Fleet 5 / Helloooooooooooo Fleet 5
May 05, 2007, 12:02:16 AM
If you are a C34 owner in Washington State we invite you to join the C34 Fleet - Fleet 5. We held our first organizational meeting April 27 in Seattle. :clap We had folks from as far away as Olympia and Eatonville to the South and Anacortes and Bellingham to the North. We had a great time meeting all the other C34 owners that were at the meeting. We all had a chance to introduce ourselves and tell how we became involved in sailing. We scheduled our first cruise at the end of June and our second cruise for early September. Dates and destinations to follow so stay tuned. We are thinking the San Juan Islands for the first cruise and South Puget Sound for our second cruise.

Speaking of cruising:
If you are taking your C34 out for a week or a weekend or even a daysail and would like some company post where you are going on this site and let people know they are welcome to come along and who knows you might just meet some new C34 friends. :D

New friends, good pizza, great sailing stories - a great way to get Fleet 5 off to a sailing start.  :party This is going to be fun.

Hey Steve

I have the same set up wit the oil drain hose. I installed a threaded nipple and use a a vacumn type pump, available from West Marine. I remove the drain hose from the bracket on the engine and attach the hose from the pump to the threaded nipple on the engine drain hose. That creates a leak free connection. Then I use the vacumn pump to pump all the oil out. I have found that I can remove all of the oil without loosing even a drip - so no mess.

Main Message Board / Re: "Sailing" at Anchor
April 17, 2006, 11:11:07 PM
We use a riding sail while at anchor. It works very well. We bought it from Sailrite. We have a spllit backstay. We rig it using one side of the split backstay, hoist it with the main halyard and tie it to the deck to a stern cleat. We sheet it to one of the mainsheet blocks on the deck at the base of the mast. Everything is pulled very tight. The boat sits very quitly parallel to the wind. It is not difficult to rig but there is the cost of the sail.

You are right. The Weaver davits for inflatables are reversed.

I did some more looking and I found the post I was looking for. Turns out it was written up in the tech section of the Mainsheet in the C380 / C390 section. Hopefully it will work well on the C34.

If I decide to do it I will take some pics and write an article about it.

Thanks for your help.

In the last month or so I saw a message with pictures about mounting Weaver Snap Davits to a C34 and an inflatable dingy. I can not find the post. One of the pictures showed the dingy with the davit parts glued to it. One of the parts had been glued in the wrong place and removed and re-glued. The poster did not use the standard davit but one with an extension or a lift. I have tried the search function and did not find the message I was looking for.

Does anybody remember the message or who posted it?

Thanks for the help.

Main Message Board / Re: Rigging vibrations
October 31, 2005, 11:40:11 PM
I had the same problem with my 2000 C34. I asked Brian Toss - a highly respected rigger in Washington - and his answer was to hoist a fender using a jib halyard (attatch a down haul to the bottom of the fender) to a point a few feet above the spreaders. He said I may have to play with the height a bit to get it to work. I tried it and it works. The fender disturber the airflow around the mast enough to keep any harmonic vibration from getting started. I looks a bit funny but it works. He also told me to make sure my rig was adjusted properly for sailing and then do not change the adjustment to get rid of the vibration.

Hope it helps

Main Message Board / New Headsail???

I purchased a new 150% from Somerset Sails in New York. I checked out their web page (somersetsails.com), called them to place the order and about 4 weeks later it arrived at my post office (they sent it by US Postal Service). I used it most Wednesday nights for racing last summer. It is what they call a Cruz-Radial and is made of dacron. They were very easy to work with. They knew the boat but just had me double check the forestay length. It fit perfectly and appears to be well built and I have not had any problems with it at all. I asked them to build it for my Schaffer 2100 furler but I have never rolled it up. I did not have a UV cover put on since I did not want the extra weight. I only use it for racing and at the end of the evening my crew folds it up and puts the 130% back on the furler. I would buy another sail from them. Just my .02.

Main Message Board / Anacortes Fleet

Jack, Ray, Randy, Captran and other Anacortes C34 Owners

It sounds like there might be some interest in getting a C34 Fleet started in the Anacortes area. The Officers of the C34IA are happy to help. I can send you a packet of information and instructions that was designed to help make the start up process quick and easy. We also have $300 available to help offset startup costs. Stu Jackson can provide you with a list of all C34IA members in your area. All you really need to do is arrange a meeting and elect Fleet Officers.

Any interest???

Let me know what your C34IA Officers can do to help.

Congratulations on your recent purchase. One of the first things we did after buying Unzipped was to add midship cleats. We purchased two Shaefer midrail cleat/chocks for 1 1/4 inch track. They have been on the boat for over 3 years with no problems. They are just slid on the outboard track and can be easily moved as needed. They can be purchased at Sailnet or most anyplace that sells marine hardware. They are one of the best things we bought for Unzipped. The other was an Espar heater. You can see them at the following link:

Main Message Board / Wind Speed Indicator Advice

Hi Mike

I mounted my instruments in a simaler fashon to what you are thinking (2 NavPods). All 4 instruments are mounted in a 4 instrument NavPod. Below that I mounted a larger NavPod and installed a Chartplotter on one side. This leaves me room on the lower (larger) NavPod for another display, possibly radar. I would consider any future purchases (chartplotter, radar, cockpit VHF) and how to mount them now. You might think about moving auto to the side of the lower NavPod to keep as much available space available for future use or even upgrading your orderd NavPod to one large enough to mount a chartplotter or radar in. This set up has worked very well for me.

I ended up mounting the base on the starboard seat on the swim step. I mounted the ring to the stern rail just to starboard of the swim ladder. I did this last summer. It work great. The base is not in the way. I mounted the stern rail motor mount on the port side stern rail. The lift can easily pick up the motor and move it to the dingy and back. As an added benifit the pole of the lift (when in place) makes a great hand hold when using the swim step to get in or out of the dingy. I also made a sunbrella bag to store the lift and tackle in so that I can put it away when not in use.

There is a zinc on the the strut on Unzipped. I did not put it on - I have changed it. It was put on by my dealer during commisioning. A hole was drilled thru the strut and a 3" diameter clamshell zinc intatlled.

Main Message Board / Bent Prop Shaft
July 22, 2004, 08:22:24 PM
A quick update.

Unzipped went back in the water yesterday. I replaced the prop shaft with a stainless one. I also replaced the cutlass bearing.

I did not notice any vibration while motoring before this work but it had to be there. Now, while motoring, it is noticibly smoother than before.

I decided not to re-pitch the prop at this time but to save my pennies for a folding or feathering prop next year.

Thanks for all your advice.

Thanks for the ideas Ron.

I am going with a stainless shaft and plan to replace the cutlass bearing too. I will check the article you wrote and consider repitching. I do have the factory installed 3 blade. What pitch do you recomend?

Hi All

Thanks for the advice. I have decided to replace the shaft and have the prop looked at by a prop shop just to make sure it is not bent too.

I was present at the haul out so I know that the yard did nothing wrong.

Thanks again for the help.
