For winter cover.
I would not suggest tarp over stanchion.  This put side force on them, and not good.
You can leave boom on, but attach it on both side of boat to stop it from swigning sideways all winter.

I put a 2x4 from top of cabin to pedestial, and another one from pedestial to back of boat.
Then put a tarp to cover from back of mast to back of boat.
Use stanchions to fix tarp.
And for best result, run a rope over the tarp in zigzag patern on it whole lenght.  Wind will go under tarp and will rip it.  This rope will prevent this to happen.

I always err on the side of safety so I think you made a good call but rather than shipping your boat by truck wouldn't it have been easier and cheaper to hire a qualified skipper and have him deliver the boat? You could have also crewed for him and learned a lot about your boat along the way.

Yes it would have been a nice trip.
But,  it was faster on a truck 😊

When we bought our boat, it was located in the long island area, NY.
And wanted the boat on lake champlain, NY.
We could have sailed it up north, but was not confortable with a new boat to us that we did not know well.

So I got a specialized boat transport company.  Glad I did.  The boat was very well secured on the truck.
Mast well transported.
As mentioned, the boat width need special permit.
Most important thing for me, is that they have proper insurance if something had to happen.

Why not take some empty cardboard box, tape.
On Ronco web site, they  give tank dimensions.
Make a full size mokeup and try to make sure you can get the tank in  place.

Gave them the original model no.  And gave them location of holes reqiired.

I also remade our cabin floor.
Sanding must be done very carefully, cause the holly finish is extremely thin.

I used home type hardwood varnish.  Use the oil based one.  Not the water based.

When we bought our boat.  We made an offer and made it conditional to a survey made by a prfessional surveyor that we would choose.
And if you can, get an amount kept in an escrow account by the broker until you get property of the boat.   
For our experience, we bought the boat far from our home,   we went to check the boat and it was to our needs.
Made an offer and we agreed to a price.   I went back for the survey.  And came as a good boat.
Arrange for the boat to be transported by truck close to home.  To find out that the previous owner went back on the boat and remove equipments.  Such as the VHF which was a brand new with remote mic at helm.

I took mine of and lite sanded one side.
Painted them on this side.  We went with a sunny yellow.
Enlarged and brightened the salon.

When want to go back to original panel, remove and flip them.

Is your cover is a full boat length or just aft mast version.

What was the temperature like.  Humidity inside the boat from nice sunny day and cold night will creat a lot of water inside the hull.

Mast keel step will bring a lot of water in the bilge during a storm.  I did remove floor panel and sat down and check water flowing continuous at base of mast.

One thing you could do during storage on the hard is to remove depth sounder.  Water will have a way to go and not accumulate in bilge and could destroy floor.  Install a screen to prevent intruders.

I had mine redone by a local shop near platsburg, ny.
It was sunbrella material. Sunbrella make interior material.  Not same as used for dodger.
It is expensive, but it is also very tough.  Water proof.
We went with a lite grey tone.
Worth the expense.

I know a couple who sailed their 89 Cat34 from montreal, quebec, canada all the way to the Martinique island.
They spent the first winter in the bahamas, and sailed slowly (like if you could go fast) down south after that.
And they made it back after 4 years of sailing.

But I know that it is not ocean crossing.
