could back off the clutches and relieve pressure on them.
In the section of "raising the anchor under power" it does not say anything about relieving the pressure once the anchor is up.
Appreciate your comments.

Main Message Board / 15 AMP SERVICE VERSUS 30
February 26, 2008, 04:44:19 AM
We have a Charles 30 amp charger on the boat. Present marina provides 30 amp service. We are looking to move to a much nicer facility but will have only a 15 amp service. What would be the drawbacks to this 15 amp service? Any comments would be appreciated.

I am looking to add a Fortress FX 16 as an additional backup to my 33 lb Bruce. The store above has an internet site at www.windlass-anchor.com.
The Fortress retails at $236 and this dealer is quoting $146 on their website plus $13 shipping.
Has anyone heard anything negative or positive on this dealer. Any responses would be appreciated.
What experiences have you had using this anchor?

Main Message Board / WARRANTY ISSUES ON MKII
January 28, 2008, 02:43:54 PM
I was reviewing the BUY and SELL area and came across the topic "2005 34 Catalina MkII for sale". The owner had included info under warranty repairs and maintenance. I suggest all you owners, especially the newer MKII, review these topics. Deck void issues on this model are becoming quite common. Also, check all your engine hoses for possible rubbing issues. My opinion is this selling dealer did a piss poor job of commissioning! Will it take a fatality before the factory and dealer network smarten up? Anybody want to share their new boat warranty issues? Might give us all a heads up on possible areas to watch.
Safe boating!

I have just installed a Link 10 and now wish to get this Honda generator. I am running the original two 4Ds which are wired in parallel as house batteries. I assume my amp hours are 400. I have another Trojan 27 as a starting battery which I have installed under the head sink.

Where is the best place to get one at the best price?

Main Message Board / ACCESS PORT FOR H/X ZINC FOR MK II
January 07, 2008, 07:10:27 PM
I installed a black 8" ABS/plastic port to make this job more user friendly. Port was placed 5" from the bottom of the side panel and right in the middle.
You have to take the rear engine cover off and taking off the raw water valve access door helps. I scribed a circle off a 8.5 inch plate, then drilled four 1/2" holes at the four compass points and then ran my jigsaw north and south. Each quarter cut easily and no blades whewre broken. Use a real flat port as there are space considearations. The port should not be more than 1/2" in width. I rolled back the insulation barrier to cut the hole and then cut a vertical and horizontal slit in the barrier. This preserves it. Just push it in when acessing the zinc or end cap. When installing the barrier back on do not tighten the screws very much as they will penetrate through the panel and destroy your teak look! Total cost $15.

FYI my problem stemmed from the fact that the flange which screws into the s/s riser was not fully set. A short stint in a vise fixed this. It will now stand up to the most active pole dancer. It also gave me the oportunity to examine the hoses/clamps, riser and welds in detail. All in great shape after 4 salty years. New exhaust gasket ($1.75) and clamp ($25) were also installed.

I also changed engine coolant as the original coolant was showing some discoloration. In addition, the cooling system was pressurerized to 15PSI for 15 minutes and held steady.

Oil & oil filter and fuel filter were changed. I change oil twice a year. Racor (10 micron) was changed in May. This is my third Racor since commissioning in April of 2004. Never had a sign of dirt in the bowl. Unless we are cruising, I fill a 5 gallon jerry can with diesel and leave it for a few days before pouring into the tank. I think this cuts down on any sediment that might be present.

Tranny oil was changed. I installed a new impeller as well, this is my third as well. One blade had a bend to it. Rather than just checking them, I feel if youv'e gone this far, why not put a brand new one in as they are only $46.

I painted the entire area aft of the tranny with a white enamel and painted the tranny coupling with silver Tremclad to prevent rust. PSS dripless seal inspected as well. Any body interested in buying a brand new stuffing box, never used!

