Main Message Board / Re-sealing Pedestal Guard Base
October 25, 2020, 11:36:24 AM
After washing down the boat in preparation to putting the winter cover on, I discovered the aft cabin mattress was wet. I removed the cover below the pedestal and found evidence of some past leakage and verified it by pouring water around the feet for the pedestal guard. Obviously I need to re-seal these. The four screws on each base are not through bolted so I assume they are screwed into wood core or maybe an embedded aluminum plate???? I am hoping to just remove the four screws for each base and get enough room to work some butyl tape into the joint and re-install without having to loosen up the bolts for the pedestal. Anyone out there had success with this technique?

I want to convert my factory set up of 2 x 8D cell battery to a single bank of 4 x 6v golf cart batteries plus a starting battery. I have seen several examples of installing the starting battery under the aft berth. This requires a rather difficult and long cable run to the main isolating switch location. I was test fitting a battery box and found that with a bit of rerouting of plumbing, a starting battery may be able to be located outboard of the water tank which puts it in proximity of the main battery bank. This would require constructing and glassing in a battery box holder. The cable runs would be shorter than from under the aft berth. Just wondering if anyone has successfully accomplished this and if you could share some tips.

It is the end of the boating season here in Niagara so after haul out last week, I decided to remove the transmission and investigate the condition of the damper plate. I'm assuming it is the original, a R&D 22B4. Seems to be in perfect condition. Splines on both the damper and transmission show no excessive wear. Very little backlash in the gearbox. After looking at this forum, the C350 and the C36 forum, I get the sense that a change in damper flexibility may eliminate or reduce the rattling noise which is a product of a lightweight flywheel on this engine combined with low RPM.

PYI (the North American agent for R&D) sell more flexible dampers. The original 22B4 has a deflection of 3 degrees. They sell a high deflection model 22AM4 that has 30 degrees deflection. I would like to hear from other owners that have tried to get rid of the low speed rattle by changing the damper and what type of damper has worked or not worked. I am also considering installing the R&D flex coupling insert.

I won't be reassembling until the spring so I have lots of time to research and make my decision.

Thank you
