Main Message Board / Horn Installation
December 30, 2007, 08:10:29 AM
I am looking to install a horn system on the boat with the intention of integrating it with the FogMate Horn controller, http://www.fogmate.com/.  I would be interested in knowing if anyone has installed a simple horn system on your boat, which horn/switch did you select and where did you locate them on your boat.

Main Message Board / Flag Etiquette
December 26, 2007, 03:06:58 PM
The USPS states that you should not display more than one burgee at a time on the starboard spreader.  This is where I generally fly my yacht club burgee.  I often see sail boats flying a second burgee on their starboard spreader generally representing a sailing fleet they participate in.  Most of what I read tells me this is not proper etiquette; however, this is not 100% clear in some of my readings.

Let me know what you think, can this be considered accepted practice?

Main Message Board / Galley Faucet
December 22, 2007, 06:55:20 AM
I am looking to replace my galley faucet with a single lever faucet similar to the one that came standard in the C36.  I was told the replacement needs to be a marine faucet because the diameter is smaller than a standard household faucet.  Catalina direct has the C36 faucet, but is it expensive at over $250.  Does anyone have experience with this upgrade, I would love to hear which brand you used in the replacement and where you purchased it?

Also is it really true that there is a difference in a household faucet and the marine version?

Main Message Board / Transmission Fluid
November 24, 2007, 04:47:57 PM
My C34 MKII has a HBW 150 transmission; the operator's manual tells me the sump capacity is .59 U.S. qts.  This year for some reason I took the time to measure the amount of fluid I pulled from the transmission and the amount it took to refill the unit.  .59 qts. = 18.88 ounces.  For some reason the transmission only took 6 ounces to bring the unit full.  Puzzled at this point I emptied the transmission a second time and again refilled the unit with again the same results.

I can not explain this, the boat is on dry land, and it does seem to be sitting fairly level.  Has anyone ran into this or have an explanation?

Main Message Board / Headmate 1460 Marine Toilet
August 20, 2007, 05:21:51 PM
I have a 25 gallon holding tank with this unit, does anyone know how many flushes in general it would take to fill this holding tank.  We try our best to keep the pumps used each time to 3 or 4, for some reason the tank seems to fill quickly.  I plan to eventually install a monitoring system to help me gauge how full the tank is, until then I need to estimate this to ensure it does not over flow.

I have to place my documentation number on by boat.  The instructions say must be on some clearly visable interior structural part of the hull.  I have been reading through old posts and understand the options sailors have used to mount the number.  What I am not clear on is this, most have placed the number in a non visable area like storage compartment.  In this case a door might have to be opened or cushion removed to actually see the number.  Personally I do not want the number to be seen and would prefer mounting in a sail locker or or in a hatch somewhere, however, I am not sure it will meet the coast guard instruction of "clearly visable".  Can someone help me with this My inspection is due next week.

Thanks in advance.

Main Message Board / Refrigerator question
January 21, 2007, 06:38:28 AM
I am almost embarrassed to ask this question, however, for the last 12 years I have sailed from a mooring and did not have many of the luxuries boating from a dock would provide.  One of the luxuries would be electric power.  This season, for the first time, my boat will move from a mooring to a dock where I plan to spend most of my weekends.  My question is would it be ok to leave the refrigerator turned on during the week knowing that when I leave the boat on a Sunday night I will be returning on a Friday night?

Main Message Board / Throttle Creep
June 27, 2006, 04:51:35 AM
The throttle on my C34 has been difficult to move in either direction.  I found a cable clamp midway in the run of the cable crimping it causing this problem, unfortunately, without the clamp the throttle slowly creeps back to neutral.

I now see why this was done, but I can not believe this is the fix.  Does the flexibility of the cable support too much flexibility in the run to the engine which creates a "springy" control such that it returns to neutral as mine does?  Is this the preferred remedy?

Main Message Board / GFO Fiber packing
June 26, 2006, 05:25:46 PM
I was reading in Mainsheet that this dripless packing works well.  I have a fairly steady drip I would like to eliminate.  Does this stuff really work, is there any downside?

Main Message Board / Tachometer
June 07, 2006, 07:42:30 AM
I have a M-35B in a Catalina 34 and The tachometer is not functioning correctly.  Here is the status of my troubleshooting and I would appreciate your advice:

- Wire to SEND terminal on Tach to Alt  = good 0 ohms no ground.
- Voltage at the Send Terminal on the tach with engine running and connected to alt = 8.3 V
- When Key is turned on the tach responds slightly to say 800 rpm.  Upon start gage needle immediately travels fully clockwise to what  appears to be a hard stop.
- Voltage at IGN and GND on tachometer is battery voltage.
- Battery charging 14V full batteries when running
- No tampering with the calibration settings has been made – paint marks from factory intact.

All looks fine with the wiring – 3 year old boat – no corrosion at all.

My diagnosis is the tach is bad – am I right?  Is there something else to check out?

Main Message Board / Depth Offset C34 MK II
May 29, 2006, 04:43:16 PM
I am looking for the approximate offset between the transducer and the bottom of a wing keel.  I have been using -4.3, however, this is obviously wrong because I seem to be plowing through the mud at low tide in certain areas of the channel which leads to my mooring area.  I assume with most C34 MII's the Depth transducers are in the same area.  Would anyone have this handy?

I am a new owner of a C34 and have a question on using the AC appliances while not connected to shore power.  I assumed this boat came with a DC to AC power inverter, since my boat is on a mooring this is important.  It looks like I assumed wrong.  Has anyone added one to their system and could you share the size you bought, where you installed it and some info on where you wired it in?

In preparing my boat for this season (which is my first with an inboard) The shaft and propeller on this boat had many barnacles.  I cleaned this area well, however, I am trying to figure out why I would not paint it with the ablative bottom paint I use on the bottom of the boat.  Is there any reason I should not do this?

Main Message Board / Mooring Ball placement
April 11, 2006, 07:28:01 PM
I am trying to set my mooring lines as a new owner of a c34 MKII.  I need the following information to complete my measurements, unfortunately, my boat is 2 hours away and the moorings are scheduled to be installed the end of this week.  If anyone could help I would appreciate it

Distance from bow cleat to water line
Distance of bow cleat to bow
Distance of stern cleat to water line
Distance of stern cleat to stern

Thanks for any help you can lend.

Main Message Board / Bottom Paint
March 09, 2006, 01:58:57 PM
Can someone tell me how much paint it takes to apply one coat?  My plan is to apply 3 coats all together one probably red and the next two blue.  It would be helpfull if I can buy the right amount of paint while it is on sale.
