Main Message Board / Instruments installation
April 25, 2005, 09:15:08 PM
Just ordered new instruments Simrad Cruise Pack for Eliosso.
Am thinking of different possibilities for the installation. Have 3 instruments to install.
Option 1) replace grab bar and install triple pod on higher 54" grab bar
Option 2) Install on a piece of teak just under the companionway step
Option 3) Install under the dodger above sliding hatch ( I like that one)   in a triple pod
Has anybody tried option 2 or 3 or any other configuration, would like pros and cons and any other brilliant ideas you might come up with

I had my dodger and full enclosure made last year and did alot of research to come up with what works great for me. The dodger side and aft grab bar, lots of windows, opening center window and removable side window. Can also zip in a screen in place of the center window for air without the bugs.. I really like the light grey also called silver color.

Main Message Board / New Roller furler

At first, I had a hell of a time with my furler but after a thorough cleaning it works fine . I have not had a problem with reefing the genoa under tension. Last time I was out , we had 30+ knts winds average and of course had the genoa reefed with no problem.  My question is , what kind of problems are you having with reefing the fore sail ??

Main Message Board / Question about boat value
March 16, 2005, 04:48:53 AM
Boat value is can a very tricky delicate number to come up with. We all like to think that our boats are worth a lot considering the money we spend on them and have a hard time accepting the high depreciation that seems to hit them. Several tools must be used to come up with a fair value such as BUC, NADA, Yachtworld and local markets.
Of  course year is one but also general condition, equipment and upgrade, fresh or salt water and geographic location.
Value might be somewhat different in the eyes of the seller, but the bottom line is what the market will bear. A boat might be worth 55K, expenses to see the boat and the shipping cost might be 4K, so someone might be willing to pay 59K locally although the boat is only really worth 55K.
Here in Quebec,Canada, we have a problem. a lot of boat owner who ave boats sail on lake Champlain which is in the US Their boats are Canadian documented but in bond, (15% sales tax is not paid neither is duty in some case if applicable).  Some, who sail inland or on Canadian waters, and have paid taxes when selling their boats, consider the sale tax, if paid, in the value of their boats. Taxes do not affect the value of a boat, paid or not.
Another problem , north of the border is the appreciation of our currency. Not long ago,2, 3 years, a 1.00 US was worth as much as 1.55 Can. If someone bought a 59K us boat in the US, it cost him 91.k can plus 15% sales tax. Considering the same transaction today at the current rate, 1.20, the cost is about 71K
A seller will have a hard time accepting this devaluation on top of any depreciation. He has , technically, lost 20K just because of currency fluctuation.
When I bought Eliosso, asking price in the US was 50Kus for an 89, but here in Quebec , one guy was asking 90Kcan (64kus) and our Canadian book value guide had valued the boat at 90kcan. So here north of the border, we have to take the exchange rate into consideration.
Not as easy as it might appear.

-----There is another type of foam called DRY FOAM. It does not hold water at all so you can leave them out but need to have a mesh on the under side so water , if any can quickly escape.
It is sold by National Foam in  Davie, Florida
http://www.nationalfoamproducts.com/
I happen to have a full set of foam cushion ( foam only )  used 3 months
for a 89 mkI
I find the a little on the soft side so my wife made me change them for regular foam. We don't need this feature as we now have a full enclosure

Stu , Thank you for the quick response.
I would like to add that I followed Jim's electrical plan as he had originally prepared it for me. It has worked great with no problems. I strongly recommend it.

Main Message Board / A/C Install Question

I had a Mermaid 5000 for 4 years  on another boat while living aboard. Had to replace the pump only once. You just need to make sure it is primed by removing the outlet hose leaving water come out and reinstalling the hose. Good luck

Looking at the specs of the Truechage 40, it is written that the typical AC input current @ 120V 1s 8.5Ams
The Specs for the Honda EU1000i is 8.3 amps max.  and 16.7 Max for the EU2000i.
I guess that the numbers speak for themselves. Am still curious how someone is able to run a 40 charger with the 1000i model based on these numbers.
Question.: What is the maximum vertical clearance in the port locker, would it fit there?  I would need 16.7" that seems good place to store it and easily removable for easy access. If not, I guess the lazarette locker would be the only space available without keeping it inside the boat which I don't want to do.
Can anyone with a MK! take a measurement for me  ?

Thank you

Am considering a Honda generator to feed my Statpower 45+. Will the Honda 1000 watts be sufficient or do I need the 2000 watts. I prefer the smaller unit only for its size and ease of storage. For those owning a MK!, where do you store your generator 2 kw when not in use. I don't see a problem with the 1KW
Thank you

Main Message Board / Vinyl flooring in galley
February 21, 2005, 06:12:27 PM
Mondo flooring was the product from Italy that was used at the Olympic Stadium in 1984. Great product.
The product you are referring to looks just like it. As a mater of fact I bought a piece that was used in the puppy den so the floor would not be damaged. I now have it in my garage and just noticed it today, hell I walk over it every day for the last 4 years. I bought it at home depot in the carpet dept., it is used as a runner for either corridors or stairs i guess. It is not as thick as the original product which did not curl but this piece I have does have a slight curl to it but it was never glued.  I imagine that contact glue would work great but it is permanent. I do believe that this product should remain in good shape for the life of the boat.
