I am selling my 87 Catalina 34 after enjoyed the sails on SF Bay for more than 15 years. Our family just added a new infant, there's basically no time to sail/maintain it anymore. Details of the boat can be seen here

Thanks to both replies.

This is the old 4000 unit, not st4000. It does use a connector, which is prone to problems, which I already checked and I opened the unit box and verified the power did come on to the board itself. So it's not the power supply problem.

I called the Raymarine, they did not repair this unit anymore. The S1 wheelpilot cost over $1000, not sure I want to invest that much money on it yet, since I do not do long distance cruise.

It will be nice if I can get an older model, which is ST4000+ on a discount. I think some vendors still have it for sale about $800.

Meanwhile if you're replacing your old 4000, and have a control unit that I can use, please let me know.

cheers!

My old autohelm 4000 control unit failed this weekend, it wont powerup anymore. I checked the cable and connector, the power supply works fine. I guess the unit is dead.

Does anyone know how to get it replaced or repaired? I saw some infor about a retrofit kit to use st4000+ control unit? Is that true? If so, is anyone still carry it? I know Raymarine discontinued it.

I think one of the thing you can look into is the propeller. I have a wing keel C34 with a fethering prop, it makes a big difference. You can also looking into a folding prop.

Also you will need to see what the wind condition is, if the wind is light, it took more to power a much heavier C34 than C30.

sounds like a clue. I have been puzzled by the water under my v-berth too and filled the anchor locker with water and saw no leak from the drain hose. I'll check this screw, btw the water in my v-berth is salt water, so it must comes from something like this.

I've just purchased my vessel which is coast guard registered also. The previous owner has the number carved on a piece of wood that mounted insided the cabin. My surveyor said it does not meet coast guard requirement. He recommended me to put the number on the inside hall in the V berth storage. That should work, but I've not got the documment back to me yet. I guess I'll just glass/glue the letter to the hall should be ok.

Do you remember what model of the speaker? I'm planning to do the same, but haven't found speakers of that size can fit in.

thanks

Jenson makes an outdoor model for marine use that fits perfectly inside the coming cutouts on either side of the cockpit. I used 3-M 5200 adhesive to attach them to the underside of the deck so the speakers were facing down. This leaves about 2 inches of clearance to the bottom of the coming box. I also mounted a waterproof toggle switch in the coming box that will shut the unit off from the cockpit if needed for docking or using the VHF. It sounds great and gives a really good stereo effect and you can not even see them! Front speakers are the small metal box type mounted on a bracket on either side of the main cabin facing aft. Stereo is on bracket hung from under deck in front of nav station.89C34

Guys :This has been posted a number of times:
1.  The Sherwood is supposed to pump more water than the Oberdoffer.  Don't know how much is "more"?
2.  On my M25XP the Oberdoffer keeps the temp at about 160F.
3.  You can buy a discounted pump and/or parts for an Oberdoffer from DEPCO (800)445-1656.
4.  Sherwood will not allow anyone to discount their pumps or parts!!
5.  All parts and attachments on/for an Oberdoffer are brass, bronze or stainless - not so with the Sherwood
6.  The Oberdoffer is easy to rebuild (see the Mainsheet tech notes on the "how to do it").

:clap

Yes I did order it from DEPCO, the model is N202M-15. I think it's the new model replaced 202M-15 (maybe that's why the price is a bit higher).  They replace the gasket with O-rings, so make sure oder a couple those with the spare impeller. Mine just arrived today, they sent me the old gaskets instead of the O rings.

I know this is an old thread, but just want to update on the water pump price. I just ordered the oberdorfer pump from depco, it's $170. I don't know if it's inflation or the raw materials gets expensive. I asked another source, it will cost $190.

BTW, I just bought a 1987 model and this is my first project. Wish me luck.

Main Message Board / In mast furling main?
April 01, 2006, 02:31:53 PM

Does anyone have the in mast furler on their C34? Or have you sailed one with it?

How much performance do you have to sacrafice because of lost of sail area?

And more importantly, does the extra weight on the mast cause any balance problem? How about the balance of sail? Can you still adjust the balance of sail since you cannot bend the mast anymore. What about the weather healm? Or lee healm?

I'm looking for a used C34 now and just wonder if the in mast furler will ruin all the good things we know about this nice vessel.

Quote from: sailorickI would agree with Mr. Stu here.  We just completed the purchase of a 1988 C34 #746 (formerly "SIGNE") and used Peter for our survey.  He is very knowledgeable about Catalinas and gave us a very complete survey.

Congratulation Rick, so how much did you pay for your C34 if I may ask? And what the survey cost you by Peter? BTW I looked at your photo album, looks like a nice vessel.

Quote from: Stu JacksonSal, see my update above.  What is the hull number of the boat you are considering?

Thanks Stu, how do I contact Peter? the #402 is what I am considering now if I can work out a deal.

This actualy is not the first one that has a lot water in the bilge, which I did not feel comforable with because the owner does not seem to be consistent in telling/explaining all sorts of failures on the boat even though he was willing to sell for a lower price. Beleive or not he said he owned the boat since 92, but he did not know the hull number, not does the boat has a CF number, neither a name. I guess it's a good way to remain "anonymous" these days.    I think he sold it eventually, but with all sorts of problems the owner ignored to fix, I do not like inherit something like that.

Quote from: krawfoYou didn't specify what year the boat was that you looked but my 1988 has water in the bilge almost always.  The two most common ways water gets into the bilge are through various openings in the mast and via drips from the stuffing box.  There should NOT be any exhaust water in the bilge unless there is a leak in the exhaust system.  I guess water could also end up in the bilge via leaks from water tanks, ports, etc, etc. but I consider the above 2 circumstances normal.

Thanks for the reply. This is 89 model. I understand the water comes in through mast and  leaks of water tank or ports etc. specially after rain. But in california, there's no rain in summer at all. I have a 25 catalina will stay very dry the whole summer.

I think the owner probably is not telling the truth. He also pulls out the water heater, saying need to repair, so there's no way to test plumming system at all to see if any leaks in the wanter tank, hosts etc.
