Title: outhaul car
Post by: dw on November 19, 2019, 04:40:48 PM
Hello, I have a 88 C34 I just realized the boat does not have an outhaul car on the boom.   I will be going back to the boat this weekend to see if there is a track for a car or a car that would fit in the rope grove on the boom.  I had looked at this but am 6 months new to the boat so kind of looked and moved on.   All I have a cable with hook which comes out the end of the boom.   What do other late 80's C34 have for an outhaul car?   Sorry no pictures.  Seems there should be more there or is going to be.
Thanks,
Dwight

DW,
The outhaul mechanism is inside the boom.  Not ideal but that's how it is.  The picture in this link says MkII but it was the same on my Mk 1.5 https://c34.org/bbs/index.php/topic,8764.msg66691.html#msg66691 (https://c34.org/bbs/index.php/topic,8764.msg66691.html#msg66691)

Some have increased the mechanical advantage with various in boom pulley arrangements.  A good thing to do in my mind.

You may need to take the end caps off the boom to untangle or replace the setup on your boat.  There's lots of information on this forum about that.  Good luck with your project.

I replaced mine with:     https://www.catalinadirect.com/index.cfm/product/3571/index.cfm.    Pretty happy with outcome.

I have the same one (internal) on my 1990 with upgraded 10:1 block set-up. Works fine. However, CD does offer a car modification allegedly for a C34, but I have never seen one installed on C34. Looks like Garhauer hardware  You would have to install a track as well.

I realize (Stu,) the 30 may be different but there is a groovy slug, and the outhaul and cringle attach with clevis pins. Lotsa drag involved.
Some have done otherwise- a track and car or a Velcro band to hold a loose footed sail to the boom and attach the outhaul directly to the cringle.

Dwight,
The outhaul arrangement is shown on Page 27 of the C34 MkI manual here.  http://c34.org/wiki/images/b/b1/1988-C34-Owners.pdf (http://c34.org/wiki/images/b/b1/1988-C34-Owners.pdf)
Options discussed above give better purchase.

Dwight : NO CAR on the MKI !!  Just attach the outhaul clevis to the cringle on the clue of the Mainsail !!
You might want to read thru your owners manual or the one provided on line or in the posts above.

You'll find outhaul cars only on 34's fitted with in-mast roller furling...

NO CAR!!! relax it was just a F'ing question!  Do me favor and ignore my future post. Go scream at your kids or something.

Having a car here provides some addition option to trim a sail.  A C30 has one is a bit antiquated being metal on metal slide it did hold the foot of the sail in place.  Has anyone looked at the C30 out haul car on a C34?  Yes I will be using Velcro to strap down the clew of the main but due to reefing blocks it then pretty much stuck there.  Being able to flatten or ease the main out is a nice option can improve main sail shape and boat speed.  I will be looking into other options thanks

Dwight

Some have used a Delrin Super Slug in place of the OEM slide and have reported great success...
