Main Message Board / Largest dinghy towed
February 10, 2017, 07:45:11 AM
What is the largest dinghy that anyone has towed with a 34?

I have a 13' Boston Whaler with a 40 hp outboard that I would like to try towing for weekends on the bay not long distance cruising but say 20 miles at most.

Does anyone see any problems towing a boat of this size?

Main Message Board / Engine overheating
November 05, 2011, 05:50:31 AM
I just replaced my circulation pump because the bearings had gone bad.  While I was at it I replaced a couple of the hoses, changed the zinc in the heat exchanger.  I also checked the impeller (was okay).  I put everything back together with new gaskets, painted the engine and added more coolant.

Then started the engine and it overheated.  Everything looks okay, no leaks, I topped the coolant off again and tried again, but the engine overheated again.

Any suggestions on what to try next?

Main Message Board / Lewmar Ports
October 10, 2011, 05:53:49 AM
Guys, I have been through several old threads regarding leaking Lewmar ports, but still have questions, so here it goes.

I have the Lewmar size one opening ports in the Salon and v-berth.  A couple of them were leaking and I was getting some water on the nav station.  I replaced ALL the gaskets last week and have previously replaced several of the "dog latches" and seals.

Yesterday we had a really good rainfall and nearly all the hatches are leaking, but appear to be leaking from within the frame.  I am about at my wits end here.  Do I need to pull every hatch and rebed them or is there an easier solution to attempt first, maybe a bead of silicone around the outside trim?

I am sure someone else has experienced this, please help!

Thanks!

Main Message Board / I've got crabs
May 17, 2011, 05:21:33 AM
well, one anyway....  We just completed a three week cruise of the TX ICW and a couple of days ago I found a small crab in my bilge.

I am perplexed as to how it got there.  The only possible explanation I can think of is that it must have crawled up the hose for the manual bilge.

Has anyone else had this experience or an explanation as to how the heck it got there?

Main Message Board / Galvanic Isolator installation
January 10, 2011, 07:19:50 AM
So this past weekend one of my projects was going to be the installation of a galvanic isolator.

I have decided to mount it behind the panel in the green wire before the bus bar.  Reason being that my air conditioner compressor is in the cockpit locker and I have no access the the rear of the AC inlet without tearing out and replacing a lot of insulation.

Question:  In looking at the schematics I do not see a ground to the engine from the AC system.  I assume that the bus bar is grounded to the engine, but was unable to trace the wire.  Is this correct?  Would I be safe to mount the isolator behind the panel or is there a ground between the shore power inlet and the panel?

My zincs seem to only last about three to four months.  On my old boat located in the same marina they seemed to last at least 6-8 months.  I hope that the isolator will extend my zinc life.

Main Message Board / Shore power cord
July 06, 2010, 08:01:48 AM
I searched the archives, but was unable to find this problem mentioned.  I apologize if this has been covered already.

The end of my shore power chord appears burned where it connects to the boat.  I noticed a slight brown mark a couple of weeks ago, but it now appears worse. It is just around one of the prongs.  I also observed that the end was warm to the touch.    I checked to make sure that both ends of the cord were securely fastened.  I left everything turned off when I left the boat.

I did not want to buy a new shore power cord only to have the same problem any ideas?
