Main Message Board / Engine overheating
June 27, 2022, 05:36:00 PM
Today, when motoring out of the marina, the engine was working fine until I ran it over 2,000 rpm.  At that point, the engine overheating alarm sounded and the temp was almost 240.  I shut the engine down and checked the raw water strainer, which had a few pieces of seaweed, but not much.  I cleaned it out.  After sailing, I headed into the marina at idle speed, water was coming out the exhaust, and I had no overheating.  In the slip, I ran the engine at idle and checked the exhaust and all was well. Temp was 160.  I moved up to 1500 rpm and all was well. Same at 1800.  But once I got over 2,000 rpm, it started to head to 200.  I am assuming I have a cooling inlet hose that is collapsing at 2000 rpm.  Does that sound reasonable?  I haven't taken the water pump apart to check the impeller, but will.  I don't know that the hoses have ever been replaced.  La Buena Vida is a 2001 C34 mkll, with the M-35 B engine.  To replace the hoses, does anyone know how long each is and the diameter of each?  I printed the diagrams on the WIKI, but the I don't know if the diameter of the B hoses is the same as the older ones on the WIKI.  Any help or advice would be appreciated.

When I took the cover off my boat, the non-skid was covered with black algae or mildew.  I tried scrubbing it with my deck brush, but there is still a lot left.  Is it safe to use an 1800 psi pressure washer to try to clean the non-skid?  Any other suggestions?
Thanks

The swivel (hoist car as Charleston Spar calls it) for the furling mast on my 2001 Catalina 34 MKII is on its last legs.  I am wondering if anyone has a used one they would be willing to sell or are aware of a damaged furling mast for a Catalina 34 or 36 from which one might be salvaged.  Email me at dohagen@sbcglobal.net.
Thanks,
Dan

I took my main down for the winter with no problems.  I have a 2001 Catalina 34 MKII.  When I went to raise the halyard, which is attached to the swivel, to try to reduce the banging of the furling foil in the mast, I can't get it to fit in the track.  So it is stuck at the boom.  Any ideas as to what is wrong or how to fix it?

Main Message Board / Transmission failure
June 28, 2020, 12:17:46 PM
I changed the transmission fluid on my 2001 C34 MkII last fall for the first time.  Until then, it shifted fine.  Then, I had trouble shifting from reverse to forward.  It would take a few seconds before it shifted.  If I advanced the throttle slightly, it would go into gear.  Thursday, I was coming into the slip and the guy next to me backed out in front of me, so I had to quickly shift into reverse and heard a clunk., but the boat went into reverse and then into forward when I shifted back into forward.  Yesterday, we took the boat out, again having a slight  hesitation in going from reverse to forward.  Then, as we were motoring just outside of the marina at about 1800 RPM, there was a clunk and I lost forward and reverse and we had to be towed back in.  The cable is still connected to the transmission, and the lever at the transmission moves fore and aft, but nothing happens at the prop shaft.  Is it possible that the shift lever at the transmission is loose on the shaft into the transmission?  I couldn't tell yesterday.  Or do I have to replace the transmission, or is there something else that is wrong? Any help would be much appreciated. By the way, the shift lever has always hit the pedestal when shifting into forward, but no trouble in the 12 years I've owned it until now.

The belt on my ST4000+ broke.  After replacing it, I could not get the wheel to turn properly when it was engaged.  I bought a replacement wheel portion, which turned out to be the EV100 wheel.  I installed it using the old cable as it would be a nightmare to replace the cable.  Now, it will not hold a course.  It will start with making small adjustments and then they keep getting larger and larger until I was weaving like a drunk.  I tried adjusting the gain to no avail.  I re-swung the compass and adjusted the heading on the autopilot to match the boat compass.  Now it holds until I engage the autopilot, whereupon it changes.  Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Dan

I have the gray Raymarine ST4000 autopilot.  My belt is too tight and won't let me turn the wheel smoothly when the autopilot is not engaged.  I know there is a small plastic plug on the back side that allows me to access a small allen screw with a small hole to the right and left to adjust a small silver wheel.  However,  I cannot get the allen screw to turn and don't know if I get it to turn, whether I need some sort of wrench to fit the 2 holes to make the adjustment.  Any ideas?

Main Message Board / rocker switches for cabin lights
January 17, 2010, 06:46:08 PM
When it got cold here in TX, I turned on the circuit breaker for the cabin lights and then hit the rocker switch on the fixture itself.  I hear a snap, but the light didn't come on. Now the switch won't stay in either the on or off position.  I tried several other fixtures and the same thing happened.  I took the switch itself out of the fixture, but don't know where to find one.  Any thoughts or anybody else had a similar problem?

Main Message Board / Steering quadrant
October 13, 2009, 07:56:25 PM
I have  a 2001.  I checked my steering and the quadrant seems to be about an eighth to a quarter of an inch lower than the turning sheaves for the steering cable.  As a result, the cables are rubbing on the top portion of the groove in the quadrant.  Is the quadrant bolted through the rudder post or can the bolts be loosened and the quadrant raised a bit?

Thanks,

Main Message Board / Wheel stiffness and creaking
May 25, 2009, 08:13:36 PM
I have a 2001 Catalina 34, hull 1592.  When I have weather helm or following seas, the helm is stiff and I hear a creaking.  If not under pressure, the helm is easy to turn and no noise.  Any ideas as to the problem or how to fix it?

Main Message Board / reverse polarity
November 08, 2008, 03:45:29 PM
Today I replaced a 12V ciruit breaker to my anchor light on my 2001 Catalina 34.  I did not remove any wires from the AC side of the panel.  However, after going sailing and reconnectilng my shore power, the AC said I had reverse polarity.  Anybody have any idea what would cause it and how to fix it?  Everything on the DC side of the panel seems to work fine.

Main Message Board / Odor through plastic fuel tank
October 24, 2008, 08:12:06 PM
I am getting the smell of raw diesel fuel in the cabin of the boat.  I checked all the fittings and find no leaks.  I smelled the side of the plastic fuel tank and it smells like the odor is coming right through the plastic of the tank.  I saw someone else had this problem a few years ago.  Does anyone have any advice or had a similar problem?

I have a 2001 Catalina 34 and have the smell of raw diesel in the cabin.  After checking all the fittings for leaks, it smells like the diesel has permeated the tank walls.  I saw a similar problem posted in 2005.  Anyone else have this problem or any advice?
