Wedges go in from the top, like shown in the pic posted by Noah.
It  was the larger end of the wedge that poked up through the boot on my boat.

My wedges all cracked, and then pushed up through the boot. I cut 4 new wedges and tapped them in place. Then to finish the job I followed a suggestion from Stu Jackson, which was to use scrap line and 3M sealant seated in the space between the mast and partners.   Never leaked a drop last year during our California winter when it actually rained a lot!  Wished I had done this years ago before the leaking water caused the paint on the interior mast section to bubble  :cry4`

My 1990 has a Faria replacement.  The only issue I have with it is that the digits in the hours LCD screen are very hard to see in full sun.

Glenn,
I like the stairs, nice job! Did you pull the floor boards out to refinish? I see they are missing from in front of the stars.

Main Message Board / Re: Installing a windlass
September 22, 2021, 05:09:56 PM
I am currently installing a windlass on my boat, a 1990 mk1.5.   It has the locker made for a horizontal windlass, but it didn't have one ever installed.  I have chosen not to use the horizontal orientation, but instead I'm going with a vertical type installed in a 3/16 thick stainless-steel bracket.  There are many write ups on various ways to do this, so thanks to all that have posted write ups!!  In addition to here, there is a great write up in the latest Mainsheet magazine under the Catalina 320 tech notes.
As to why the vertical, it's the cost of the windlass unit.
Maxwell VW10-8 = $2,000
Lewmar V700 = $670

I am also (like Noah) struggling a bit with the angle of the chain as it comes down the bow roller.  Not sure why Catalina decided to not make this perpendicular to the back wall of the anchor locker??  I think I will skew the windlass about 10deg. to compensate for this chain angle.

Sorry, I see my question being addressed in another active thread. Please ignore my question here. :abd:

Welcome, Medved!

Cliff,  I have a 1990 mk 1.5 with the same locker interior as yours.  I am thinking of putting a Maxwell in there. What model did you go with?  Have any pics of the install? Thanks!

I am wondering if this will work on my 1990 mk1.5 ?  I think I need a 15x10 . Is the size stamped on the collar?

Main Message Board / Teak Handrail Footprint Stain
September 10, 2018, 12:55:22 PM
I am in the process of replacing my teak handrails with stainless a set I am having custom fabricated.  The new handrail will not be touching the coach roof in as many places as the old teak ones. So, this requires getting off the old dirty footprints under the old handrails.  The footprint seems to be a combination of a little varnish around the edge that crept under the teak feet, and years of very stubborn dirt.  There doesn't appear to be any silicon sealer.
I have already tried various deck cleaning products with a very stiff brush and it doesn't budge (not even the dirt)! I am ready for something stronger, but don't want to hurt the grey deck paint.  Anybody been through this?  What do you suggest?

My reason for running the blower is to reduce the diesel smell in the aft berth after motor for long periods of time.  I am not concern about flammable fumes like I once was when I owed a boat with an atomic4.

The reason I asked was that I had a problem with the salon table that I varnished using epifanes. I found the directions are off by quite a bit for when you can put pressure on a surface after the last of several coats are applied.  This seems to be especially true when you do not allow a complete cure between each coat (hot coating I think it's called).

Thank you for the info about your refinishing process.  How long did you wait before walking on them after your last coat?

Looks great, and so does the refinishing of the sole :thumb:
I need to do both of these projects... here are a few questions:
1. The metal table base looks very pitted (like mine), did it need some filling prior to painting? Or just sandblasting?
2. What did you use on the sole? How may coats?

Thanks.

Main Message Board / Thai Teak Marine

I, along with others here, have used this company in the past to fabricate custom teak items.  Unfortunately, I placed an order for a teak cockpit table with these people about 2 months ago. Beware, they are no longer in business.  I got this email today.....

Unfortunately I have to inform you that Thai Teak Marine have bankrupt
(already for some longer time). All the workers are no longer here, that
is the reason why you havenĀ“t received any answer. If you have made any
payment, please contact the forwarder for helping you to return the money.

Sorry that I cannot help you more with this.

Best Regards,
