Main Message Board / M35B - Kubota parts
May 27, 2015, 08:24:40 AM
I have just completed an overhaul of my M35B engine (2000 C34) and transmission, during the course of which I replaced the head gasket.  After much work, I obtained Kubota parts.  Here is the information I collected:

From the engine block:
    Capacity 1.335liters
    V1305 D
    Serial number V1305-XN8193

Kubota part numbers:
    Head gasket 1629203310KUB ($53.87)
    Blue cylinder head O ring. 1522133700KUB ($2.38)
Injector nozzle and holder. 1051481350ZXL ($68.75)
Heat seal for nozzles. 1907753650KUB ($18.69)
    Head cover gasket. 1624114520KUB ($9.99)

I was not able to confirm that the M35B is used in the B2710 tractor (per the C36 site) but the specs on the engine in this tractor seem to match the M35B.  No guarantees are offered that the above part numbers are right for any other M35B, but they seem to fit mine!

FYI, I had the four existing injectors dismantled, cleaned and tested ($76). All were in good shape.  I am planning a lengthy trip so I bought one spare injector - the only one in the USA I was told!
The gearbox was noisy and leaking at the rear seal.  I removed it with a view to rebuilding at some stage but in the meantime I put in a new ZF10 without problem.  I also replaced the damper plate (Express Marine part number 3306316003 I think) and put in a flexible coupling from Henry Smith.
Hope this is helpful to others.

Thank you for the input.  The new torque wrench arrives tomorrow so I will try retorque first.

Reading the service manual I see that there is a reference to an O ring in conjunction with the head gasket.  I have not seen this configuration before.  I wonder if I should get a new O ring as well as a gasket - if I eventually need to replace the gasket.  Any thoughts?

Main Message Board / M35b head gasket replacement

AJAY is a 2000 mk II with an M35b.  Generally reliable, no starting problems, no overheating problems but a little more vibration than I would like from the engine/drive train when under medium to heavy load.
I have now noticed a weep of coolant at higher revs only(>2500) which seems to be coming from the interface of the head and the block, aft starboard corner.  No sign of coolant in the lube oil- yet, but I assume the head gasket is leaking and is in need of replacing. No evidence of head bolt movement on the paint.  I have not tried additional tightening.  I thought about doing a breakaway torque measurement and possibly re torquing but this is full of uncertainty, so replacing the head gasket seems the best course.  I don't want to tighten bolts, think I have solved the problem and generate bigger problems down the line.  But, perhaps I have missed something and all input would be gratefully received.

I have done a search on replacing the head gasket and I think it is something I can reasonably expect to do but all help on the following would be appreciated:

Best supplier for head gasket kit.  Kubota part numbers, or take out a mortgage and go to the marine suppliers?
Additional items needed (liquid gasket etc).  There is always something, and Home Depot don't stock it.
The likely problems in disassembly and tips for dealing with same
Ditto on reassembly
The unexpected thing that usually comes up to bite us in jobs like this - there is always at least one.
What else should I take care of while I am stripping the engine to this degree.  Thinking PM here and exhaust system perhaps?

I did wonder if the head was warped.  The PO had not dealt with the cam shaft/water pump connection problem, failure occurred and I had the head taken off and that issue dealt with about 6 years ago by a local mechanic.  Perhaps the bolts were not torqued in the right sequence or to the right force in the rebuild, but that does seem a long time for the problem to manifest itself.  Again, any thoughts would be welcomed.  Not sure how I can check this.  It may be just a case of replace the head gasket and see if it fails again.  But, I suppose 6 years is not too bad!

Lance,
Engine raw water intake, AC water intake and cockpit salt water wash down connection (as it was before we moved to the lake!)

I have had five boats over my sailing career of 40 plus years, both in UK and USA.  Never had an insurer ask for a survey before providing insurance.  But, never had a claim either!

Stu
The system consists of a number of transmitters stuck on the inside of the hull and that emit a low frequency sonic pulse every few seconds.  The vibration is transmitted through the hull and apparently discourages marine organisms from attaching themselves to the exterior.
I have to turn it off at night, the constant "chirping" does not encourage a restful night!
I will try it out over the next few weeks and see how it performs.  I will also measure the current draw.

Thanks Paul.  I had previously googled it and had a look at the various references, but they are mainly from vendors.  I was trying to find some independent views.

Main Message Board / Barnaclean system

I have a 2000 C34 mk11 based in Panama City FL.  The PO had a Barnaclean system installed.  I searched on this site for Barnaclean but got no hits.  Does anyone have any experience with the Barnaclean system?  I was not sure how effective it might be and what sort odf current draw it might impose on the batteries.  Any thoughts?
