Main Message Board / Cetol remover

Time to sand or otherwise remove the cetol on the exterior wood.
Is there a good way to avoid sanding by using a remover and if so, whats a good brand?

Main Message Board / Fuel filter and racor filter
May 02, 2018, 05:26:50 AM
After those filters are changed out (I have never done it in the past but I would like to do so this year) is there some bleeding of the system that has to be done before I start the engine. Just curious about the protocol. Is it just like the oil filter; where after the change out, you just run the engine?

Do we have zincs that need to be replaced in our hot water heaters. I have a 1990 34 Tall rig. I replaced it once with the same hot water heater that the boat came with, a believe a Seaward.

Main Message Board / Rigging replacement
January 02, 2018, 07:27:15 AM
Boat is 1990 tall rig kept in LI Sound for its entire life. Lightly used. The standing rigging looks good, so far as I can see it but should it be replaced for age reasons alone? And if so, what vendors are recommended?

My plastic slider door finally broke where the handle is. How the heck does one remove it and any ideas for replacement with something nicer?

Built in battery charger and monitor
I started out looking for a battery monitor for my AGM starting battery and two house batteries.
I saw at West Marine a built in battery charger for three batteries, with automatic reconditioning and a monitor  feature . I never thought much about this approach since I am on a hook  but of course it may be useful when I am on the hard six months out of the year since I do have access to AC power
Has anyone tried this approach?

Main Message Board / Tach testing
September 01, 2016, 12:22:01 PM
I finally got back to testing my old tach. I did not bother for a while, since I bought a new one anyway
I used the ohm meter with the positive on the send post. Sure enough the needle went up a little ways. Somebody told me in the past but what is the significance of that if any? Thank you very much

Main Message Board / stern water tank cleaning
October 22, 2015, 11:00:45 AM
I cleaned the center tank nicely by opening the  port and directly putting in a good spray hose and I used a separate pump to pump it out quickly and easily rather than old fashioned drainage.
but as to the stern tank, it there  an easy way to access and drain???

Main Message Board / Brown yuk; Rebedding stays?
June 10, 2015, 12:07:22 PM
Found source of brown yuk in locker just rear of the forward bulkhead. Its coming off the big screws that hold the stays in place on the inside of the liner. 2 of them have the stuff on them. I cleaned them up but whats the long term solution? Can they be re bedded while the mast is up; doing one at a time? How does one reach the bolt on the inside of the liner? I don't recall seeing any post on this. Use 3M 4000 or 5200?
Any ideas much appreciated

I know there have been posts on this
My question is does anyone have any photos on how to get to it
If the board is removed in the rear birth, can it removed? Is there enough height in our boats or does a hole have to be drilled in the locker above it?
Thank you

Main Message Board / Bottom scraping
December 18, 2014, 08:25:01 AM
My hull is not bad but has some bare spots and some places with lawyers of paint and others with perhaps just one layer. But it is flaking in many areas where it is layered
I would not mind taking all the loose stuff, doing a new barrier coat and new paint job
There is bicarb stripping, sanding etc
Whats the best approach, least work etc??
Thanks

Main Message Board / Great debate: Oberdorfer vs. Sherwood
September 05, 2014, 06:39:21 AM
So my boat started her life with the Oberdorfer
Replaced it with Sherwood that cooled well but was hard to access
Went with new Oberdorfer and in a strong headwind, against the tide on a hot day, engine gets up to 185-190. Makes me nervous
Thinking of going back to Sherwood
Any new views on this?

I want to install larger cables, to enable the engine to turn over better
I know some people have done this from a prior post

What is the best way to fish them through

Main Message Board / Starter motor

My motor was always slow to turn over. May be a wire or the starter motor. How much of a deal to replace the starter motor. Its 23-24 years old. Engine has less than 800 hours on this 1990 boat

Main Message Board / Amps to head
May 29, 2013, 03:09:01 PM
I'm hardwiring my old Wilcox Crittendon head to the house battery bank.
I noticed that the emergency battery that it previously used was 2 1/2 amps
Can I wire it to the house battery bank which is 2 12 V batteries wired as 1 12Volt?
What size fuse should I use?
I looked at the motor on the old head and there is no label on it as to amps

Main Message Board / Electric panel
April 29, 2013, 11:43:33 AM
A few items do not work. So I removed the panal. The fuses look ok, where their are fuses.
I suppose the problem is not breakers, since other connectons are fine.
I checked in the back of the panal with a tester and as I said, some connections had power and others do not.
I sprayed some wd40 on a few of the connections. I read the 12 volt Bible.
Any other suggestions?

Any idea what the white wire is for on the port side of the engine
On a different, note, I get no electric at the base of the mast for the steaming light and deck light. Is there a common fuse for them behind the electrical panal? I could not find it.

Main Message Board / weeping rudder
March 03, 2012, 05:31:50 PM
Old topic. I finally decided to do something about the half dollar size rust spot on the rudder. The fellow I am working with on the project wants to grind down the spot, drain the water, and refiberglass the area. Can someone please send me the photos of what the rudder looks like on the inside; how it is constructed? I have a 1990 boat, #1022. Thanks very much
#95
Sorry to sicken everyone with this topic. Installed the new Oberdorfer in nice 25 degree weather. I used straight thread to barb nipples rather than the 90 degree to enhance water flow. This meant slightly longer hoses. A salesperson suggested this.  I then talked with a senior at the US Merchant Marine Academy who told me it was better to shorten the hoses and use the 90 degree elbow nipples leading the hoses straight back. Soooo, who is right or does it matter at all?
#96
So I have posted photos finally:
1. I rec'd the Oberdorfer 3/8 inch raw water pump. When I took the elbows off the Sherwood they would not fit the Oberdorfer since they were 1/2 inch threads. That worries me since I am concerned that more water was capable of flowing thru the Sherwood than the Oberdorfer and that might affect cooling. Should the Sherwood elbows have fit the Oberdorfer? I also notice that the impeller on the Oberdorfer is smaller than on the Sherwood.
2. Bottom paint peel is shown. Does not look like blisters but question is how to deal with other than to soda blast the entire bottom.
3. One spot of rudder weep. Do nothing? Drill and fill that one spot? Remove and redo the entire rudder justified?
Thanks for any suggestions, particularly on the pump issue.

Main Message Board / nonmatching holes on new Oberdorfer
December 17, 2011, 02:04:40 PM
Sorry to be such a bother but took off the old Sherwood (which replaced the original Oberdorfer) and guess what...the holes do not line up. Yupper, moved the pump to check all 4 positions. By the way, what is the piece that comes off the engine in the upper left quadrant? The hose inlet and outflow properly face down and to the left and the plate lines up fine but not the holes!! is this typical on a pump made 21 years later?

Main Message Board / new impeller pump

the new Oberdorfer has arrived. A very simple question: whats the best way to remove the old hoses and reconnect?

The bottom paint on my 1990 boat peels down to the white "base". Paint does not adhere and when the boat is pulled in the fall, those white areas where the layers of  point has peeled off are evident. Am I due to take all the paint off and treat the bottom somehow?
Secondly and perhaps worse, the rudder has a small rust spot which is also wet. I am afraid water is getting into the rudder and wonder what the proper fix is? Thanks
