I just discovered that my 1988 c34, purchased last year through a yacht broker, is a standard rig. It was represented by the owner and broker as a tall rig. Does anyone know, all else equal, what the difference in msrp price was in 1988. If I can ascertain this, I might get an idea as to what the difference may be on the used market 16 years later. This may all be for naught as I'm sure the PO will blame the broker and the broker will say that they received their info from the owner.
Anyway, it may be one more thing to pursue during the winter.

Ken : I looked at a price sheet dated 9 April 1988. The line "F36 01 Tall Rig in Lieu of Standard.......$325".
But this dealer added "incl" - so it was NO additional cost!!!!!!!

I checked as Stu has suggested. There is a price difference. Not only the Rig$$$. But also other things. ie. Sails, both main and Genoa. May be it is just an honest mistake but then again........
I would go after the broker. What is right is right. If the broker is not professional enough to know the difference, and the importance of the difference. Maybe a lighter wallet might serve to enlighten him.
Can you imagine the favorable comments he might receive from you towards others in the sailing community. Can he imagine the negative comments if he did less than due. He couldn't buy the good will you offer. This is what gives Boat Brokers of all stripes a less than favorable reputation.

Ken : The real cost was in the sails!! If you had read my post on "how to tell if your boat is a tall or standard rig - your mast will tell you" you wouldn't have been fooled.

thanks for all for the comments. In the interim I called Catalina and had them check by referencing the hull id#. They got right back to me and told me that the boat was shipped in 1988 as a tall rig. Clearly the luff measurement on the original main( sailing with a new main) is that of a standard rig. I also measured the mast distance from top to deck (imperfectly- as the mast is up for the winter) and got a measurement closer to that of a standard rig. My research will continue with a precise mast measurement being the acid test. I haven't talked to the PO or dealer yet. I do completely agree that this is nothing to obsess over. We have thoroughly enjoyed the boat for two seasons including a month long cruise this last summer. Nevertheless maybe the dealer will comp some needed service if the issue is presented in a fair way.
