Main Message Board / Speed on different tacks
August 07, 2019, 12:30:36 PM
Boat is a 2004 Tall Rig

This continues to bother me. Rig is set every spring, halyard and eye are used to make certain that mast is straight. Loos Gauge is used to make certain that tensions are correct, and is done again once or twice in the season to check for any change.

We have done everything we can think of to answer our question but have never corrected our issue. The boat, based on ST60 boat speed, loves port tack much more than starboard. Given, using GPS, it is closer than ST60, but still different. With consistent wind it can be .5 to 1 knot slower by reading on a starboard tack.

Initially I thought the issue was rig set up. After a couple of years, and having others check the rig, we have not been able to answer the WHY. As GPS puts us closer in speed, I thought that it must be that as the thru hull for the speedo is on port side of centerline near bow, that the water pressure would be different on each tack so info would be different.

The question: Does anyone else have this quandary or have opinions on the issue?

Main Message Board / Re-bedding hatches
April 05, 2016, 11:41:54 AM
Both deck hatches have small leaks. Assuming from bedding age. The boat is a 2004.

I have taken off the inside trim to see how the hatches are attached, and was somewhat surprised. I assumed (there I go again making assumptions) that they were through bolted in place when they are just screwed into the deck. Don't want to assume again that this is fairly straight forward project so am asking the board for any details if you have done this project.
I have a couple of roles of MaineSails bedding material that I bought in anticipation of this project.

Questions: What did you use to clean the deck and hatch of old material?
Is the bedding material that Mainesail recommends for rebedding  stanchions the right product?
Coolest temperature recommended for this project. Want to complete before splash but snowing out.
Any helpful hints to do this project correctly the FIRST time?

Thanks for any helpful hints.

Main Message Board / Deck fill O-ring
May 20, 2014, 11:24:27 AM

I have searched and not found a likely hit. Looking for the O-Ring for the stainless deck fill for the forward water tank.Actually, on the 2004 cC-34 all the deck fills are the same. Just need the O-Ring , and the only rings I am finding are two thick.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

I have a 2004 C34 that has not been changed Electrically since leaving the factory. The boat was just surveyed, and the surveyor noted that the "120VAC system and all equipment should be grounded to main 12VDC negative bus or engine block. ABYC E-11"

The 120V bus and 12V bus are adjacent to one another, which would make it a pretty simple fix if this were a good idea, but I have no clue. Good idea? Something that should be done? Suggestions? I am fine with a simple fix if it is the right thing to do.

Main Message Board / Bittersweet Day
July 09, 2012, 06:09:28 PM

Today, one of the first good wind days in a week, I sat in the salon of Splash Dance and signed the listing papers for the boat. I have absolutely loved owning her, and might for some time to come unless the right buyer comes along. Time is my issue, and you would think in retirement it should not be. However, I seem to sail less and feel bad that the boat sits in her slip. Living on a inland lake with other water toys, and having a passion for golf as well, does not help the sailing time.

I am not leaving sailing as I will continue to sail on other peoples boats and charter a few weeks a year as well. I may even sail more!

If you know someone looking for a sweet boat, Splash Dance is a 2004, Hull #1679,  fresh water C34 MKII, is now listed with Bill @harborviewyachytsales.com. I can only hope that she ends up with people that will take good care of her.

Main Message Board / Seaward stove knobs
July 11, 2011, 07:42:21 AM

Tried a search and did not find. Does anyone know the easiest source for knobs on a Seaward stove? I have one that is cracked. I could call Seaward direct, but if there is a easier or quicker way, I am looking for it.

Thanks,
Tom

Main Message Board / Tachometer
August 09, 2010, 11:40:56 AM

I did a search and did not find this problem.

I own a 2004 C34. I am operating on my second tach after replacing the first 2 years ago.

The tach works fine just after the engine is started. It works for 15-45 seconds , spikes, and stops.

Any thoughts?

Main Message Board / Boat Line Up at Catalina
July 28, 2010, 02:08:48 PM

On one of the other boards I frequent the word is that Catalina is now discontinuing the 320 and the 350. Apparently a couple of dealers have also said that they cannot be ordered any longer. I know that both boats are still on the Catalina website, but so were the 34 and 36 when they were being phased out.

That leaves a pretty big hole between the 309 and 375. Any rumors on what will fill the space if this true?

Main Message Board / Companionway hatch tape
July 21, 2009, 07:43:38 PM

I have the replacement tape for the companionway hatch to slide on. My old tape began to peel, and although it still works fine it is looking a little tacky.

