Main Message Board / Downwind Racing
June 18, 2013, 08:53:26 AM
I thought to ask the question of our forum for experience and advice when sailing downwind in a race. If in a typical windward/leeward course, what is your preferred course angle when running to the leeward mark in say 10 knots of true wind? And, do you change the course angle as the wind increases or decreases to maximize VMG to the mark? Does running a C34 wing and wing produce good race results? I realize there are many other factors at play here and am looking for a general impression. Thanks in advance for any replies.

There is so much great information on the forum about C34 wiring. I have to admit, this is not an area of expertise for me and the depth of the information can blurr the eyes and daze the mind. I've almost completed a full wiring diagram of the boat and have traced all major positive and negative runs. I'm getting ready to begin to reroute what is directly wired to the batteries to another DC panel at the nav station; autopilot, CO2 sensor, stern seat lights, DC outlets, and inverter, to name most of them. There is also a second smaller electrical panel already at the nav station wired directly to the house bank batteries for the radar/chartplotter, spreader lights, and some newer cabin lights. Wouldn't it be better to jump this smaller panel and another one off the primary panel? Also, how best would the small 1500 watt inverter be wired? Finally, what should be left directly wired to the battery bank besides the obvious bilge pump?

Main Message Board / Garboard Drain
June 16, 2011, 08:35:18 AM
A delayed spring launch caused by major flooding here in our area gave me no excuse but to complete some pending projects. One of those "I'll get to" projects has been to install a garboard drain in the bilge to remove water coming down the keel stepped mast during our long winter layup. A Perko 124 purchased about 3 years ago and #10 bronze machine screws, washers and nuts, a small amount of West epoxy and 3M 4200 were the materials. The fiberglass is about 1/2" in this area just aft of the mast. Although slighly elevated off the bilge floor, the drain works well with a cloth to wick low levels of water out - and there's been plenty of rain to test it! I still have to sand off the 4200 when completely cured and then finish with a barrier coat and bottom paint around the exposed area of the drain plug.

Main Message Board / Dahl 61 Filter Replacement
June 15, 2011, 10:14:08 AM
Does anyone know of or use a Racor replacement for the Dahl 61 or 61W filter for the Dahl 60 fuel water separator? Searching the web hints at a replacement but doesn't go as far as cross referencing a replacement. Thanks.

Main Message Board / Forward Hatch Replacement
April 23, 2009, 11:54:03 AM
I intend to upgrade the opaque solid forward hatch with a Lewmar 65 trapezoidal hatch. I searched this site for information about this specific replacement and found a lot of material but it was short of exactly matching the same hatch replacement I want to do this spring. The current hatch is slightly contoured and seats onto a frame intergral to the boat. I'll have to cut and chop away at this fiberglass frame - don't know to what degree yet - to get the frame to seat correctly. Has anyone done this before or can someone point me in the direction of information that exists already? Also, what sealant would you recommend? I was thinking of 3M 101 - polysulfide.
