Main Message Board / Cockpit folding table
March 31, 2023, 02:40:26 PM
This year's winter project was to replace the rickety old folding cockpit table which was basically falling apart. After searching for replacements and being staggered by cost, I decided to build my own. Searching for plans online proved fruitless so looked at a bunch of photos of examples on pedestals with similar dimensions to our boat and came up with my own plan.
Happy to share dimensions of the parts if anyone is interested. Would have saved me a bit of time and experimenting.

Main Message Board / After market fittings?

Firstly, I would like to say how terrific it is to have such a great resource for troubleshooting. This association has been a wealth of information to me as I get to know my Catalina 34.
I have been tracking down a couple freshwater leaks in the boat using guidance from the tech notes and wiki as well as the discussion board. The general symptoms were water in the bilge and the freshwater pressure pump kept running. Found two so far, the 1st is a leaky inspection port on the forward freshwater tank - a huge relief it was not the tank itself!
The second was a split check valve leading to the hot water tank. The faulty valve photo is attached.
I went to my marina chandlery and the only thing they had on hand was Sea Tech.  I was a bit skeptical, but everything snapped together nicely and it's doing the job, but I wanted to know if anyone else has incorporated these fittings in their Catalina what their opinion is?

Main Message Board / Lighting close call
May 01, 2022, 10:48:19 AM
We have been replacing the halogen lights in our new-to-us Mark II with LED bulbs. The PO did mostly day sailing and had not bothered to update the lamps.
This is what I found in the Salon and Galley light fixtures when I removed the halogen bulbs. Clearly the fixture was not designed to withstand the heat halogen lamps produce.
This was a fire waiting to happen, and for me, an indication to review all the light fixtures and remediate damaged or weak fixtures.
Let this be a warning to those who may still be using halogen lamps on board or new owners as a must check item.
