Lake Michigan / Re: Great Lakes Roll Call

Respite 1996 Catalina 34 MKII we winter in Muskegon MI but spend the summer in The North Channel (The north side of Lake Huron) in Canada - and on Georgian Bay. Typically spend 75-110 days cruising each summer.

I have lost 12-volt power to the over head light in the head. Unfortunately the wiring appears to have been done before the deck was put on the boat and I can't trace it nor can I find a path to run a new wire to the light.

Look for ideas besides replacing the light with a battery powered one.

Thanks

Thanks all. All good information. I have changed the GFI, taken everything connected to the GFI off the circuit, checked all the connections including the connection to the boat, but haven't checked the entire length of the main cable coming from the boat to shore connection to the distribution center on the boat. That will be my next step in the spring once the boat is uncovered.

I have replaced the GFI. taken everything off the system after the GFI, checked all the other connections and wires and still when something is plugged into the GFI it pops. There in lies the issue. I know it iw trying to tell me something but what I can't figure out.

Thanks Robert. I bought the rudder sensor 3 years ago but couldn't for the life of me see how to mount it. Now I have your PDF and I'll get at it as soon as the cover comes off.

Main Message Board / GFI not installed

My 1996 doesn't have a GFI on the AC system. Previous owner removed GFI as it kept going off. I have checked the entire AC system, all appears to be properly wired and ground. Yet when I put the GFI back in, it goes off.

Suggestions?

I would grind it out a little so you have a clean surface to bond to and then use West System GFlex epoxy to fill it in. I have repaired several CAtalina smiles that way and it almost never returns.

Thanks to all. Yes i run the engine. My oil plug is in the middle of the oil pan. I do understand that the engine in mounted on an angle. Still when changing the oil I would hope to at least have clean oil show on the dipstick after it is changed and before I run the engine 8)

I change the oil regularly on my 1996 M35 Universal but can't seem to get all the oil out when I change it. I can get 2.5 - 3 quarts out regardless of whether the boat is on the hard or in the water yet the engine should hold 4-5 quarts according to the manual. I have taken the oil out from the hose on the bottom of the oil pan and tried sucking it out of the dipstick and still when I put new oil in it is jet black as if I didn't change it.

My mechanic says that yeo this is a problem with this engine but has no answer.

We have owned a 1996 34 MKII with a wing keel for a year and sailing on Lake Michigan in high winds and waves has been a dream. It doesn't point quite as well as our old Catalina 30 but with the right amount of sail for the winds the boat does just fine.

Main Message Board / Deck-stepped mast leaks

The mast on my 1996 34MKII has developed a leak. The water is running down the sides of the metal compression post.
It there a "quick fix" that I can do this summer to abate the issue then pull the mast in the fall?
