Tom, a freak thing happened to me causing just such a situation. Had it not happened to me, I wouldn't believe it. I had a failing O ring on the strainer...failing just enough to cause the pump not to prime, yet did not leak when the thru hull was open. Shortly there after, the same thing happened to the prime on the fresh water pump, then the AC within a week. All were identical strainers of apparently the same vintage. Who'd a thunk it. Give it a whirl...may cost a buck fifty at the hardware store...

My story is similar to Ken's...just at the opposite end of all the plumbing with a shop vac. Save $$'s on antifreeze and there is nothing to flush out come spring. Definitely drain the hot water tank first or the project will take 6 gallons longer!

Luck to ya Kirk...let us know how it goes. I'd volunteer as crew if I weren't on the other side of the continent!!

John, it is disappointing to hear or your troubles...I've been dreaming of forced air diesel heat for some time. 5 amps/hr isn't all that bad...? Fuel consumption is like .10 - .25 gal/hr? Seems reasonable to overcome frost and snow on deck...

Steve, you installed an Espar or a Webasto? Any complaints? Additionally, you diesel heater guys have to "re-winterize" the auxiliary after the sailing excursion, eh? Water tanks, water heater and head too? Sounds cumbersome for a weekend of sailing in winter...but enticing none the less!

Paul, there are a lot of variables to consider (towing how far, over what terrain, how often, etc.). If the answer to even one of those questions is " > 30 miles", "mountainous or interstate travel" or "more than once a month" I'd say a 3/4 ton truck is certainly desireable. I think the folks over at the C25 Association will agree. I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it with less...

Guys : If you are going to replace the side port lens, also order a gasket from Defender.  The gaskets are about $15.

Mr. Hill, the gasket is an integral part of my lenses (or stuck with some wicked good adhesive)...the aluminum frame the gasket mates to is smooth...I'm confused... :think

Mark...the hard work is done, with your setup, it is easy to chase one more duct line down the port side to the aft cabin!

Main Message Board / Re: Noise below cockpit while sailing
« on: September 07, 2011, 06:48:55 PM » light of the PYI, have you "burped" it lately? Could be some air in here...sometimes I get more vibration than others...burping seems to help...

But I'm still gonna' get to dialing in my alignment...sometime...I know I'm closer to it than I've ever been...I swear it...

Some superfluous info to interject...

I have a Cruisair 16K unit. For giggles and grins, Ken Juul brought over his Honda 2000 to see if it was up to the task of running a 16K unit on the hook. The myth is confirmed...Honda 2000 will indeed run a 16K Cruisair unit...

I intended to report this earlier...thanks for the memory jog!

Couple things...transmission in reverse when sailing if a couple tenths of a knot don't matter. If speed matters, go to neutral. If speed really, really matters, get a folding prop. Otherwise, I would think the "thunk, thunk" could be either the cutlass bearing or your shaft alignment. I have a mild "thunk, thunk" in neutral...and honestly, I've been meaning to assess my shaft alignment for some time! I'll get there...I believe +/- .003 is the magic number?

Main Message Board / Re: Mast boot is beat...

I cannot say with any degree of certainty that my mast boot is original. Chatting with others however, I think mine is peculiar. It is made of what appears to be hypalon...same stuff as the everyday average inflatable dink...and it is one piece. The PO even made a nice sunbrella cover to make it aesthetically pleasing...apparently too late though. The UV has eaten away the flexible coating...the rubber coating is cracked and peels right off. I'm looking at fabric...which is leaking like a sieve...

Kurt, thanks for the offer. Have the clamps that go with it by chance?

Lance, you did what CD tech support says can't be go dude!  :donno: 8)

Thanks for the insight folks...

I just replaced the forward V hatch seal on our '87 with this gasketing from Catalina appears to be a direct replacement if you still have the solid hatch...
