All : When working on a winch - use the bottom of a soda/water bottle case.  Cut a hole the size of thewinch dimeter and slide it over the winch!!

The problem I see with that very taught umbrella material is when something does fall into it, the umbrella acts like a trampoline and you'll see your tool bounce up and plop into the water!!  I would put a towel as a lining to catch what falls in.
