Title: Installing LED in cabin fixtures
Post by: mregan on March 11, 2014, 09:11:22 AM
I want to keep the existing rectangular cabin light fixtures and replace the bulbs with LED.  I pulled a bulb & took a picture.  I can't seem to find any LED bulbs that have the same end?  Only ones I see have 2 metal pins extending from the LED.  Would these be correct?

IIRC, www.marinebeam.com has a good primer on replacement bulbs.

I've seen this style but wasn't sure if they are the correct replacement type.

It looks like the pins on your halogen bulb have broken off but perhaps they just aren't visible in the picture. You can find replacement LED bulbs with a variety of pin styles and sizes at places like SuperBright LEDs: http://www.superbrightleds.com/cat/boat-rv/

I think that the pins are folder around the end tip of the bulb.

One thing to do prior shopping, take measurement of distance between the pins and lengths, some web site do have so you can check if will work or if proper bulb

mre : The bulb that you are pictured holding has the same base as a #194 instrument light bulb that goes in most auto's.
Look at my Mainsheet tech note article on LEDs that I changed for the engine instrument lights that have the same base.

Can't tell you base nomenclature?

The rectangular, sliding lighting fixtures in the salon of our 1989 C34 took festoon bulbs (pointed on both ends) and were 42 MM in length:

For what it is worth, I really like the Marinebeam lights.

How is the light output on those festoon LED's compared to the OEM bulbs?  I want to get all converted to LED this year, but would like more light than my sliders put out.

mre : Again, look at my Mainsheet Tech Note article on the LED's I changed in the Engine Instrument Panel gages.
Those LEDs I replace in the engine panel gages have the same base as your picture!!  The LED's I used were red, but they also had white!!

Steve, the LED bulbs put out more light than the incandescent bulbs they replaced at a fraction of the energy usage.  Highly recommended if you can stomach the cost.  The good news is that you shouldn't ever have to replace them or at least not for a long, long time.

Ron thanks.  Finally figured out how to use the Tech Wiki and found the article & the bulbs.  Thanks for the help.

After years of making my own, they now sell them, and they are on clearance!

I just ordered 8 of them.

Hi

There is a guy who ordered these from Ebay for the square fixture in is C25.  Same as mine on our C34 1989.
They have different adapter, and was happy with it.

Just get the Warm White.

I replaced my same cabin fixture lightbulbs with replacements from marinebeam LED's. They have been working very well for two seasons now. My boat is also a 1986 #212.
