Main Message Board / Re: Deck Stepped Mast Issues?
September 07, 2016, 01:05:30 PM
Yes, Sailboat Data has the changing to keel stepped happening in model year 87. That bears out in the boats we have looked at. I assume Catalina only changed because there were issues, but would love to be told otherwise!

Noah, are you an SDYC Guy? We are as well and that is where we are planning on basing to boat

Yeah, will for sure plan on sailing it as is for a while. I suspect we would get used to the wheel. Just curious if anyone has done it. Did not think of the resale value, that is a very good point!

Thanks

Main Message Board / Deck Stepped Mast Issues?

We are looking at an 86' and an 87'.  One of the biggest differences is the Mast Step Location. I would prefer the Keel Stepped, but has anyone found any issues with the Deck Stepped Version? We are not planning any serious offshore work, just coastal cruising in Southern California. That said, we have young kids, so safety is a major priority

Thanks again!

Main Message Board / Silly Question from perspective owner
September 06, 2016, 03:06:01 PM
Hi  everyone. My wife and I are currently searching for the right C-34 for us here in Southern California. We are both longtime dinghy racers (and I sail professionally still). My silly question is has anyone ever converted a Catalina 34 to a tiller? I know they are well balanced as is, and we are looking at the Mark 1's which already have the top of the rudder post in the cockpit. It seems like it would make for more space in the cockpit and we are both more comfortable with tiller steering.

Just curious if anyone has done this or what.
