Title: Furling Mast for C42
Post by: mark_53 on March 02, 2014, 10:40:46 AM
I can pick up a furling mast for a c42 for a couple thousand bucks.  Does anyone know if this would work on an 89 C34?

Thanks

IIRC, the C42 is a double spreader swept back rig.  And taller than even a C34 tall rig.

As Stu said, it is a totally different rig and about 6" taller than the C34 Tall Rig. It is also a lot more sail area than even the tall rig. Why, other than you think it is a good deal, would you want a rig different than what Catalina designed for the boat?

I bet if you threw money and hacksaw blades at this you could make it work.

I think that the "couple of thousand bucks" for the mast would only be the start of the spending.  If you really want to pursue it make up a detailed work list.  new mainsail, furling line and outhaul routed to the cockpit, modifying the boom, and a lot more   and     Think about resale.  Many buyers don't like big modifications.
I like my furling main.  I think it can be done.  but   My 2 cents is if you want a furling main trade your boat  for one that was made with one.
