Sorry to hear about your bad luck.

All the previous comments point to a survey. I concur! One more piece of advice though. In my experience. You have one shot with your insurance company. If you come back to them with additional and previously undiscovered damage. They will probably not even talk to you. When I had an issue with an insurance claim a few years ago. My brokers advice was, "to make the claim a good one." I did, and when I found small effects of the incident a year or so later. I did not feel taken.

Has any one asked Catalina Yachts there opinion and reasoning on the size of the OEM running rigging. Is it just a cost measure that they have 3/8" line? Or is there something else? My problem with the line had to do with the center core breaking through the outer core. It was only 3 years old when the issue came to light. It appears the quality of the line was so poor that the outer core weave was so loose that it allowed the center core to break through in multiple places. I could live with the 3/8". As I think it is only for the ease of handling that makes the 7/16" a better choice. I could do with out the extra line thickness in the cockpit.

Comments please.

Mert, sorry if this thread has been hijacked. Have you received a reply re the your email inquiry on the VPC? What was the just of your email question?

Thanks Ron,

When you upped the size to 7/16". I assume there was no issues and it was just a straight swap. Is there any thing different on the Mark II versions of our boats that would be cause for concern? I assume pulley size, load angles through blocks and Jam Cleats will all be fine.

Any experience/comments, any one?

Ron,

What is the life expectancy of  your Sta-set-X or any other quality line? My OEM halyards on a 2004 C-36 are past usefulness and safety. Quality has to last  longer than that. How do you  know?

John, Take your present wheel off and you will know right away. There is an adapter kit yes. But order the right one and you don't have to worry about the kit.

John, I have one on my c-36. It is great. As I have the built in cockpit table. The folding wheel is even better, as the space back toward the wheel is a little narrow between the table and the cockpit seat. I don't think it could effect the autopilot. When you order it make sure you get the right hub style. Mine was a straight keyed shaft. Twice the dealer sent the wrong one. A tapered keyed shaft. If I had to say anything against the wheel. It appeared a little flimsy at first as compared to the rigid wheel. That feeling quickly dissappeared with use. Go for it!

I was struck by lightning last year in my C-36. We were motoring in a severe squall and while it was not a direct hit it fried all of our electronics. We estimate the lightning to hit the water about 50yards behind us. The moral of the story is. Replace ALL of your electronics even if they appear to be working. According to Raymarine they are now unstable at best. I know they have a slightly biased oppinion but it does make sense. We found some soldered joints fully intact and others ready to part.

Our  insurance company was excellent to deal with and while it sort of ruined our holiday. We have a kick A set of electronics for this years cruise.

Use a dremel (small grinder that takes different discs). It is like a grinder on a much smaller scale. Grind/cut only as deep as you have to in order to break through the metal. Cut the larger hole for the wire 1st. You can then see the wires in the pedestal and move them out of the way in order to use a conventional drill for the screw holes.

Lots of good advice here. But further to Stu's comment about the scotch tape on the corners/creases of a folded chart. What I do is put the scotch tape on when the chart is new. There is a much longer life expectancy of the chart.
Also when we cruise. I often have to use 8 to 10 charts. Before departure, I organize them in the order that I will need them. As one we sail through one chart and on to another one. I put the one we just sailed off of on the bottom of the pile. Then on the return trip I just reverse the process.

I agree they do protrude into the cockpit. But they are hinged and are easy to remove at the hinges. I have a full enclosure on my boat. When we cruise my wife likes to keep the mosquito's out from down below or the cool night time air out as well . This door has a screen plus options for a full privacy door etc. etc. Taking the boards in and out can be a pain. Besides the teak needs constant attention. Expensive yes, but.........

I am about to order new zacor doors  http://www.zarcor.com to replace the teak boards in the companion way. Does anybody have these? Can any one offer a comment?
