Main Message Board / SELLING YOUR BOAT
October 27, 2015, 06:03:34 PM
A word of warning ..... when you list your boat with a sales agency, watch the fine print or lack of.

I sold my Cat34 with Heritage Yacht Brokers and they were mostly a fine broker.

BUT  alas when  the final agreement filtered thru all umteen pages ... there was a inclusion of my custom altered dock steps.

Yeah I missed the fine print and shame on me BUT the song I got was that the steps were always included in the sale of the boat.
Funny that was not mentioned during the negotiations.  So my custom $400 plus steps were spirited away as the boat sailed  to hear new destination.

This is just a warning to future sellers of their second mistress.

I have to say,  Owning my Cat34 has been the highlight of my long boating life.

Enjoy your sailing .... do it whenever you can ...it always ends too soon   :thumb:

Main Message Board / good bye to a good friend
September 22, 2015, 08:45:15 PM
That old adage is absolutely wrong.  The two happiest days are ..... NOT.

After 14 outstanding years owning True Luff and prior 31 years in a Cat30 and Cal 20 I am hanging up my
skippers cap and retiring from boat owning.  Been sailing since my sea scout days and loved every
(well almost) minute of it.

It has been a great run.  I guess at this time I will just have to find a boat owner that needs a
wise ass adviser for his/her sailing strategy.  I will be available for lousy advice, race suggestions,
after race whiskey tasting and backing up the skippers lies as as to why we did not win.

As to my loved Cat 34 Mk II .... I have threatened  the new owner that he had better take extremely good care of my baby.

Hearafter I will monitor this web sit and vivaciously sail with you all.  Thanks for these years of consul and
hints about boat care that has made my ownership even more pleasant.

Main Message Board / Fuel gauge
May 13, 2015, 10:41:03 PM
Trying to find info on the fuel gauge on my Mk II .  I find nothing on its operation and or what to ask for in a replacement.

It reads full when the power is on  and if I, after a miserable 3 ours getting at the 5 screws holding it in the tank in a totally
impossible location to reach, out and disconnect the power tab wire it reads empty,

What is the make and is there some diagrams available along with trouble shooting guides anywhere?

Main Message Board / A big Thanks
August 09, 2014, 11:43:47 PM
:cry4`  It is with deep regret that I must sell True Luff.  We have had True Luff since 2002 after
18 years in a CAt 30.  I have enjoyed the most pleasure in racing and cruising of any boat
I have ever owned.   I started my sailing career 70 years ago and have experienced laughs,
joy, soaking, pleasure, and terror in these years of racing and cruising.  Whatta run!   :party

Who ever said the happiest parts of owning a boat is when you buy and sell it is our of their mind
or else they never had a boat as great as a Catalina.  It is NOT a happy time parting with a fine sailing craft as this.

Our ownership experience has truly been augmented by the great input on this website.
Thanks to Stu and all the other "experts" that have added to my ownership esperience.
And so ..... True Luff now is going on the market with hope that the new owner will treat her
with the proper respect and enjoy those priceless hours on the water.

Main Message Board / Cabin table
September 27, 2013, 12:23:12 PM
Recently my table decided to remain in a halfway up position that made it unusable
for sleeping or eating.  Totally stuck and unforgiving.

Upon writing to Catalina Yachts, I received a rapid answer and Gerry Douglas advised me to contact Forespar directly.
I phoned them and they were perplexed and asked me to send it in.  I removed it from the table top since Forespar was not that far
I drove to their plant in Rancho Santa Margarita, Ca.  I was met by Art Gandy, he said I would have to leave it for complete inspection.  In a few days they sent it to my house fully repaired at no charge. :clap

This is a unit that has been in service for 12 years .... What service form a great company.  I certainly would have no reservations
regarding buying their products at any time.  Thank you Catalina Yachts and Forespar.

Main Message Board / leak fuel?
September 07, 2013, 05:05:58 PM
Horrors .... the bilge water has a red cast to it .... oily!  sopped it off the surface and found it was coming from under the engine.
an accumulation was settled in the sump under the engine and it was oily & red with a light viscosity.   My nose not being what it used to be, I solicited
opinion of a younger mate and he says it is diesel. Whew! I thought it might be trany oil.   Inspection of the engine while running
shows the seepage coming forward into the engine sump.  BUT I cannot see where it is coming from. ....... visually can not see a leak.
filters tight, injection gear all dry, leaks while engine running.

Does this tale of woe sound familiar to any of the expert owners out there?

Main Message Board / salon table
August 18, 2013, 12:50:43 PM
I have been reading various posting about the table mechanism and til now have been able to blissfully ignore the discussions.
Should've  listened!!  I have my table in a down position and it only will rise about 4-5 inches and comes to a hard stop.  Until that position is rotates freely but at the stop it is very stiff.  I have not lubed it either.
I figure the brain-trust out there must have encountered this problem sometime so I am soliciting advice.
Does anyone have a detail diagram of the inside of this fiendish device? That would help me also.

Main Message Board / refrig gasket
April 16, 2012, 04:33:10 PM
I gone over some past posts but I haven't found a writeup
on where and what to buy for a replacement gasket for
the top lid on a Mk II refrig.
Suggestions any one of this knowledgeable
assortment of experts?

Main Message Board / pelican hooks
April 07, 2010, 11:55:24 PM
Has anyone had the experience of the pin from the lifeline
pelican hook jumping into the ocean?   :cry4`
You know when the spring clip gets distorted and you pull to hard on it, it comes
out and nothing is left to retain the pin and spring.