Main Message Board / GARHAUER LD6-1 LIFTING DAVIT
December 13, 2007, 04:08:48 PM
I am considering installing this to the stern of our 2004 Mk II #1678. Any feedback would be appreciated. Are there installation positions that are better than others? I am thinking of putting it obviously on the port side but should the davit be mounted inside the stern pulpit or outside? I am thinking about possible interference with the shore power receptacle and where is the best place for mounting the base?

Thanks

Main Message Board / EXHAUST RISER ON 2004 MKII with M35B
November 07, 2007, 03:38:07 PM
We bought the boat brand new (#1678) in 2004 and since day one I have noticed that the riser could be moved slightly at right angles to the exhaust flange. ie moved slightly to port. I thought it may be the s/s clamp and replaced it along with a new gasket but it still has a slight amount of movement. Engine hours are 210. There is no black residue under the riser or on top of the HX indicating an exhaust blowby. There is no smell of exhaust in the engine compartment or aft cabin while underway. Is this just the nature of the beast? I am thinking of putting some Permatex Hi Temp Copper sealant which is made for exhaust manifolds.
Also, (a) I use a 50/50 engine coolant and was wondering how often this should be changed, (b) replacement interval for the impeller?
Thanks for your input.

Main Message Board / FUEL FILTER CROSS REFERENCE
July 09, 2007, 12:13:05 PM
Can someone confirm that a KRALINATOR F142 fuel filter is compatible with a Universal 35B. I have a 2004 MkII.
NAPA advises that a WIX 3390 is also compatible.
Is this correct?

Also, I have noticed a very slight buildup of a  white powdery material around the h/x endcaps and around the water pump. I have no leaks anywhere.
What is it and is it of any concern?

Also, I am going to spray paint the tranny coupling with a rust proof paint as there is a fine build up of rust in some areas. I have run with the PSS seal since we got the boat new in April 2004.

Thanks

Main Message Board / WATER PRESSURE PUMP
May 19, 2007, 05:25:03 PM
2004 Mk II (1678)- seems like one of the crew used the head sink and did not turn off the faucet during a 4 hour motor trip yestreday. I only discovered this when we arrived at the home dock. I shut down the motor and heard the pump going. All the tanks were dry. Has there been any long term damage to the pump? Pump was warm to the touch. Guilty party swears it was on for only an hour!
If I get rid of this culprit it just leaves me and the two dogs.

Main Message Board / hx zinc acces on Mark II boats
October 09, 2006, 04:30:17 PM
2004 C34 MK2 hull 1678
We have a very annoying problem and would apprecate any feedback. The Admiral and I are in Point Roberts Marina, Washington (Pacific North West) - a "hot" marina.
We purchased the boat new and have been in the same slip with the samer neighbours since May 2004. We assume our galvanic isolator is working and we just replaced the two prop shaft zincs on Sept 3, 2006. (I have found that these need to be replaced every 6 months.) We run our fridge year round because it is also our floating cottage. I am checking the HX zinc monthly and in the last 6 months I am finding that upon removal, the zinc anode has disinegrated around the thread area at the top of the 9/16" nut. When I remove the nut, the inside of the nut has the remains of the threaded portion and the pencil portion remains in the HX. This happened today when I checked the zinc which I installed on August 30, 2006. I use the OEM pencil anode. The new anode would not screw in properly so I removed the end cap. I found the remains of 3 of the anodes. All were in good condition but all had suffered the same malady.Separation at the thread portion.
I called Gallery Marine but they could not determine the cause other than the level of the water in the HX might happen to drop down to the same height as the nut/zinc when the boat is tied up. The intake valve is closed while at the dock. Any ideas or suggestions as to why is this is happening?

In order to check the #$% zinc we have to clear out the aft cabin including the mattresses. This does not make the Admiral happy. To alleviate this annoying task I plan on instaling an access door in the rear engine compartment. Why Catalina did not do this is a mystery. They have a door to access the fuel filter but we are spending a lot more time in the zinc/end cap area. It looks like I will use the intake valve access door and replace it with a West Marine product. I called Catalina today and was quoted $400 for a Catalina part!! I thought Harley Davidson was bad!
Has anyone done ant modifications to make this zinx inspection task easier?