So, has anyone done this little project? I did a search and did not find it. Could very well be my search abilities.

The question that I have is how did you prep for the tape? Remove all the old tape and glue? With what did you remove the glue? Any secrets to this project?

Thanks,

Tom

Main Message Board / Mounting artwork, etc
June 22, 2009, 08:36:14 PM
I know that i have seen good examples of this, but search does not get it done. I want to mount a emergency list and a couple of pictures on bulkheads. One on the bulkhead by the nav station and a couple on bulkheads between salon and vberth. Don't want to drill thru to mount, so what are my options?

1. Want to use frames so it looks finished.
2. Will make sure the glass is plexi
3. Don't want them coming down in heavy weather.

Options?

C34MKII, 2004

Checked the boat in preparation for splash in a couple of weeks. When put away for the winter engine systems were all in great shape, oil and transmission fluids all fresh, etc. Coolant was at proper level after checking both engine and overflow tank.

When checking levels this week I find the overflow tank empty which surprised me. More surprising was when I pulled the radiator cap off and had pressure in a cold cooling system. Enough that coolant would come out if I did not replace the radiator cap.

Thoughts??

Main Message Board / Garhauer Bow Roller Assembly
April 16, 2008, 06:21:59 AM
Good Morning,

Tried a search and could not find anything on this one.

A friend, and still one regardless, got caught in a crosswind last fall and drifted down on a solid pier with the bow roller assembly taking the hit. I have the new assembly from Garhauer, and now need to replace it. Did a little yesterday, and removed the five bolts. That was not much problem. However, now the fun begins.

Has anyone else replaced this assembly? What is it bedded in? What was successful for you in getting it off? Anything to be aware of as I tackle this?

Thanks in advance.

Main Message Board / Tachometer Issue
September 04, 2007, 05:19:43 PM

I searched for this and did not find anything like it. So........

2004, C34, M35

About 2 months ago my tach was acting up. Registering much higher than I knew it to be, especially at idle. Then, it corrected itself. Idle was consistent, and tach registered where it always had at certain speeds and weather conditions. Breathed that sigh of relief you know you will pay for later, and everything was fine.

Until this weekend. Start the engine and at what I know is 800-1000 RPM idle it reads 3000 RPM. Hit the throttle a little and it pegs. Three days out, same thing.

OK, any simple ideas? I am having the engine tuned in a few weeks as I am just not happy with how it idles. Starts and runs fine, but even after checking alignment it just does not make me happy. I will have them look at the tach, but would rather correct it before a two weeks cruise if I can.

Any and all ideas accepted.

Main Message Board / Mast Access Plate
May 01, 2007, 05:41:07 AM

This kind of ties to my ST 60 problem. Has anyone cut an access into the bottom of their mast to make electrical access possible. I know that some of the old Islanders had one cut in them. Just wondered if any of you have done anything and how you went about it.

Main Message Board / ST 60 Wind Instrument
April 30, 2007, 06:03:02 PM
ST 60 Wind Instrument

Splashed the boat today and stepped the mast. Checked all wiring, bulbs, etc. and everything seemed fine. Except when I later checked instruments and the ST 60 Wind shows no direction or windspeed although it is blowing and pointing. Flashed 0 and then a dotted line. It would seem that as the connections are ground and five other wires for different readouts that I would get something such as a direction or speed. Nothing.

Had taken the pod apart to take out my Auto Pilot to have it checked by Raymarine. Thought I had everything back together, but pulled it again to make sure. Everything looks fine there. There is only one way to connect the windex at the top of the mast, think it was fine, but will probably have to go up and check that tomorrow.

The box for connecting is under the deck stepped mast. Only way to get to it is to pull the mast again and check it. I am hoping that someone else has experienced this and that there is a logical fix that we cannot think of. I do not relish the thought of having them pull the mast up to check connections again.

Thanks,

Tom

Main Message Board / ST 60 Water Temp
November 29, 2006, 08:48:51 AM

My ST 60 package seems to work perfectly with the exception of water temperature. I like to have an idea of how cold I will be if I fall into northern Lake Michigan, which tends to make me think twice about not clipping on when I go forward. In mid summer I started getting readings of 102 to 104 degrees. I can assure you that Lake Michigan never sees these temps. It had worked fine until then.

I tried adjustments per the ST 60 literature but to no avail. I called Raymarine ( who I rarely get good information from) and they said I needed a new transducer. Before I go that route, just to find out what the water temperature is as speed is working fine, does anyone have any ideas on this one?

Thanks,

Tom Mallery
