I've searched this site (Stu please don't yell at me) for the posting about someone talking about the 3M tech saying that thier caulk isn't really formulated for sticking to stainless steel and the name and phone number of the type of caulk the 3M person suggested. Does anyone remember that posting?? It wasn't too long ago.

You could try LifeCaulk or one of the other polysulphides formulated for bedding fittings.
The posting was talking about the 3M Tech saying their caulk wasn't really formulated for stainless steel and gave the name of the caulk that was better than what they sell!! I'm just trying to find that post because I want to try that caulk.
Stu, maybe you could try searching for it, you always seem to find things. I've tried every word I can think of that I thought was in that post.
If anyone can help, I would appreciate it.

Just got back from an overnight and race today, will try searching (again) tomorrow (Sunday).
I also think a basic look at West Marine's Advisors on caulks would help, because if we, together can't find it here, then we may just as well start from scratch.

Clarification....in the posting I'm looking for, the person wrote that he called 3M and the 3M tech fellow gave him the name and number of a COMPETITOR'S caulk and said that caulk was better formulated to stick to stainless steel and that 3M caulk really is not as good on ss as that. So, it's not the 3M caulk that I'm looking for, it's the information on the competitor caulk that 3M themselves actually suggested.
If anyone remembers this and finds it, I greatly appreciate it. I've search every word I can think of....

ROC..... What are you going to use the caulk on? I've been using 3M 4200 for years on my chain plates and stantions and never had them leak again.
I want to use them on my chain plates. The posting I'm trying to find is from someone on this site that talked to 3M and was actually told by 3M that their caulk was made to stick to fiberglass and not really that good to stainless. The tech advisor actually told him about a better caulk!! So, I'm trying to find that post so I can find out more about that better caulk....

I finally found the information. I was wrong thinking it was from this site...sorry...but with all the boating stuff I see on this site, I thought I saw it here. It was from an article from Practical Sailor, March 2004. It is about chainplate rebedding and the writer says the 3M tech advisor suggested a better caulk for fiberglass to stainless steel adhesion. It's called Silaprene. In the July issue of Mailport, a follow up letter states that the only dealer that sells this caulk is CP Industries, 740-763-2886. The product number is M6324. It's interesting that a tech advisor would point a customer to a competitive product. It might be worth looking at..... ;)
