Title: Sink Drain Project Advice
Post by: Lance Jones on March 27, 2009, 06:04:36 AM
I have all the major parts to redo the sink drain system as is mentioned in the project section. Also, with my gnu access panel I installed, this project should be easier due to the increased access. Now my question..... As I mentioned a long time ago, the nipple coming off my through hull does a 90 degree bend. My first task is to replace this with a straight nipple (OK Stop the visualization!). Once I get it out, what is the preferred type material to replace it with? I've seen PVC, Brass and any number of types at Home Depot and West Marine. Look forward to getting this done and having a speedy drain!

Thanks Steve. Any particular reason? (Just asking)

Lance,
I am sure a PVC one would have worked too, I just wanted something a little stronger below the waterline.

Lance you only have 2 choices below the waterline and plastic is not one of 'em.  Use either Marelon (which is what the thru hulls are made of) or bronze.  I would NOT use brass on a boat, ever!  The reason is galvanic corrosion which eats brass up right away - some research on different metal materials is recommended if you haven't done so already.

As always, Stu is right and it was bronze I used and not brass.  I am not sure they even make that big of a brass nipple.  I do remember it cost about 12 to 15 bucks.
