Yikes! Get the water skies ready.

   What was your sail set?

How did you do in the race?

I am about to launch into this pre-splash maintenance and was curious if anyone had any advise. I hate surprises...

This is my sixth year with this boat and I am still surprised at its performance and my learning curve. Today I discovered that the boat will sail itself without autopilot.

I was on a close reach 20 degrees with about 12 mph of wind and 5 degrees of weather helm as she sailed on without touching the wheel. She would slowly drift to weather, stall slightly and fall off 1-2 degrees and than come back. It was a beautiful thing. I tried it again later in the day with the wind blowing 17-22. I had the same results with a little more weather helm but the boat maintained a straight course at six knots.

  Retirement ain't bad!

  Hi Mike,

In our Store you will find Yachta Lettering. Paul and Lynn Erb have an extensive choice of clothing available and can do custom work. They are great people and offer 15% off to members.

  Shawn,

Congratulations on finding a C34. I hope she surveys to your satisfaction.

Regarding the sailing charteristics of these boats they are very stiff and 12degrees is probably in the sweetspot range. You will know you are there when your doing 6+knots.

Welcome to the C34.org site this is a great resource.

Bill,

I was going through some old Practical Sailor mags and found in the March 2006 issue they did a study on AGM's and included the Optima. If you can't get your hands on it, I will mail it to you.

Essentially it says the weak point of the Optima is what Jay said, it does not have enough reserve capacity to be a good house bank battery. They rated the Trojan 27 AGM at about $169. to be the best in the group.

From the reading I have done on this board I think the best bang for the buck is 4 Trojan T-105's for the house and a side post automotive 12v. start battery back by the engine is the way to go.

Thanks for the replies on the antenna. The model I am going to purchase is the new Garmin 540.
It has a built in antenna and an input buss for a external antenna.

I have decided to go with the internal antenna and see what happens. I can always add the external if I choose.

I am going to treat myself to a new fixed mount chartplotter this season. We primarily sail very close to land, rarely going off the coast beyond sight of land. Do I need an external antenna? I never lost a signal with my handheld gps.

Stephan,

If you go to ebay and look for garmin 176c you will see the anti-glare films to apply over the screen. You will also find a anti-glare hood that fits on the unit.

Cheers,

   Jay,

MY experience with the 12v. cheapo air pumps is that they don't have the CFM to handle blowing up something very big. They don't last long either. If you want something to use dockside consider a small 1hp sears or similar pancake compressor. This will weigh about 40-50 lbs. and require 120v.

How long have you had your 34?

Main Message Board / Re: Loss of Prime with new impeller
November 01, 2006, 04:24:21 AM

I know this is a reply to an older post (6/06) but I just experienced the same loss of prime problem with the globe impeller.

I installed the impeller in April and it functioned fine all season. Yesterday when I was on the hard it would not draw the antifreeze up out of the bucket. Upon close examination of the impeller I found that the drive shaft was spinning inside the impeller. The nylon center that Globe uses had weakened and became oblong or out of center. This is really too bad because the impeller vanes looked like brand new. If Globe  puts a metal hub in their impeller it would solve the problem.!

I am going to cover the boat tosay for the Winter... :cry4`

I frequently singlehand due to the admiral still working and me retired.

Last week I was having a ball in 24-28 mph wind with only my 155 jib up. I was in the 6-7 knot range all day!

I almost went over the side when I set the autopilot on a reach to fill my coffee cup and light a cigar. I immediately put on my inflatable pfd and will probably wear it in the future when in those kinds of conditions.

Mark,

I just solved the same problem of overhead leaks showing through the vents. I found the answer through this board in a dialog between Stu and Al Landry. Al noted that his leak was due to stress cracks found around the raised portion of the deck that supports the travler and contains the dorade fixture. Check yours very closely for any fine cracks.

  Stu,

This probably too late at this point but being retired and frugal, I would test the orginal thrmostat in a pot of water on the stove to see waht happens at 159 degrees. Getting all of the air out of that water heater loop can be a real pia.

   Rod,

I am happy to hear that you are considering the purchase of a C34. They really are great boats!

I have not heard of a walk-through conversion to an MK1. Why not hold out for the boat you really want instead of buying the closed transom? Take your time
      and find the right boat.

   Good Hunting,

   Randy
