Main Message Board / Tachometer fluxuation
October 01, 2013, 09:32:38 PM
The tachometer reading on Blue Magic, our 34 Mk II, will intermittently increasing by up to a thousand rpm without a change in the throttle or the observed (sound) engine speed. The rpm will eventually return to its previous reading then jump again. The initial readings of the alternator showed normal output. Same for the back of the tachometer. I am stumped as to the next step. Any ideas would be most welcome. Thanks Roger

Main Message Board / Re: Holding Tank Vent

Running a new line from the holding tank to a vent just under the toe rail resolved my problem of a clogged vent line thru the stanchion. I also added a tank monitor at the same time. You would be absolutely amazed at the built up pressure in the tank when pump out deck plate was opened. I leave the rest to your imagination.

The 'pressurized' holding tank has occurred this summer on my '05 Mk II (1723).  The stanchion vent was partially plugged. As noted in Peggie's recent post, the pump out was only partially successful. Pumping out via the macerator caused the tank to became a vacuum. The result was sucking sea water pass the macerator. These tasks are underway. First, install a thru hull vent to replace the stanchion vent. A 1/4" hole in the stanchion at the end of a 5/8" hose just doesn't make sense. Next is to put a air loop in the system to prevent possible future back flow. And yes, a tank monitor will be added.

I offered Glenfiddich until a friend brought Glenmorangie aboard. It has an amazing burgundy wood finish. Excellent.  :clap

I raised a similar sounder concern with the local Catalina tech folks. The response I received echos Ken's comments: The transducer will see thermo clines and the difference between brackish and saltwater as differences in depth. You will find readings with fluctuate quite a lot in our waters (Strait of Georgia, Gulf and San Juan Islands). The transducers that Raymarine uses are "Airmar" and are used by almost all recreational onboard electronic companies. ...  recommend that you use your chartplotter as the first source of depth info (depth contours) and use the depth sounder in the shallow areas to confirm.

The Anniversary Edition C34 came with autopilot, windlass, ... . My biggest item is a 12v outlet at the pedestal to run a laptop with nav software and gps. A plotter is in the future. It would be handy to have the power for an emergency spotlight. Next would be a pair of solar panels - one on each side atop the dodger.
