Main Message Board / Re: Replacing Thru Hulls

Thanks for the pictures.  Looks exactly what I'm planning with the G10.

I looked up the forespar thru hulls that are reported to fit our hulls and I've attached the diagram below along with the trudesign diagram.  They are definitely not the same so I think I'm going Forespar marelon thru hull with trudesign valves.  Hopefully the attached will help someone to be able to refer to in the future.  As you can see on the trudesign is stepped instead of flared out.  Truedesign also is significantly less flared as tit ends up at about 1.65 inches round as opposed to the Forespar which goes out to 2.43 inches.

Thanks for the heads up. Otherwise I would have been buying the trudesign thru hulls and probably end up with the same issue you had.

Good to know on the taper. I'll have to search around for ken's post to try and get the dimensions of the taper.  I'm hoping to use the flush trudesign thru hills but if they don't have the correct taper it would make sense to just purchase the forespar units and pair them to the trudesign valves.

I have a bunch of g10 I was planning on using to add backing plates. Did you just epoxy to the hull or actually glass them in?

Yes I'm sold on the trudesign at this point with the load bearing collars.  I'm going to go both valve and thru hull from them. I believe the 1.5 thru hull was initially used for direct discharge. I was going to either delete or just put a new thru hull in. New thru hull route seems easier.

Thanks for the feedback on sizing. How did replacing go for you? Any challenges other than the expected?

Hi All,

I'm planning to replace all my thru hulls on my 1988 in June.  I have one that seems to be slightly leaking and a 1.5 inch bronze that is seized so I figure might as well get to the others and be done with them for another 3 decades.  I'm planning on installing tru designs as I would really like to stick to a non metal material.  The issue I'm having is confirming what size my thru hulls are.  I do know they are flush and not mushroom.  Can anyone confirm if my below info is correct before I start ordering?

Engine intake (under head sink) 3/4"
Toilet Intake (under head sink) 3/4"
Sink/Shower drain (under head sink) 3/4"
Prior direct waste discharge (Hanging closet next to nav station) 1 1/2"
Sink Drain (Under Galley sink) 3/4"
Macerator discharge (under port settee) 3/4"

Thank you.

In regards to changing the HX zinc a couple times a year I'm sure it's a bit overkill.  The one I remove likely has a lot of life left in it but the replacement zincs that screw into the cap are cheap enough I like to just stay ahead of it and not risk losing one into the hx.  I'm still trying to get used to maintenance schedules out in the saltwater vs when I was on the fresh side of the locks down in Seattle.  Growth and saltwater seem to create some increased maintenance.

Thanks I will get to the HX during the winter. It has been on my list but hasn't quite risen to the top yet. I know it's a new 3 inch version installed probably 4 years ago and hasn't been pulled since. I replace the zinc at least a couple times a season as I've also heard stories of how they corrode rather quickly and break off in there.

Ha I guess that's all the confirmation I needed to file it under don't worry about it.  I appreciate the responses!

in response to scgunner I did burn up an impeller last year but replaced and also rebuilt the entire pump.  I'm pretty sure I pulled all the vanes out of the elbow but there could be more in exchanger.  Regardless, I've pulled hoses downstream and I have plenty of flow through there.

Thanks all for the input.

Extremely late followup here but I've moved the video over to Youtube so everyone should be able to easily view.

https://youtu.be/uBJAgaRxaeY

To answer some of the questions posed:
        - I would classify as white but take a look at the video.
-Water temperature is about 50 degrees always (San Juan Islands, WA).  It seems to be present at all ambient temperatures I've been in but video was probably 65F to 75F
-Only happens under load once the motor is warmed up.  Is constant unless I'm under 2000 rpm.
-With thermal gun the temp of my exhaust tubing at the thru hull is less than 100F.  Temp on Engine thermostat area is right about at 160 regardless of rpm.

I appreciate any ideas or thoughts even if it's "don't worry about it and go sailing", which is partially why I haven't been able to follow up!

So I'm all in my head about the amount of smoke or vapor that is coming out of my exhaust.  It doesn't happen until the boat is warmed up and under a load of about 2200+ rpm.  The video is once the engine is warmed up and I'm cruising along at about 2500rpm.  I've noticed this  before but am unsure if this is a normal amount and nothing to worry about as other m25 motors I've had did not smoke/water vapor.

Just looking for some group wisdom here in chasing this down!

Hump hose is hooked up.  I'm leaking from the port that exits the muffler.

I haven't pulled off the hoses yet since I figured I'd like to pull the whole thing out to do any repairs and then assess since it seems like it will last another 30 years after good repair/replacement.

Stu,  I could be wrong but I was thinking there would be room to pull out the muffler from the wall panel the on the port side that covers the fuel tank area, not the access boards that are below the cushions.  Then again, I'm not at the boat and I might be thinking wrong about the wall panel relative to the location of the muffler.  I guess I'll go for the head cabinet exit strategy, maybe I'll be able to scoot it passed secondary fuel filter and electronics.

derekb,  On your pictures it looks like you removed the muffler tubes.  What did you use to replace?  Did you make your own?

Thanks for the input and links everyone.

Main Message Board / Muffler removal through aft cabin

I have a 1988 Catalina 34 with the Universal M25xp engine.

My muffler has been leaking slightly at the exit port for awhile and tightening hose clamps hasn't accomplished anything.  With the season slowing down slightly I am going to pull the muffler and either repair or replace it as well as replace the exhaust hose (all original).

My question is, since I have all kinds of things mounted under the sink in the head, has anyone had any luck removing the muffler through the aft cabin port side wood panel?  I'll be pulling the panel anyways to run the new exhaust hose so I figure it might save me some time as opposed to removing fuel filters, hoses, and regulators to try and squeeze it out of the cabinet in the head.

Thoughts?
