Title: pin holes in main sail
Post by: crieders on November 24, 2010, 06:37:39 PM
Noticed many pin holes in main, not very old, perhaps 5-7 seasons. Well maintained sail, kept in loft over the winters etc. Any thoughts on this?

Is this bright sunshine illuminating pinholes, or do you actually see holes in your sail cloth when you look at it up close?

I've seen new sail cloth with "pinholes" in bright sunshine - not a big problem.

Is the cloth still stiff and holding its shape?  Does the sail look good?  How is the stitching?   Are the fibers abraided and broken.   If it is a good looking sail, I wouldn't worry about pinholes, you won't have much air escape throught them.  Unlikely to affect performance.  Now if it's all baggy and blown out, that's a different issue...

Cliff : Do didn't mention if these pin holes had a pattern or not.
If they are in a line or staggered, they might just be needle holes where the sail maker ran out of bobbin thread ?   A thought
