This could be as simple as a ground to your prop shaft making noise.  When the shaft turns it rubs, when it's locked it doesn't.  I had a shaft brush grounding strap that pressed against my prop shaft in my old C34.  Not sure if it was effective -- it was there when I purchased the boat.

Wind Dancer has been sold.  The new owners will be living aboard at Shilshole, and are renaming her Cocodrilo, so say hi if you seen them around. We're staying in the Catalina family, though.  We bought a 1996 Catalina 380, and are naming her Aquila.

Cheers,

Jay

Pending sale. . .

We are hauling the boat this weekend to bottom paint and replace zincs.  Good response so far, but she's still available.  She's the only MK I on the market up in Seattle right now and only one of two in Washington State and she's priced right.  If you know of anyone looking for a great first (or second) boat, send 'em my way.

We've finally decided to put our beloved 1988 C34 on the market here in Seattle.  She is a standard rig, fin keel model, and has many upgrades, including Balmar alternator, Trojan Batteries, refrigeration, stern pulpit seats and more.  I'm hoping to sell her without a broker, so will offer her at $39,900 as is.  We just got back from a trip to the San Juans and sail her regularly.  She's been a fantastic boat and we'll be sad to see her go.

Please contact me at jay(dot)guard(at)gmail.com for more information.

I went with 3/8"/10mm and have been happy with it.

Hi Bob,

The annual licensing fee varies by county, but I would expect it to run much less than $380 per year.  There are no additional state fees.

Cheers,

Also check the wiring for loose grounds, especially the engine panel wiring in the cockpit.

I have a Rule 2000, the factory installed Whale manual pump, a small 500 diaphragm pump for my shower, a portable manual pump, and a bucket or two lying around.  Not to mention the ability to remove the hose from the engine seawater intake (not sure what that's rated, but you can be sure if my pumps aren't keeping up I'll give that a shot).  I think I'm covered, though I've considered adding a smaller pump in the bilge as a primary that will activate at a lower water level than the large one, but haven't gotten around to it.

Or, you could just wrap your wheel with a bit of line.  It's provides a good grip and excellent insulation. . . and is a lot cheaper.

That looks nice, Brent, thanks for the picture.  I now have another spring project to do.

I've not heard of Marelon thru-hulls failing like that.  They are supposedly stronger and less brittle than standard plastic.

Neutral or Reverse, never Forward.  I leave mine in Neutral, so the shaft free-spins while sailing.

I'm not sure this guy was anywhere near his boat -- if so, he should have removed his canvas and sails.  I agree about the bridle and add that he should've had a second anchor out too.

Hey Wind Dancer,
There is a boat in the slip next to mine has everything you're looking for.
It's a Cheoy Lee 53, listed at 384,000.

Ralph

Haha, very funny. :-)  If I was looking for a live-aboard I'd take a Catalina 400 or 445 over that any day, for less money.

Seriously though, the C355 looks great to me.  A little short inside, but I could make do. ;-)

"there is more difference in LOA"

Are you sure about that?:  Catalina 34 LOA: 35' 8".  Catalina 36 LOA: 36' 4". My math says 8 inches...

Tony

Yes, positive.  C36 LOA is 37'9".  LOD is 36'4".  The old brochures listed it incorrectly.  Check out the 2004 brochure here: http://www.c36ia.com/files/C36%202004%20Brochure.pdf.
