with the new alternator bracket, the hastings filter I purchased is too close to the adjuster bracket than I would like. Are there shorter filters available? This one is 3 3/8 inches. I'm sure there has to be one that's a little shorter. Thanks in advance, BD 8)

Most of the following filters can be found in automotive stores, or in the case of Kubota, at tractor or lawn stores (look in the yellow pages).

There are a few other items to consider besides cost: Size -- if you have installed a high output alternator, the filter length might dictate that a shorter filter be used regardless of brand. It's imperative that some space be maintained between the head of the filter and the alternator adjusting arm. The shortest filter I've found is the KUBOTA. Other short filters ar~ NAPA 1356, BOSH 72182, FRAM PH6607. However, these are also smaller in diameter meaning there is less filter element.
Clogged filter by pass -- most (but NOT all) filters have a by-pass if the filter becomes clogged. The old saying, "Dirty oil is better than no oil at all" is very true. This by-pass can usually be detected by seeing a spring on the inside of the filter which opens when the differential pressure reaches 11-14 pounds. You might also look at the filter and see a black rubber diaphragm under the small inlet holes. This is an anti drain back valve that keeps the oil from draining out of the filter when the engine is off( or when removing the filter) .

Although there are a whole list of interchangeable fuel filters, these are the only two that I've found in stock. Most of the automotive stores are willing to order you a case if you are really interested. The special order price is usually higher. The RACOR fuel filter (which is first in line from the fuel tank) filters down to 2 microns. The filter mounted on the engine are 10 micron (much larger). I change my RACOR faithfully every 6 months and the engine mounted filter every 3 or 4 years.
DRIVE BELT REPLACEMENTS: GATES 7/16" 7400 OR PREMIUM XL 25-10153. (These are larger than the original 3/8" belt.)

You reference KUBOTA 70000-15241 as the appropriate oil filter and
KUBOTA 7000-43081 as the fuel filter of choice. But when I got my boat (M35B) the oil filter was KUBOTA 7000-32050 and the fuel filter was 7000-43080. The Westerbeke dealer insists that his numbers were good when I went for replacements. So folks may want to know that these seem to work as well.

I actually found that the Pureolator filter is shorter than the Kubota (same diameter), but are cheaper. I just bought 6 on sale @ $1.95 each!! Watch the sales!! Ron

Please note, however, that the filter equivalents were noted for M25 and M25XP engines. With your newer boat, as you noted, you have a newer M35B engine, which could very well take different filters.
Since that appears to be the case, now that you know the filter equivalents for the newer engines, please send them on to Mark Elkin, associate webmaster for Projects and FAQs, and have the filter equivalents Projects page updated. Thanks.
Unfortunately with filters you don't know what works for you until it doesn't. And that is often a little late.
I think sorting out the right filters, belts and equivalents for the M35B would be a great idea. I have made a start by noting the filters I use, but before we accept the views of my local dealer as gospel I think it would be good to hear from other M35B users. Unfortunately, the Universal parts list doesn't help much because it provides only an Universal # for the filters etc.
So if other folks with M35s would post the names and numbers of filters and belts they use, we can let empiricism triumph.
John : Filters are NOT rocket science!
The key is that the rubber gasket on the filter rides on the flat machined surface on the engine block - so a seal is formed. As I mentioned you should look for the clogged filter by pass and the anti back flow gasket.
I've noted that Kubota now only supplies the larger diameter filters ( larger dia. than the older filters for the M25/M25XP engines). The key is that that larger (in dia.) filter gasket does seal on that machined surface - even for the M25 series.
If an M35(AorB) owner buys the Purolator filter I mentioned, I think you'll find it will fit and is "one hell of a lot cheaper" than the stock filter from Universal/Westerbeake. :wink:
