Title: Adding opening port to fixed port lens in head
Post by: Set2sea on August 22, 2022, 08:50:53 AM
I would like to add an opening port to fixed port lens in head. I have seen this done, anybody out there done this and know what opening port to go with?

The ones catalina used were beckson black units.  Personally, I cant suggest these for that loacation due to their bulk.  The spot it would go is right at the side deck and likely to be a bit of an ankle catcher.  The lewmar ports are a bit smoother to the cabin side, but they dont come in black.

The older boats had opening ports in the fixed portlight in the head.  My opening port is made by Gray.  I got replacement gaskets for it on sailboatowners.com.

Paul : Yes, there was a post on this message board of someone that had installed an opening port in the side fixed (plexiglass) port in the C34 head.
Sorry, right off I don't recall if it was a Beckson or a Lewmar opening port??

Hi Paul. When I replaced my fixed portlights in 2019, I installed a "Beckson Newport Self-drain Rectangular Opening Port" part number PO410-BS-10 in the head.

To reduce chance of banging it, and to help with water drainage I trimmed the bottom of the frame. If you zoom up the photo, you can see what I'm talking about. I attached the Beckson with SST T-nuts and DOW sealant.

FYI - there is also a "Beckson Newport Rain-drain Rectangular Opening Port" part number PO410-DBS-20. YBYC.
