Title: Is there a consensus on which engine mount to use?
Post by: KWKloeber on January 27, 2014, 04:49:31 PM
Looking over posts, there seems to controversy whether the K50 mounts are too soft to use on the M-25XP.

Is there a consensus on which to use, or any owner recommendations / horror stories?
Likewise, experience with another mount?

Note also that the hard connection to the muffler will be removed -- with a new exhaust riser and soft connection to a new muffler as well.

Thanks,
Ken K

Ken K : You definitely do not have a 1984 C34!!  C34s First produced in 1986!!

If you follow the later posts we have agreed that you can use the K50s on the front and the K75s in the rear or the K75s all the way around.

I'm surprised that you have any teeth left in your mouth, if you still have the original mounts that came with the M25XP engine!!!!

My thought

Ron,  Noted your comment on the "old" engine mounts.  Will new mounts make that much difference in vibration?  If so, I just found my next project.

I used the K75's front and rear with good results.  I was able to install them without jacking the engine up,  replacing them one at a time, by removing the threaded pin from each new one, sliding it into postion and then screwing the pin into the base from the top.
I used a sawzall to remove the old ones. This procedure is documented in an earlier post.

Mike : If you go to new mounts the difference is so spectacular that you'll think you have a different  engine!!
I kid you not -  it is that kind of a change!!  No buzz in your feet after a long motor!  I've even had experienced marina people ask me "aren't you going to start your engine before we cast off the lines?" - the engine was already running!!

I've replaced my mounts both ways lifting the engine and taking the mount apart like Roland mentions. It is easier and faster to take the mounts apart, but you'll need a reciprocating saw.  The saw is well worth the price and ease of doing the job.

A few thoughts

I tackled this project 2 years ago.
I can't go along with Ron Hills' enthusiasm though..
I think the K75's are too soft.
The post on this involving my boat is lengthy. I had issues.
I hope you can find it if you haven't seen it already.
I will say this: you will feel like you were hit by a truck after completing
The mount swap, adjustments, shaft alignment, all pretty much
with one hand cuz you won't be able to get two in there.
We're all here for you!

Charlie : The company that makes the K75 and K50 engine mounts is Vetus.

I put K50's on mine all around and was very happy with them. I thimk it would be tough to find someone who has tried both but you can pretty much bank on Ron's advice.

Ron,  Did you use the K75's all the way around or a combination of the K50's and K75's on the front and rear?

Thanks,
Mike

Mike, have you read the link on the other current mount topic?

Mike : To answer your question, I left the K50s on the front and replaced the K50s in the rear with K75s.

I found that both worked OK, but you got a slight tapping of the drive shaft against the thru hull tube in the hull at engine idle.  The slightly stiffer K75's took care of that problem.

What about a flexible shaft coupling after putting in the more flexible motor mounts; is that thought to be a necessity or can that current coupling stay in place after alignment?

Dave : I've had a flexible coupling sense right after I got the boat in 1989.  I don't believe that was my problem as I only got the "ticking" at engine idle.

Other people followed my initial advice (of all K50s) and found they had the same problem!  The changing the rear mounts to the slightly stiffer K75s eliminated that problem.
