I've attached a cruising guide for the NC coastal waters.  The guide is pretty good, but it was put together back in 2009.  Should give you a good idea how to head north from Oriental.  v/r Adam

Exhaust soot, but no mention of exhaust odor.....perhaps the soot is belt dust?  I believe a misaligned alternator belt can create quite a mess.  Mine sure did!!!

Truth is...when I read your comment in the critical upgrades, I had no idea what "gossots" on engine mounts were.

Many thanks to this site and the fantastic contributors.  I have done several projects all very successful thanks to this site.  I purchased my boat in Aug. 2011.  Had it surveyed etc. never noticed that both of the front side mounts were completely severed, until last weekend.      

I have an M-35.  I see how to replace the mounts, but was wondering if anyone has any lessons learned on replacing the metal mounts, if so I would appreciate them.

Also, I'm concerned about how they fatigued in the first place.  Vibrations? That metal is thick!  What else do I need to check/replace, besides the mounts?  I have a dripless stuffing box.  Once I replace the mounts I figure I'll need to check the shaft, but not sure how. 

ps hope the picture shows the break clearly.  Both sides are broken, only the rear mounts are holding the engine.

Great batteries!!!  I had Optima batteries for years..on my power boat.  However, I didn't find the benefits to be worth the $s.  I went the golf cart battery route.   v/r Adam

I have a Xantrex Truecharge40+ still in the box from the PO.  He said he just never got around to installing it.  I was planning to install it since this unit was made in 2009, but it sounds like I'll be looking for trouble.  I assume I'd be better of installing a more preferred charger.  Am I being too cautious? Adam

     Did you have any other seacocks opened?  Can't imagine that you can pump water out the exhaust, with every source of water closed.  If your certain that the engine seacocks was closed before the strainer, then another hose is connected past the strainer. 

I know it's a reach, but that would explain why you didn't overheat, & why you still have AF in the strainer.  v/r Adam
