The heat insulation around my Universal 25 is breaking down and getting pretty messy. I pulled all of the old insulation out and now ready to reinstall. Does anyone have any recommendations as to what type or brand to use? What characteristics should I look for. Any other feedback?
I just did this job and after some research, I used the Soundown Foam Panel 1"thkX32"Wx54"L from Defender (Item#301134) about $78.
This will be enough to do the entire enclosure, plus the inside of both access doors but not enough to do the underside of slide on cover.
I re-used the existing washers and screws and used no adhesive. This is a very dense and heavy foil backed foam and can easily be cut to your specific sizes. I used my old insulation as a template to cut the new material.
For the underside of the slide on cover I used 1/2"thk adhesive backed foil insulation foam available at auto part stores.
Steve : if you look in WiKi, Projects or Mainsheet tech notes - you'll find that I wrote an article with pictures on replacing that sound proofing/insulation!! Think I suggested using 1 1/4" from Defender.
What I may not have said was that it is best way to cut it to size (use the old for a pattern if you can) is that it is easily clean cut with a band saw.
It makes a lot of sense to remove the crumbling insulation. If the engine intake filter hasn't been upgraded that crap can easily get sucked into the engine.
Every vendor sells a 1" insulation which is made up of two layers of foam separated by a plastic/metal layer in between. It is much heavier than the plain all foam ones and seams to be a better solution.
I have a decibel meter but forgot too take before and after readings so Its all just an opinion.
Thank you all for your suggestions. I will be purchasing the 1" material from Defender.
BTW: I did search on line but ciuldn't find anything. Im
am on my tablet and so could not search the CD. I will check Ron's article before I install.
