Title: Bilge Pump tubing
Post by: mregan on June 20, 2013, 02:41:03 PM
Anyone know what size the corrugated bilge pump tubing is.  Looks like 1" but I forgot to measure before I left the boat.

I have to replace mine as well but the original has already been removed.  Does anyone know the length needed and the typical path to get to the bilge?

In my 1990 my bilge hoses run to a space between the engine stringers and the water lift muffler, then one goes straight back to the thru hulls in the stern the other to the Whale Gulper in the aft lazzarette.  It's not over 25 feet. Everything is on the port side.

A quick review of the West Marine catalog shows that most heftier electric bilge pumps have a 1 1/8" outlet, and the Whale bulkhead manual pumps are made for 1" and 1 1/2".  Check the catalogs.

The hose comes in different sizes:  http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=19376&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&storeId=11151&storeNum=50632&subdeptNum=50650&classNum=50651#.UcRYKZzfL_I

I checked yesterday.  The Rule 1500 uses 1 1/8" ID tubing.  In stock at WM.

Hi
Talking about bilge pump.  Does anyone have tried making a loop under the kitchen cabinet, to go higher than the thruhull.
So, to have a higher point than the thruhull for water to not drain back in the bilge.
I added a check valve after the bilge pump, but the remaining water in the corrugated hose drip back into the bilge with time.
Or am I the only one having this issue ??    :?

No, you're not the only one Patrice. I've had my batteries drained a few times by the bilge pump cycling back and forth the same hose full of water. Stu responded to a post of mine a while back and suggested raising the float switch in bilge floor. I think he suggested 3/8's or 1/2 inch. I haven't tried that, but one of these days I will. Meanwhile, I just get out to the boat sooner rather than later after a big rain.
Your idea of a loop under the sink sounds interesting. Look forward to hearing the verdict!

Correct me if i'm wrong but I think it would have to be a vented loop otherwise the water would still siphon back to the bilge.

On the Rule pump manual it says don't install a check valve.  I also find it annoying when the pump shuts off you get a flood of water back but the pump doesn't suck the bilge dry anyway.  I bought a 1 gallon wet/dry vac.  Use it to suck the remaining water out of the bilge.

Yes, installed a hose loop that runs up to counter top height behind the inboard sink where a vented loop is located.  Installed way back in 88.
No problems so far.

Aldo,
Did you have to boost your bilge pump to a bigger unit to handle the increased height?

thanks,
Ed

My baby came from the factory without an electric bilge pump so the entire install including the pump was new.
I used a rather expensive self priming pump mounted out and above the bilge water.

I hate those ridiculous immersed units that give up just because of a few dog hairs.

Do you have a manu. or model number.  I'd be interested in looking at a different pump than the standard Rule.

This is somewhat similar to the old single diaphragm pump that I have.

http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=15449&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&storeId=11151&storeNum=50632&subdeptNum=50653&classNum=50658

I cannot seem to find the one I installed back then, possibly/probably no longer made. will double check when I get down to the boat next week and can see the make/model number.

Edit: looked again and this pump 1 1/2" is larger than the 1" that I have?

Sorry for the rambling .....

Found this pump which also looks appropriate but smaller at 3/4".

http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=29594&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&storeId=11151&storeNum=50632&subdeptNum=50661&classNum=50662

I would look at it in person to better evaluate it?

Ah, not your basic bilge pump. So you mounted it out of the bilge and, I assume, wired in a float switch in the bilge?
