Main Message Board / Wiring in mast
February 08, 2005, 08:17:58 PM
I need to install a coax wire in my mast as well as the wind indicator cable . Any ideas as how to install these wires while the mast is stepped so that I don't get the noise from these wires hitting the mast.

Main Message Board / Instrument Recommendations

I too am in need of replacing my instruments and am about to order an instrument package from Simrad. In order to minimize on size I will get the depth / speed combi and wind instrument.
I hope I can use my existing original round pods.

Main Message Board / Charging Dead Batteries

Mike, Last year after purchasing Eliosso, did a major electrical refit including a Truecharge  40. After looking at several configuration with my electrician, we agreed to install it on the starboard side  forward of the water tank close to the bulkhead under the seat upside down. This way , we were using space that otherwise would not be used. We glued a piece of plywood under the seat to be able to secure it . Am very pleased with this installation. The inverter, XANTEX 1000  was installed sideways on the inside of the starboard compartment  under the settee. There is a remote on / off switch at the nav table. A plug was connected to the inverter to 2 strategically located dedicated outlets, one in the galley and one at the nav table. Great to feed the toaster and microwave and the other for whatever.
Of course , all the proper fuses were installed as per instructions by Jim Moe . I had posted these instructions  a while back ago on this site .
Good luck

Main Message Board / New Boat Bottom Prep
January 16, 2005, 07:56:57 PM
when I bought my 1989 C34 last year, it had no anti fouling on the hull,. It never did as it always sailed on lake George and the hull was like new. I too though of putting a barrier coat so I call catalina and they said it was not worth it as it already had a protective coating. Here on lake Champlain , there is no need for anti fouling either and the hull is still just like new after a pressure cleaning at haul out

Main Message Board / surveyor at fault? HELP!
January 16, 2005, 06:02:37 PM
As a surveyor , my job is to point out the detectable deficiencies and also to bring up the possibilities ,if any ,of a greater problem such as in this case . Obvious blisters and previous repaired blisters. There seem to be a history of blistering. He should have recommended to further investigate the hull by a specialist in fiberglass and in the proper  conditions that is letting the hull dry out r come back himself in a couple of weeks. This way you could have had a second opinion before finalizing the transaction and saving you the headache or having the price reduced accordingly.
Its a problem with rushed surveys, that is surveys done in less than good conditions. How the hell am I to make a proper assessment about moisture content in a hull that's just out of the water.
I've even had to grind the paint because of a high moisture reading after the boat had been out of the water for 2 weeks.

Main Message Board / Instrument housing pod

I did look at Lay line but too bloody expensive. Simrad instruments @ $1186.00 versus $2300.00 for wireless.
Numbers speak for them-self !!!!!!

Main Message Board / Instrument housing pod

I am in need of replacing my instruments. My choice are the Simrad IS12 instruments, combi (depth / speed) and a wind system.Similar in size as the Raymarine units. Will the new instruments fit the original housing pods or do I need  to get new rail mount swivel pods. I do not want  to have the instruments right in front of my face as do the new grab rail installed systems do. I find that they interfere with visibility in a seated position.

Main Message Board / Tsunami

I am sorry to announce that the pictures that were posted are not from the December 24th Tsunami but from another tsunami. This is a hoax that has been circulating and I like you got taken.
However, I think that it still gave us a good idea of how devastating it can be. Below is a site that confirms this.

Bob, congratulations on your ramp, looks great.
What kind of wood did you use for the platform. Dinghy, my dog, would probably be very happy to have one.

Mike, I used the regular marine Cetol  and with the color of my mahogany, it is very close to my teak, at least close enough.
I to have a MK1, 1989. Because of the weather up here  I have a full enclosure so the sole will not get much weather wear.
After  making templates, from the plan, go to the boat set them in and use cardboard strips to fill voids where needed and then staple them to the template. Make your jig according to those adjusted templates.

Mike ,
the plans provided by Dan Harrington are exceptionally well done but of course, based on my nature , I had to make modifications. I made a tighter fit around the pedestal and being on a lake with bimini and full enclosure , I did not make the same scupper cut out for the drainage which will not diminish the drainage anyway.
I had the wood cut and planed by a shop as it was too big for my equipment . I would recommend using lumber from the same piece of wood as color can vary from one piece to another. For the finish, I opted for Cetol, 6 coats
Looks great , cant wait to get it out off my office floor
