Main Message Board / Turning Radius
November 16, 2020, 07:47:27 AM
Does anyone have an approximation on the turning radius of the C34?   I've never really tested how tight of a 180 degree turn I can make without having to back and fill.  Just curious if anyone else has.
Anyhow, it's a boring Monday so I figured I'd post the question.
Thanks.

The US Coast Guard is undertaking a survey OF PUBLIC INPUT for navigation aides in less than 12 feet of water which expires on NOV 1st.

Many believe it is the prelude of trying to discontinue them.

That is why as many people as possible should take the survey – it only takes a couple of minutes – and indicate how important the aids to navigation are –

The survey can be found on line at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ShallowWaterWAMS

Since the survey must be completed by NOV 1st we urge you to inform all of your fellow boating enthusiasts ASAP.

Main Message Board / Looking for CNG tank
September 23, 2020, 05:54:33 AM
If anyone is considering switching or has switched from CNG to LPG and are interested in selling their CNG tank, please let me know. I'm in the market for a second tank and am having no success finding one.
Thanks in advance. I'm in the Baltimore area but would be willing to travel a reasonable distance for pickup.

Main Message Board / A satisfied owner...

We just finished our first 5 day cruise around the Chesapeake Bay.  We've owned the C34 since the first of July but the weather has been miserably hot with little to no wind so we only did a few short day sails.  We moved up from a Tartan 30 to the C34.  My wife and I are both so impressed with this boat.  The roominess, comfort, layout,...   We couldn't be happier with our choice.  I still have things I'm upgrading and bringing up to my standards, but we are thrilled.  Can't wait for more overnighters.  Even the dog loved it!

Preparing for our first extended trip and wanted to top off the fuel tank. (first time fueling up for me on this boat)  Using jerry jugs I added just under 5 gallons from the first jug. Gauge showed just under 3/4 full. Filling from the second one I hear the gurgling in the hose with maybe 2 gallons left in the jug.  Nothing from the vent hose btw.  Ok, that's full enough for this trip.  Head down below and get hit with the smell of diesel. Start tracking it down. Started in the head behind the sink and there was the stream and stink. Got out the oil absorbing pads and started soaking it up. Open the bilge and it has migrated there.  More pads, booms. Spent a couple of hours flushing and sopping up diesel.  Of course the whole boat stinks, aft cabin too. We leave on our anniversary cruise The next morning and thank God my wife never complains once.  Said she only smells it a little when the boat is closed up. Maybe I should send her for a nose checkup 😎  We're getting home this afternoon and my first task after unpacking is to find the source of the leak. I'm guessing the vent hose is the culprit.  Welcome to boat ownership....

I have an old CDI continuous line furler on our new to us boat.  I hate it.  Partly because the PO did such a poor job of splicing a new line on it but also because it is a bear to furl/unfurl.  I purchased a new Harken MKIV unit 2 that I will be installing after the season ends.  My question is, does anyone know the proper line size for the old CDI continuous line furler?  I think perhaps what is there is too large.  Even when the lousy splice isn't in the drum it is still hard to turn.

My new to me 1987 C34 is struggling to get above 2300 RPM underway.  It was hauled and bottom cleaned on June 24th for survey.  On delivery home I had some steam coming from the exhaust and it was running a bit hot at higher rpms so we throttled back. New impeller solved that problem. We've only had it out twice for short motoring trips since getting her home due to lousy weather. Took it out yesterday to knock some crud off the bottom and we were very slow across the bottom (GPS speed). I ran it up to full throttle and it only got to 2300 RPM and just over 4kts. I throttled back, shifted to neutral and ran up the throttle and it was well north of 2500 rpm and climbing so I throttled back thinking the issue isn't with the tach (even though it had acted up on the delivery home. Cleaning some terminals seems to have solved that issue).  Water temperatures are abnormally high so growth on the prop is possible. I'll check it with a GoPro today. Could anything else be contributing to the low RPM and speed?  I'll check the packing nut temp today while running it in the slip.
Thanks

Main Message Board / Aft lazerette thru hull
July 25, 2020, 02:13:13 PM
At survey we discovered the thru hull above the water line on the stb side of the aft lazerette has cracked. The exterior flange is only being held on by friction. The hose is a white corrugated hose. I couldn't trace it all the way but I believe it is the bilge pump hose.  Two questions, is this actually the bilge pump outlet and is a standard marelon thru hull with hose barb the correct replacement?

Main Message Board / Tannin stain remover
July 15, 2020, 03:43:40 AM
New owner here.  Been lurking around the forums for a while though and getting lots of tips from Stu.  I just bought a 1987 C34 that had a fair amount of tannin staining.  I'm not planning on hauling the boat until the end of the season but I wanted to try to clean her up a bit before then.  I realize Mary Kate ON_OFF works well for this application but I didn't want to use it while in the water.  It is a fairly strong acid and it is not recommended for use while in the water.  I found a product call Booyah Clean https://www.booyahclean.com/collections/booyah-clean-front-page-products and figured why not give it a try.  I used the boat soap sprayed at low pressure thru my pressure washer and then followed up with high pressure.  It cleaned the hull but didn't do much on the tannin stains. They recommended using it before the stain remover.  I then applied the stain remover with a little pump up garden sprayer from bow to stern.  I went back with the pressure washer to rinse and the stains were gone.  I'm really impressed.  It isn't cheap but it is EPA certified safe for direct release.  I have no affiliation with the company, just thought I'd pass along something that worked well for me.  I'm in the Chesapeake by the way.
