Title: Ultrasonic Sensor
Post by: crieders on February 15, 2019, 08:35:41 AM
anyone replace our old Airmar paddle wheel sensors with new ultrasonic ones? what happens when they get dirty? Same issues? Will they work with older Raymarine products?

I have a number of the earlier ones out there and all but one has failed. When they work, and are calibrated, they are great, but I can't speak to long term reliability of the current generation. The early models were definitely not entirely reliable..

I haven't looked recently, but in the past when I checked out the prices, they were very expensive.

As a Certified Airmar installer, I might be able to answer your question.  In general there are two ways to get the data from the sensor. One is way is nmea 0183 and the other is nmea 2000 depending on the model of US sensor and depending on chart plotter/instruments. If you can tell me your setup, I am happy to answer your questions.
