Title: Engine quits in reverse
Post by: karista on November 25, 2001, 12:41:55 PM
My universal M25XP which has 900 hours on it, recently has started to stall when I put her in reverse to slow down the boat, such as entering the dock. The engine otherwise runs fine, does not stall out in forward, just when put in reverse from forward. ANY IDEAS AS TO CAUSE/FIX?

Ron
I have the standard 3-blade prop, engine is running normal in forward, idle speed is at 600 RPM, nothing has changed, except now she stalls out when switching into reverse. I have been advised by Westerbeke Service that the idle speed should be set at 1000 RPM, this seems high to me.

you might just try jumping over the side...throw on a mask and make sure your prop is clear. It's possible that when running in forward, the the line, kelp or other, is trailing - but when running in reverse, the line, kelp or other, binds against the strut.
