After several months of work in between sailing excursions, we are ready to launch a newly redesigned C34.org website. The new site will be made live this evening so check back tomorrow to see how it looks. During this time, the forum should work fine but the main site c34.org may be unavailable during the implementation.
This effort is based on feedback from many of you and work done by myself and a committee including Rick Allen, Stu Jackson, Dave Sanner and some help from Jack Hutteball. Our goal was primarily to bring the site into some updated technology and make it easier to use and update including better visibility on mobile devices.
We will provide more info highlighting some of the changes after the launch.
:clap
Thank you for all of your work!
Thanks much, Sue!
I logged in and was so pleasantly surprised! Beautiful job! :thumb:
The new websiteI wanted to point out a few
highlights and next steps for the new website.
- New Design - of course we had to make it look more modern but it is also easier to read on mobile devices
- Quick access to our most used features including the forum, tech notes and the tech wiki
- Easier to manage fleet sections including news about each fleet
- More appropriate places to put organizational news rather than on the forum - stuff that needs to stay around
- Better search - the entire site including the forum should now be able to be searched right from the top of every page with a built in Google search (full indexing may take a little time)
- A new member database - Our old member databases were out of date so we decided to create a new one that members can manage themselves. go to http://c34.org/owner-database/ (http://c34.org/owner-database/) and put in your own information.
- An updated view of our Flickr site - http://c34.org/photo-gallery/ (http://c34.org/photo-gallery/) share your pictures with the group.
- Easy content updates - Anyone that can use a word processor and is authorized can update the content on the site - no special technical or html skills are required.
Coming soonAn updated view of the tech notes/Mainsheet articles that is easier to manage and a master index that is easier to use
Again thanks to the committee for their experience and feedback throughout this process.
I recommend that you all click on the upper left C34 Home link. The new look is fantastic, shows the important material and includes the important Google search button right there.
All thanks is due to Sue who did all the work.
I'm still getting the old 2001 home page. Is there anything I need to do but click on the C34 Home?
Jim
You may have the page cached. Try to reload it in your browser.
Looking Good - REALLY GOOD!
Great job.
Is the Forum template changing too?
http://c34.org/index.html (http://c34.org/index.html) needs to be updated too.
Paul
Thanks,
Very user friendly.
Paul
Thanks, we have taken care of the index.html page
How come I see no difference?
Reload the page. Your browser is caching it.
I've tried that with no success. Looks great on my phone.
Try checking out this link for methods to clear your cache in various browsers.

Ok, I get the new homepage... But the other pages (main message board for example) look the same. Is that correct?
Yes the message board and the tech notes still look the same though I am working on getting the tech notes into the new look now.
I like the look of the new homepage, pics are good!!
Thanks for effort.
Very nice!
I like it. :thumb:
I encourage members who just use the great message board to look over the rest of the website. I'm laid up due to shoulder surgery and spent some time in the photo section. Great to see other C34s doing there thing in other places.
Jim
I don't know if this is unusual but I just noticed
britinusa, sselinger, Jeff Kaplan and 72 Guests are viewing this board.
Paul
72 guest = Cyber-goblins gathering data.
Ukranian hackers stealing our valuable secrets... :?
I send a lot of skippers here with links on other forums.

:thumb: Thank You Sue for a fantastic looking website. I love it!
BTW, on the topic of numbers of active "guests". You don't need to log into the forum to browse, just to post. And for those of us that never shut off our computers, it just keeps you as active even if you aren't actively on the site until you shut your browser or logoff or shut down your computer. So basically that number is not that meaningful.
Looks great!!! :clap
Good work, Sue, thanks!
Sue,
I notice that linking into the TechWiki, now displays a simplified UI, with no "Edit" link or capability.
Was that intentional?
To be able to add to/edit the TW, I had to get in thru a back door.
Ken
At the bottom of every page ther is a link to the original article on the wiki where you can edit the source. I think I can put an edit link on the bottom as well if folks want that?
Sue,
just noticed this.
In Chrome the footer that contains the copyright info has a link on the right to the disclaimer, but only the D shows inside the footer blue block.

Paul
Paul, can you possibly post a screen capture of what you are seeing? I'm in chrome and it looks OK to me. Also are you on a Windows machine or a Mac?
Thanks

Paul do you possibly have a zoom value set in Chrome or a Custom DPI set in your Screen Resolution settings?
I'm using Chrome v. 54.0.2840.99 m, and the entire footer shows up (unless I zoom chrome out to about 60%.)

Sue,
Ahhhhh Ha. d'oh. The link got lost on the wiki manuals page -- didn't even notice it
http://c34.org/wikiwp/?rdp_we_resource=http%3A%2F%2Fc34.org%2Fwiki%2Findex.php%3Ftitle%3DManuals
Possibly rename "source" to "Edit this page"? Or under Home Page > Technical > Tech Wiki, add a link "Add to or Edit the TechWiki" that points to http://c34.org/wiki/index.php?title=Catalina_
Also,
I believe that I have copied everything on the C34.org "manuals" page, over to the Wiki Manuals page (I will verify that) so that the old location with manuals could be vaporized to avoid confusion between the two. The Home Page link under "Technical" could then point to the Wiki manuals.
Maybe Paul's seeing only the "D" isclaimer is because the link is at a fixed width?
-ken
Ken,
I took a few of your suggestions with a little modification.
- Renamed "Source" to "Edit this page at the source:"
Since 99% of the time folks are just reading the wiki content, I don't really want to put a menu item to go directly to the wiki source. I think this approach with just relabeling the link will be better
- Changed the link under Documents - Manuals now goes directly to the wiki page with the manuals. It did look like you had put everything there from the old manuals page.
We had some discussion on this and I actually would prefer if we put all the manuals on a Wordpress page rather than in the wiki and appoint someone to own the manuals section. The editing of these pages is easier in my opinion than the wiki pages is though the limitation is that not everyone can edit directly. For now, the wiki page works. We are trying to boost direct ownership of certain areas of the site to try to keep them more up to date.
Haven't heard back from Paul on what he is really seeing with the disclaimer link but possibly a fixed width issue (more likely your zooming idea is what is happening.) I did have to hack that footer a bit so I suspect something like that.
Sue,
Perfect!
Ok, I'll continue to post-to/edit the Wiki manuals until that changes.
Note/caution -- I see that I had simply copy/pasted many of the links from C34/manuals, to the Wiki page, not actually reposted the documents. I wouild think it best to actually put all of them at wiki/images so its consistent --- yes? no?
Great job on the site.
Ken
Ken Yes you should repost the actual manual to wherever they are on the wiki.
Hi Sue,
here's a link to the screen shot.
100% zoom.

Paul
Is that in a laptop screen or monitor?
Do you possibly have a custom screen resolution set (ie desktop > right click.)
Below is on Win 7 Pro 7601, Chrome, 100% zoom.
The second is zoomed out (fixed width bottom banner.)
kk
I adjusted how this disclaimer is displayed as I do think it is related to zooming. See how it looks now.
Sue
Looks good on my laptop.
Will check the PC as soon as Peggy finishes her workout :)
