I've been working on this little project for several weeks, pretty happy with the design but still consulting with the fabricator I'm working with. Building the bowsprit for my new gennaker and possibly a code 0 down the road, I already have the Harken Reflex furler and the sail should be here in a couple of months. There's a few elements that aren't pictured in the design but I'll update once I get some more work done. I'll be using 316 stainless to the construction.
Feedback is welcome!
I dig it!!
Bobstay?
There's provisions already for me to run a bob stay if I need it, I don't actually think I'll need on based on the design of the bowsprit itself. It only extends 20" past the bow of the boat and there's a ton of reinforcements in multiple directions. I installed a U-bolt about 4" above the waterline when I was on the hard last winter season in anticipation of this project so I can always run a dyneema bob stay.
"ramming speed"!
I would suggest you make a foam or wood template, to size, and fit it to the boat—to make sure you have a fair lead to your windlass, at the correct angle(s). Also make sure you have enough clearance aloft on between your spinnaker crane and genoa furler, so you don't have any issues with furling your gennaker with your top-down system. I had some issues to address with my Selden Gx furler (on a removable sprit/pole), interfering with my Profurl wrap-stop device.
Will there be any holes or openings in the horizontal surface besides the anchor roller?
How does this work with the stemhead fitting?
I believe this replaces the stem fitting entirely, but not for certain.
Alex is correct, the original stemhead is replaced with the new bowsprit. You can kinda see it in the view from underneath, it is just not finished in the model, I need to measure the original on so that I can properly represent it in this model. The original stemhead had a crack in it, similar to the ones that are in pictures on Catalina direct's website.
Also at the forward end of the bowsprit there will be a single SS loop for attaching the tack line, my reflex furler was ordered with a 2:1 attachment for adjusting the tack height.
I just really read this thread. I did not understand what you were up to. Now I do and what a great idea! I did not know that they made a furler for a spinnaker. It seems like a great idea. If someone else has one already rigged with original bowsprit I would love to see some pictures. Logo you do very nice work, love following your threads.
Glenn- this is what I have and a few others on this Forum and C36 Forum. I have still a "kink or two" to work out before I can give an honest report. I have only flown it at the dock so far :?

I saw that but wasn't sure if it was welded to the bow sprit or it passed thru it. It's welded then?
No holes in the horizontal surface?

A Code Zero requires a very stiff luff with lots of tension and a very big load on the halyard/sprit. It would be wise to have a bobstay

If and when I get a code 0 then everything is in place for me to run a bobstay.
First few pieces back from forming. Slow progress but in the right direction! Top plate and new stem :clap
Ohhhhhh yeah!!! Dig it!
Nice work, thx for keeping us posted.
Thank you! Although I won't take the credit as I'm not the one doing the fabricating. Even though I have my fair share of input towards the project it is a very talented fabricator doing the work for me. I will keep updating you guys as more pieces get added.
Here is the "bowsprit" I made for my top down furler. I did put a bobstay. Called CY and spoke to Jim McNamara. Sent him the drawings and he said it looked like it would be acceptable. I've cranked the furler torsion line bar tight, which you need to do in order to have it furl correctly. I have a Bamar EVO product.
How does it clear your pullpit? Or does it fly "inside" it?
Weird, I could have sworn I posted yesterday lol

Happened to me, too, on the backstay thread.

It flies inside the bow pulpit.
A few update pics.
Couple of extra steps got done today.
Successful test fit today after the side plates got fully welded to the top plate, stem fitting also got test fitted and I couldn't resist to put my forestay on just to see it. Fingers crossed another 3 to 4 weeks till final install!
Looking forward to seeing it final installed. It is looking very good man!!
Getting closer :clap
You'll need to back the boat up another 3' or so. Will your slip rate go up?
Oh for sure, kinda hard to stand on water when doing a test fit :D
Overall length only went up by a foot believe it or not. From stem to tip of sprit is about 21".
I am liking the flush "deck" and side "skirts". That really dresses it up. Thanks for the uodate photos.
Yes, the top braces have been removed now that the side skirts are on, what's still missing is the anchor roller setup and then a plate to cap it from the bottom.
A few questions: How is it secured to the hull/deck? Are you going to have a bobstay? And, have you calculated an overall weight?
It's secured with 2 bolts on either side, 3 on the top plus the stem itself. No bobstay and at the moment no idea of weight, my guess around 50lbs
A few more pics, some of them might explain some questions.
Test fit from on the boat went well today, working out what modifications I will need to make to the pulpit.
Tht second lower pulpit tube is going to make an awesome spot to mount a dolphin watching seat ;-)
Yep, the top loop is getting removed and side rails changed a bit. There will be nothing to catch any sheets or the sail itself that way.
And slightly off topic but related, here's my new north sails 3Di Genoa. It's going to get test fit on Tuesday, I'll get pics of it hoisted on here.
Couldn't resist, weather was great so why not!
Is this one of the new sails they build on a 3D jig to get the form and then run "tape" to keep the stretch down?
Yes it is, check out the north sails video of how they're made, super cool. They keep their shape far longer and are more durable than traditional panel sawn Dacron sales. That's what I was told anyway, time will tell.
It is interesting how high the draft reducing foam strips are. It seems they are often much lower on the luff.
Logo- I assume you went with their "Ocean series"? Which material choice did you go with?
OCEAN 700 : UltraPE/Aramid Hybrid
OCEAN 370 : Polyester/UltraPE Hybrid
OCEAN 330 : 100% 3Di NORDAC Polyester
Ocean 330 Nordac, what would you guys recommend for new sheets? I'm looking at Marlow D2 club or D2 racing 78. Either in the 11mm thickness (7/16")
Pulpit being modified.
Snazzy!!! I am so looking forward to seeing how it all looks as a system.
No explanation required
Good pace this week!
Sooo COOL Antoni!!!
I can't wait to take it out on a sail with the new setup! Got a ship date from north sails for my new Helix gennaker and it's not till June 8th. So still a little while to go...
Some more progress pics.
Schnazzy! I love the level of detail.
Bottom skin template, attachment point for potential bobstay and some polishing :clap
LOVE IT!!!
So close...
Another sneak peak :clap
F*&%#$ A!!! Damn Antoni, I am so excited to see this thing installed.
Me TOO! It's so damn close that the anticipation is getting worse lol. Sandy who's the fabricator building this for me has been putting in a lot of time, super laborious/tedious/physical work to polish this thing. We recon it's gotta weight about 45lbs, awkward shape and he has to manhandle it at the buffing wheel for hours.
If all goes well I should have some pics for you guys on Monday night, we should be able to do the final fit and tack weld all the parts on the boat before we take it to the shop a final time to finish welding up everything and closing up the bottom.
So exciting. I have done a few stainless polishing projects, emphasis on small, and they were VERY labor intensive and time consuming, but I always enjoy seeing the mirror finiah gradually reveal itself.
:clap :clap :clap
Shiny!!!
Tuesday or Wednesday this week it's getting welded on the boat with the rest of the parts, then hoping this coming weekend we can do a dry fit of the completed bow sprit.
95% done!
Cant wait to see it with the new pulpit!
It's bolted on! Permanent! I'm so happy. Sandy from Metal by design knocked it out of the park, a piece of art with so much attention to detail. Couldn't be happier. Exhausted from a full weekend of work but thrilled to have this completed.
It looks SOOOO sharp Antoni!! I like how it looks like it is supposed to be that way. So often, refits don't incorporate enough design and the upgrades look out of place. Not the case here. Yours looks as it should!! Can't wait to hear how she sails on the new code zero.