There is no brand name on my hooks and where do I find a correct
size replacement pin and spring?  I have found some but a
different diameter.

Main Message Board / Air cleaner/silencer
April 01, 2010, 10:29:51 AM
Happen to notice that the foam is just about rotted out on my
engine air intake and wondered ...
what and where is the best source for a replacement.
It is the 35B engine.

Main Message Board / Sherwood Raw water pump
November 22, 2009, 03:26:49 PM
There does not seem to be a malfunction of my Sherwood raw water pump
but I have heard that when you see any
water showing in the weep holes you should do a repair job.
Conversely, I have also heard that it is not unusual to see some weeping
in those holes and maintenance is not needed.

I would love some input from this great panel of experts.

Main Message Board / Canvas Hatch cover
February 19, 2009, 04:18:14 PM
Any reasonable sources for a V-berth hatch cover for a 34 MK II?  Mine blew off during the last storm and am looking for somone that has the measurements of the standard hatch.  Locals want to come out and mea$ure for a custom made cover.

Main Message Board / fluxgate compass
August 17, 2007, 01:49:43 PM
Cat34 MK II owners .... where did you locate your fluxgate compass?
And what deviation were you able to achieve?

I've had trouble but by locating it in my wet locker high and near the door I was able to get the deviation down to 10.   But no lower and a few tries  much higher when a lower mount was used.

Main Message Board / autopilot
July 15, 2007, 09:52:24 PM
Raymarine 4000+ autopilot after working for a period of time, suddenly shows huge 10 plus lines of off course on the meter and veers over 80 degrees trying to correct the course. The lines show a port error (left on the meter) and boat veers to starboard.

Alternately, between these occurrances, the compass course on the autohelm meter makes changes from the magnetic course the boat is traveling. The meter does not hold a realigned input for any period of time. The readouit randomly goes in either direction and requires a new input for alignment.

During todays trip, "no fix" appeared several times on my chart and to get the GPS to reaquire, I had to shut down the system at the switch panel. Stopping it on the instrument did not reactivate the gps.

Sound familiar to anyone out there?

Main Message Board / screens
March 18, 2007, 07:56:27 PM
Do the screens for a Mk II fit on a MkI?  I have a set of screens that I have never used for my MkII for sale but I wouldn't want to sell them to a MK I owner if they didn't fit.  I've heard they are different but don't know for sure.

Main Message Board / Raymarine ST4000+
November 17, 2006, 11:34:08 PM
have a sick autohelm that stalls under a minor load.  checked the belt and adjusted the clutch to no avail.  Factory tech says it probably is the gear box or bearings in the motor.  ( the bearings race runs freely).  There is some ugly noised when the motor runs and stalls.  The serrated belt wheel is not slipping on the shaft.
Anyone of this great group of experts have a similar experience and if so what cures have you found rather than a factory R&R?

Main Message Board / Balls
October 31, 2006, 10:52:48 AM
What a mess.  I disassembled my Autohelm to inspect the belt condition (just like is says you should do) and upon opening it up the ball bearings promptly fell all over the cockpit and, you guessed it. some rolled right out the stern and GONE.   :cry4`

My problem is:  Where do you find a few (6) 8 mm. steel balls for replacement?  I've been quoted over $50 plus freight for a replacement assembly : but I don't need the whole @#@!%#$% thing.  Any help or ideas out there in our esteemed advisory group?

Main Message Board / alternator output
June 08, 2006, 04:43:29 PM
I have a hypothetical question regarding what if?

The switch under the chart table is an engine on switch and without it being in on position, the engine won't start.  Also we know that  we don't turn the main electric switch to off while the engine is running as the alternator just may burn up the diodes.

So, what could happen it someone accidentally turns the engine switch to off when the engine is running?  Does it disconnect the alternator output to the batteries.  I've not been able to isolate the wiring for that in the diagrams I have in the manual.

I don't intend to try that trick te see what would happen but I would love to have the detail of the engine on/0ff switch explained.  We have such a wealth of "experts" on this web site I know I'll get some good answers.

What is happening when the alternator output shows 0 voltage and the Tach also goes to 0?

every once in a while it is working but other times nothing?  could it be the field wiring or ?????

Main Message Board / Engine cut-off
September 16, 2005, 04:53:14 PM
on a cruise the engine started to run poorly and stall.  Investigation found the culprit was the steering quadrant flange catching the cut-off cable and partially cutting off the fuel supply.

I was a fault for stuffing the lazerette with gear but has this been a common occurrence ?

Anyone with rerouting advise?

Main Message Board / AC battery charger
July 17, 2005, 01:43:37 AM
I find my AC charger is now producing 0 amps.  I went thru the usual checks ... on light is indicating AC to the unit is on, have disconnected negative to the battery for 3 minutes, etc but no amps and no battery charging.

Does this sound familiar to the experts out there?    It's a stock factory furnished unit almost five years old.

Main Message Board / Eletrical Panel
April 29, 2005, 08:04:16 PM
For some reason my green AC power pilot light on the nav station panel decided to give up.  I've tried to locate a replacement for this little light at the usual places (West Marine, etc) and haven't found one that fits yet.  It's 1/4" dia. and about 1/2" long and of course 120AC.  There are plenty of 12DC LEDs available but this one seems to elude me.

Anyone else here that has had that problem? :?:
