Title: Factory companionway board finish
Post by: Jeff_McKinney on May 21, 2006, 12:21:24 PM
Does anyone know what the factory puts on the companionway hatch boards and what type of wood they are made from. It looks like teak, but the grain seems wrong. I'm thinking about 3-4 coats of CETOL Light, but since the prep is different for non-cetol treated wood would appreciate some info. I looked in archives, but could not find an answer. Plenty on RE-finishing, but nothing on this aspect.

Thanks

Jeff : Why don't you call the factory and ask them?
I believe that they use a water based polyurethane, but don't know the type of wood on the MKII's.   :think

Ron,

Per your advice I called Catalina. The boards for teh MK IIs are in fact teak, and they still use the water-based varnish. They also said that CETOL Light was fine, but there were plenty of other options that would be OK Ultra-fine bronze wool, sea water, baking soda & elbow grease will clean it off nicely before doing any refinishing work.   :thumb:

One interesting thing: They are apparently no longer making replacements, so we will need to take care of them or find other resources.  :cry4`
