Here is the shot of my damper plate.  Not much left of the teeth.  I am now thinking the transmission is OK.   I  hope to change out the damper plate without removing the bell housing.  I have the aftermarket replacement on order from Catalina Direct.

I am back in port now after a few days on the lake with our annual guy cruise (on a Catalina 355).

Looking at the damper plate it looks like the grooves are pretty worn down and stripped.  There are a lot of metal shavings in the bottom of the bell housing.

I am going to order a new damper plate. It is the elastomer one that is part Z417.  Any one know the best p;ace to get one quickly?

Our mechanic at the club thinks the tranny is OK.  No end play in bearings and it seem to be working when tested by hand.

Any tips on removing the damper plate?  I am hoping I ca do this without removing the bell housing.  Is that possible?

Thanks

Thanks Ron.  I think you are right.  It just looks like a flat plate.  So I am convinced the transmission is the problem.

Thanks guys for your input.  Dave, I really enjoyed sailing Railin and winning many races with her.

Re the transmission.  I am in a bit of a quandary.  I have spoken to Pete at Anthony Keats Marine and he had suggested that because I had a noise in both forward and reverse that it might be the damper plate and not the trans.

However, my symptom was that I had no nose in neutral even at high rpm, but when I shifted into either forward or reverse, at low rpm, there was a grinding noise and no propulsion.  Even when I disconnected the prop shaft, this was still the case.

I understand that when the engine is running, the input shaft to the trans is rotating, so iF the problem was the damper plate, would I have not heard the noise even in neutral, especially at high rpm?

The fact that there was no noise in neutral yet noise in forward and reverse makes me think it is definitely the trans.

My next step is to bench test the trans my rotating input shaft and seeing if I can replicate the noise.

How can I determine the integrity of the damper plate now that the trans is out?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks for the info.  I will call Anthony Keats Mariine.   Not sure if they will be open on Labour day, but definitely Tuesday.

Thanks for your replies.  I did get the tranny out.  Had to lift the back of the engine to get clear of the drive shaft coupling as it would only go back 3/4 inch.   A mechanic at the club is looking at a rebuild.  The replacement tranny ZF 10M is $3500 from Catalina Direct. Anyone know of  cheaper source? :clap

My 2002 C34 Mk 2 transmission has just failed.  Grinding noise when I try forward or reverse.  Prop shaft rotates by hand. Do I need to remove the engine to replace tranny?  :cry4`

Thanks for the come back.  My son lives in Tennessee and I would be willing to pay for the shipping there and whatever it costs you to pack it up.

Does anyone know the exact dimensions of a 155 genoa for a 2002 MK II tall rig with Shaeffer Furling?

I have bought a C34 and am looking to buy a light air genoa.

Where would I get such info?  I know the forestay length is 46' 2.5", but not sure how much to subtract for the furling drum & head to get the luff dimension.
